Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

He recorded a video of himself in front of Parliament. Framed in such a way that it didn't look like a big deal. But no wide shots.

The protesters are not on Parliament Hill proper, there is no vehicle access to the grounds. They are on the streets around the Hill.
The Ottawa Chief of Police has requested the addition of 1800 more police officers to be brought in from across the country to get things resolved.
The area of the occupation is not at all expansive., it isn’t a numbers thing - it’s a disruption thing. A court injunction was granted yesterday to curb the 21 hour a day constant honking of vehicle horns.

I don’t want the thread shut down. Please be mindful on news stories posted.

And referred to here as "Canadian" cheese because they're made here with Canadian milk as are all our dairy products, excepting a few specialty import items.
Maybe it should be called North American cheese. We have organic varieties too.

It was a common tongue-in-cheek comment that has been said for years. I’m sorry if American humor comes across the wrong way sometimes. I lot of your citizens are obsessed with American tv shows/movies. That is where the joke comes from. I’m sorry America has a bigger impact on the world than Canada. I personally think Canada is a great and beautiful country. The joke also comes from the fact that many of your citizens are descended from American loyalists after the Revolution. That’s part of where the 51st state reference comes from. This thread is supposed to be fun, informative, and an exchange of knowledge. Sometimes I think you take some comments as an offense to your national pride when that was no one’s intent. Just an observation. :confused3

I really don’t. I roll my eyes, comment if I feel like it, then move on and really don’t give it a second thought.

The no-brainer answer is Hawaiian; it's as much a staple of Canadian cuisine as poutine or Nanaimo bars.

Created in Chatham, Ontario! I made sure to pick up a Hawaiian pizza from the original pizza joint that created it when I was in the tiny town last year. Yum!

Hawaiian is absolute favourite pizza. So glad Pizza Hut has taken it around the world :)

In my small city in Ontario, I’ve noticed it’s a general crowd pleaser. I usually make sure we order 2-3 types of pizza when ordering for groups and in general, people gravitate towards the Hawaiian. So nowadays I make sure I order 50% Hawaiian and then a quarter something else (usually some form of meat lovers) and a quarter vegetarian. I used to order a more equal split but then we always ran out of Hawaiian.

This has been in the case in multiple different group settings. Works for me - as long as there is plenty of my favourite kind that I can have as many as I want, I’m happy lol.

Absolutely a staple! Our order, no matter where we get it, always includes at least 1 Hawaiian. It's just not pizza night without it. :goodvibes

I have no idea of the origin of the name. Sort of like Tri Tip, a name that isn't use everywhere. Or pork steak.
I can't argue over "official" measurement systems, but we BOTH know from a "practical" standpoint that Canadian grocery stores still use pounds nearly 50 years (that being two generations) after officially going metric.. Here is this week's Safeway flyer. Pounds in bold type, metric in the fine print. https://www.safeway.ca/flyer/

So just because you found that flyer you think all grocery do the same. It gets real tiring listening you tell us how things are in Canada.

The vast majority of our citizens are not descendants of Loyalists. Yes there were loyalist that came here after the Revolutions but they certainly didn't settle Canada.

Well, it has been 2 years since I was in Canada, but the grocery stores I was in then still did that. You pick a flyer from your store and see what it says.

No it was invented in Ontario, that is not eastern Canada.
LOL. Chatham is 1,500 km from the Eastern most portion of Canada, and 4,000 km from the Western most of Canada. That's Eastern to me.

I said many not majority. When your country was founded post 1783, it was true and will be true for the majority in your country in 100 years or so when bloodlines in your country are further mixed.

The driving distance from Chatham, Ontario to the easternmost point in Canada is about 3400 Kms, that's far from the east coast.

We always order at least one hawaiian pizza on pizza nights.. but it’s not a “regular” hawaiian, it does have ham, pineapple and mozzarella but also bacon and smoked provolone with a house made marinara sauce. Yum!
When I have the traditional hawaiian pizza now I find it bland by comparison.

Canada is only 5,500 km from the western to eastern most portions, You math doesn't work.

I said driving distance, coast to coast would be over 8500 Kms driving. Look at a map and tell me if Chatham, Ontario is in eastern, western or central Canada.

The population of Canada was very small prior to the welcome of the loyalists.

The vast majority of the Canadian population traces their ancestors to immigrants from the British Isles not the Loyalists. Yes there were many loyalists that came to Canada but there were many, many more people that came from Europe.
