First of all, I'm so sorry to ruin any surprise - I had no idea about waiting to see the show. I'm sorry, UKDeb and anyone else
Alan, as long as you asked, I'll try to answer your question.
I have to admit, I never watched the show the first year and didn't even get into it till about 3/4 through the second year and that was only because one of the contenders was the son of a friend. (Clay Aiken) Then I got addicted
First Year winners: Kelly and Justin (runner up). Kelly is pretty popular. Justin fizzled out. But a few of this year's batch have gotten some pretty good jobs in Hollywood. I don't really run with that crowd (LOL) so I don't really know anything more than that.
Second Year winners: Ruben Stoddard and Clay Aiken (runner up). Both have platinum records, Clay's outselling Ruben's by a landslide. Both are incredibly popular, but there are many many websites for these guys.
All AI finalists get a record contract and they are all under contract for one year to AI. There is a tour with over 50 stops all over America - and they are always sold out.
One of the previous AI contestants wrote a song "I believe". It's a beautiful song and whoever wins the competition gets to record it as their first single. My guess is that it will go platinum in no time.
Yes, America embraces the AI contestants and they do well. We Americans are a funny lot - we love the underdog and anyone who has a rags-to-riches story, so AI is a perfect for us. We get to know the contestants every week a little better and many tears are shed (mine included) every Wednesday night for the contestant being eliminated.
Oh - and we LOVE (to hate?) Simon Cowell! He adds balance to the judges and he is always right - smug about it - but that's part of his persona.
I don't watch much TV, but AI and 24 are high on my list
Aloha,
Lorraine
