I am trying to save some money here and have a quick question. When you buy off of ebay some of the dolls say they have small x's on their bottoms, does this make a difference in quality? Trying to decided on a just like you doll buy it off american girl site, or maybe a few dollars cheaper off of ebay.
thanks!

Those are from the MCM sale & I believe AG will not warranty them. The hospital might not fix them if something goes wrong.

They are from the sale. If you want to collect you may want to skip it, but for a toy it would be fine. I got one once with hair problems! I didn't try to send it back because I didn't want to pay for a new wig.

If the doll is for play, it should be fine. We have some dolls from the MCM sale (with the X's) and they are great. Any flaws are very minimal and some of the dolls, I can't even see what might have been wrong with them.

Keep in mind when bidding though, many people got the Just Like You Dolls from the MCM sale this month for $25. Over the summer they were $35 I believe. Don't pay a huge markup if you can avoid it!

Thanks everyone for the quick answers, now I know not to pay to much for them. I am all new to this american girl stuff. I ordered the bitty baby package from QVC for my 3 year old daughter. Then the american girl magazine came in the mail and my 8 year old saw one she wants. Now I know not to bid to high on the doll also, I knew if anyone knew you guys would.

An FYI with the MCM (Madison Children's Museum benefit) sale. It's my understanding folks at the sale agree not to resell merchandise purchased there. (And every year I hear reports of people going away with trucks full of stuff. Must be awfully nice to be buying for their whole town like that. :rolleyes1)

In the Tuesday Morning flyer for their Nov 3 sale they have an AG size table, 2 chairs and tea set all for $24.99

I just picked up AMerican Girl Books at a garage sale for .50....hoping the nieces still read'm.

The hospital will still fix dolls with an x just like any others. When you send a doll to the hospital you are paying for the service and they have no probelsm taking your money - or mine at least.
The x is very tiny and is placed in the corner of the rear seams where they come together - not at all noticeable unless you are specifically looking for it. It is placed there to prevent returns to AG for full retail price, not for doll hospital reference should she arrive with an "ouch-ie" accompanied by repair form and payment years later.

Over the summer, dolls started Saturday morning at $55-$65 plus WI sales tax - not a mega savings or a huge profit potential if resold when purchased at that price. Mia was at full catalog price, as were all her accessories. Only limited dolls - those nobody bought the first time - were reduced to $35 later on.

I just came from last week's sale. The mob mentality was absolutely horrible. MCM was not prepared for the madhouse it quickly became and completely under-estimated the turnout. Lines were hours long, both for entry and for checkout. There were no porta-pots brought in like they do for the July sale and in the morning those waiting in line were not allowed to use the warehouse restroom. Thankfully that changed later in the day, but at 11 am DD8 and I were told to "go find a bush". When the doors opened we were crushed against the tables, pushed, shoved, and, several times, trapped. A grown man grabbed two clothing boxes right out of DD8's hands.

Having witnessed the craziness of last week's sale, anybody who successfully fought thru that crazed crowd and poor conditions for a full day (and it did take all day) just to resell for a few dollars deserves some profit IMO. No way would I do it. Heck, I was so anxious to get out of there after several hours that I even forgot to buy a few things DD8 had on her list.:guilty:

I get a kick out of the holier-than-thou members of an AG message board who will criticize ebay/craigslist sellers for making $10 but hire "personal shoppers" and pay them $50 "for their time & gas" to buy sale items for them while they sit at home. I spoke with one lady from Chicago while waiting in line who said she made over $400 just shopping for board members. She'd listed on ebay in the past but won't now after discovering that "shopping" pays so much better with no need to put up her own money first. And to think, I do that free for family & friends every year. You know, even though we enjoy the trip, my time is pretty valuable too - wonder how they'd feel if I started billing them...:rolleyes1

I personally don't have a problem with ebay resellers making a profit, I just don't think they should make $50 on a doll they bought for $25 when they re-sell for $75. A $10 or $20 profit is more than okay with me though.

