If you want to buy special AMEX tickets, such as the ones offered if you have a Gold card, you do need a code. It's the 800 phone number on the back of your card.

Yup. That is the only time...the special seating. For general Amex tickets you just have to pay with your card. I just bought tickets for the Kenny Chesney concert and this is how it was handled. If you wanted the "special reserved" gold card seats you needed the 800 customer service number of the back of your card. If you just wanted seats as part of the presale you just had to pay with your Amex.
