I'm in the iPhone on tour club as well.
I think the cheapest way to get some data with a us provider is the AT&T Go Phone Pay as You Go packages - take one of the PAYG call plans out (I think there are 3 with different rates and call charges) and add on a data feature pack - steep at $19.99 for 100MB but enough for the bare minimum, supplemented by WiFi.
Has anyone a cheaper way to go for some data? - or experience that confirms this plan actually works with iPhone please could you post.
These sim cards are on ebay for a few pounds - with no credit! They appear to be able to be activated here before you go via AT&T website and data added before you go.

I am going to go with t mobile, it's $50 for a month unlimited. We intend to use it in our MIFI then we can both have access with our Iphones/Ipads. This is a cheap alternative for us as Disney charge $10 for data
