Americans only

Sorry to invade an "American's only" thread ( ;) )but I just love hearing different accents :sunny:

The only ones that annoy me are fake accents, like Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones' Diary, just terrible :confused3. That said I love Dick Van ****'s "cockney" accent in Mary Poppins...too funny :rotfl:

"God save the Queen--Y'ALL!"
:lmao: :teeth:

How does the OP cope when she goes abroad or out of state? I enjoy hearing different accents and trying to decide their origin. Only thing that grates with me is the very obviously fake accent when an actor is trying to portray someone of a different nationality to his/her own and is making an absolute hash of it.

Just think how the Europeans, Canadians, Kiwis, and Aussies must feel when watching American movies and TV programs and listening to our wide variety of accents.

English here in Canada has many different accents as well. And here in Québec, with only 7million people , you can say witch part of the provine people are from from their accent in French ! Americans who learn proper french from France sometimes are surprise when they here us speak french because it is so different from french from france !

I once met a guy in New-York who learned his french in the south of France where they have a ver peculiar accent. So he spoke french with an american and a south of France accent ! One of the weirdest thing I've ever heard !

Both of my kids were in French immersion for their entire primary and secondary education. With each new year, you would get a different french teacher with a different background and dialect. It was great since it really exposed the kids to what they might encounter.

We are from the Toronto area. When we were in California last year, a waitress commented to us that we didn't sound like Canadians. I wonder what accent Californians expect Canadians to have? It was kind of funny. I thought most of the Californians sounded pretty much like the people in Toronto.

I read someplace that many times they look for people from the midwest to be news readers and tv hosts, because we have such flat, boring voices that everyone understand!

I'd love to know what the people who love 'British accents' actually think a British accent is? :confused3 I've lost count of the amount of times that I've been asked in the US whether I'm Australian! There seems to be an assumption that if we don't all talk like Hugh Grant then we can't be from the UK! :rotfl2:

For such a small country we have a very diverse range of dialects/accents. For example......I live in what is known as the Midlands but our accents are very different to those in other parts of the Midlands - even from a city 12 miles up the road. If you listen to someone from Manchester and someone from Liverpool (cities which are about 35/40 miles apart) they sound VERY different. ;)

It irritates me to watch a movie where the actors have 'fake' accents and over do it. :sad2: Especially a southern accent.

ITA!!!! There are southern actors and actresses out there... give them the southern role.... not some yankee....(not to cause any problems).....just as a southern cant fake a northern accent... a northern cant fake a southern.

When we visit the U.S., I have to give it a bit of the Queens English as some people struggle to understand my regional accent, it's easier than having to repeat myself two or three times. Dus tha no, o'er yon shop, thi can't cope wi a bit o' lanky twang. See what I mean.

You should hear my DD's, especially my8 year old, trying to communicate with their grandparents, who live in CA! :rotfl2:

It's funny because we moved here from CA when my oldest DD was 2 and my youngest DD was born here, yet a lot of people ask if they are American! I guess that they must just pick up on my DH's accent :confused3

I have lived my whole life in MA. My sister frequently goes to NYC on business. She was conducting a meeting there and she told the staff that she loved their accents. They cracked up and informed my sister that it was she who had the accent not them. :rotfl2:

I love all accents. Especially ones on a tall dark handsome guy. Even better if he's rich. :lmao: Movies and shows don't bother me. Everyone has an accent.