My DH and Mom went to the MCM sale on the 20th and they too said it was insane. (I wanted to go, but couldn't because we have a 2 month old at home.) They were only buying for my girls and my neices though, not acting as personal shoppers for people. It was the first time we've tried an MCM sale and they were appalled at the way people behaved over dolls.

I know I personally wouldn't pay $70 or more for an MCM doll off Ebay, but I know there are people who will and do.

I have to agree with the craziness! I think some people have to remember that for some people these are dolls for children to play with and for some people these are dolls that will sit up on a bookshelf and be looked at. I've wanted to get to the WI sale and will probably never make it since I live in MA, but the more I hear about how crazy the MCM sale is the less I want to go.

Wow, if I lived anywhere near WI I would totally advertise my services as a personal shopper for MCM. I could use an extra $400 a couple times a year. ;) I post on an AG board (probably the same one you do, from your description of the members) and always wish I could make it to MCM or even just to the outlet. Perhaps someday I'll be able to make the trip.

Congrats on your new baby! That's a much better activity than an mcm sale! If this was their first mcm sale, please make sure your mom and DH know it isn't always like that so maybe, sometime in the far distant future when - like childbirth - the pain of it all eventually fades from memory, they'll go back and do it again. The DDs and I do it just for fun - it's a great mother-daughter opportunity for us that even DD20 isn't too old to enjoy (though she doesn't play with dolls anymore, she loves the exuse for a girls-only trip). :thumbsup2

It was nice last week that volunteers announced just before turning the first crowds loose that the items being sold were not seconds or returns but instead just factory overstock and excess items no longer in the catalog. I wonder if that will become the norm for future mcm sales?

My problem with deciding how much a reseller can charge for a doll is simply that, most times, the bidder sets the price by bidding, so to condemn a seller for honoring his committment to sell at the ending price doesn't seem fair. I sell AG stuff on ebay, but it's almost always things the girls have played with and tired of, excess gifts, or collections from the seniors at dance who, sadly, now prefer $$ for ski club/dance competitions/car ins/ect to dolls. Sometimes those things go for prices I think are too high, other times too low. Usually I don't have a lot of control over it though - the bidders do. What I do know is that if you paid $25+tax on top of a $50 fee to a personal shopper in addition to shipping costs, you'd easily have a $75+ doll even though you didn't buy it on ebay from a reseller - and it would likely still be cheaper than a doll purchased directly from AG.

That said, there's really no excuse for allowing a certain ebay powerseller who will remain nameless here, but was recognized by at least the two volunteers I spoke with while waiting, to come in with his wife multiple times and buy entire cart loads of the same item then use mcm volunteers to load his rented u-haul truck at the July sale full of goodies for resale. In additon to a nice chat while waiting in the members line with the PS lady, I also got to overhear quite a conversation between this guy and his wife. I can honestly say this trip was educational, as I learned things I'd have been less jaded not knowing. Integrity does have a price for some people. Still once paid for, the property is yours, and you should be able to do what you wish with it...

OP - this conversation made me think of some advice for you, since you said you are new to AG. If you are going to look for AG items on eBay, do your research first. Check out the AG website to see what is currently offered and the retail prices. I have seen many an eBay auction where the seller listed something as "rare" or "retired" that is in fact still offered for sale direct from AG. These auctions often go for more than the AG retail price because buyers are uninformed. (Occasionally its because the item is an older version of a current item, but in that case only a collector would really care about the difference & be willing to pay more for the older version.)

There are also a lot of places to get non-AG branded clothes that will fit 18" AG dolls. For a play doll for a child, the off-brand clothes are usually fine.

I bought 2 dolls at the warehouse sale in the summer of 2008. The dolls are fine, the x is very tiny (like the size of this type) and the hospital WILL take them in for repairs (we sent one of ours in - no problem).

If the savings were significant, I'd have no problem buying an AG doll from ebay with an "x". However, I've seen some dolls go for $75 with $15 in shipping ... not really saving any money when you can count on AG to have free shipping sometime during the Christmas shopping season.

Always check AG's site first. It doesn't even hurt to call as occassionally there's something available in low quantity that isn't shown online. AGPlace stores may also have something left that is sold out online and can ship it to you.

Free shipping code until Oct 31 is PF99058
