american groceries?

Milky way and snicker popables, delicious, they are the size of maltesers but filled with the above, they come in big bags like maltesers. No wonder our luggage is so heavy on return!

Hello, I hope it's ok that I jump on your thread. The title caught my eye.

Just a few quick questions please.. do you take these groceries home because they are cheaper here in the US or because you don't have access to them? I just assumed that most of these items were sold there as well as here in the US. Also, is it safe to assume you don't have Walmarts there? Is there an equivalent store?

We lived near Leeds for a couple of years while my father attended the University and I remember my Aunt sending us a box with dried pinto beans because we couldn't get them in England. You would have thought she sent us a pot of gold!!!!

Thanks is advance for your answers. It's fascinating to see how different things are but at the same time we are just the same aren't we!

Have a nice day!

Hi Goofybaseballmom, its mainly because if you could find these items in a specialist shop in the Uk they would be so expensive to buy, my personal vices are peanut butter reeces cups, oreos and hersheys kisses!

Last year we brought jars of spices (steak seasoning, pepper etc) it wasn't the fact they were cheaper but when we use them it brings back so many happy memories, sentimental I know.

HEY GUYS MY FIRST POAST :cheer2:

Last time we came back the US customs, TSO or whoever had broken the seals on all our pots of pills and just left them all rolling about loose in the bags!

Mmmmmm they sound yummy popcorn:: I'll have to look for them next time we're over.

This is too funny. This is why most Americans are overweight, you know. It's not McDonald's, it's Wal-mart. :lmao:
(Actually, it's Starbucks- but I digress...)
When we go to Canada, we always get Aero Bars because they're usually unavailable in the US. I think people always want things they don't get to have very often.

It's a good thing I can get Guinness here, that's all I have to say!

hi goofybaseballmom26!

most of the things i bring back to the uk are not available in the uk, like american cake mix. we get betty crocker fudge cake and carrot cake but non of the other flavours are available.

some american goods are available online in the uk, though they are very expensive as they are imported.

the english supermarket chain "asda" is owned by walmart, and is very simmilar in style. our local asda is a large supermarket compared to others in the uk and is called "asda wal mart supercentre" though it is less than an 1/8th of the size of american walmarts.

despite my love of all things american though, do think our cadburys chocolate is much better than hersheys :)

I think I need to amend my previous post to:
"It's a good thing I can get Guinness and Cadbury's here.":thumbsup2
Because you, chipndalefan, are absolutely correct!

It might be slightly strange, but my mother always stocks up on over-the-counter medication!

No Maya, not strange at all, i also buy over the counter meds, it's something i know a few fellow Dissers do also. It's because they're less expensive to buy and you can purchase tabs/pills etc... in much larger containers than at home ;)

Audrey:)

Interesting. I'm always worried that our rattling suitcases will attract an armed guard at customs ...

I've brought lots of edibles back in the past, but the new luggage restrictions are going to make that really tough.

How on earth do you bring back Mountain Dew? I ask cos I want to bring some back too! ha ha

Boxes and boxes of fruitloops for my sister who loves them!

I always bring back Three Musketeers and Milky Way Bars (my mate who lives in Seattle knows if he doesn't bring me over a big bag of these, Immigration are under strict instructions not to let him back in this country!!! only joking! love him really). I like those (I think they're called) BBQ Chex Mix, and those cheesy filled pretzel snacks, Hersheys cookies and creme choc, and Tootsie Rolls.

well, this time we brought back loads of ibuprofen and almondjoy chocolate bars- yum!! also little red and white mints from walmart, taco bell powdered taco seasoning mix from walmart too.

we also brought back some lucky charms for a friend who LOVES them!!

next time we go we'll be taking joe who's gluten free so we'll probably be bringing back some gf cookies too!!

You can't bring much - definitely not with the luggage limits now - but if I don't have too much in my hand luggage I can fit 2 bottles and a few cans in!

For a while we had a shop near us that sold it, but it was about 1.20 a can! Unsurprisingly, the shop closed within a year!
