Does anyone subscribe to AG magazine? My daughter loves the books and she likes getting magazines, but I was wondering if this was just one big commercial for the products. She will turn eight next month, but she is a young eight. Is the content appropriate?

Thanks!

Oh, I love American Girl magazine. It's a great down-to-earth girl-next-door magazine for the 7 to 12 age group. The think I love about it is that it features normal looking girls with a variety of normal interests( that is, NOT fashion, boys, makeup, texting, modeling or acting). There are no advertisements. It is completely different from the American Girl book series--nothing in common at all. I gave my DD16 American Girl magazine for about 6 years and I've been sending them to my Dneice11 for the past 4 years as well. I thought it was money well-spent.

I agree! I got that magazine when I was younger, and LOVED it! :thumbsup2

I agree with the PP, my daughter will be 10 in October and has been getting this magazine for about 2 years-perfect for that age group!

DD8 has gotten it the past year and likes it. There's actually very little in there that is promoting the regular AG products. (There used to be more included, I guess, short stories about the dolls, things to make for the dolls. Now really the only thing is there's a page to cut down to make a mini version of the magazine, for a doll or stuffie.)

As others said, it's a nice, wholesome sort of stories, no boy crazy or fashionista articles. It's for young girls to be yougn girls.

Thank you very much for the input! This sounds like something my daughter will enjoy.

I would absolutely feel comfortable letting an 8 year old read AG Magazine.:thumbsup2 I love that it isn't one of those boy-crazy, beauty tips, fashion focused magazines. They have crafts, recipes, short stories, fun activities, games, quizzes and other stuff. Compared to a lot of other magazines for that age group I think it's really clean, appropriate stuff.

Now don't get me started on 10 year olds reading Seventeen and CosmoGirl.:scared1: Yikes. There's no way I would let my daughter read those until she was at least sixteen or seventeen, minimum.

When I was a kid I used to get AG and used to love it. I think it is not only age appropriate but there were great tips for starting school and little games.

DD has gotten this magazine since she was around 8 or 9 years old. This is the first year we are no longer renewing her subscription since she is 13 now and the content is getting to be too young for her. It's a fabulous magazine! I highly recommend it. Another great one is Girl's Life for ages 10 -15. DD is still subscribed to this one. No ads and only age-appropriate stuff in there, too.

I have tons of AG back issues that I hate to toss in the trash. If anyone is interested send me a pm. Just pay shipping.

ITA with everyone here! My DD 11, still loves the content, ideas, stories, etc. She likes the magazine MORE than her dolls now, tho! :confused3

The only (regular) downside to their magazine, as with ALL others, are the pre-paid postcards that FILL the pages! LOL

I'd love them for DD8!

DD loved AG Magazine when she was about 8 and 9. We have since aged out of it and into PopStar and other teen mags. Now she's asking for Teen People, guess my baby is growing up:)

We've gotten it for years - first for DD19, then for the younger princess. If anything, I'd have to complain that they don't have nearly as much doll related stuff in it today as they used to. I liked the monthly paper dolls, craft ideas, and ads in magazines of past years very much.

I guess you can tell who the real doll addict around here is - I just use the girls as a cover... :lmao:

I got it when I was younger and LOVED it! It will be perfect for her age. And in no way is it a huge advertisement.

Teen People is no longer in publication. :(

Seventeen is a great alternative and I started getting it around that age.

Just FYI, the American Girl magazine that some of us remember may not be the one that the OP is asking about.

The title American Girl was originally owned by the Girl Scouts of America, who published a magazine of that name from 1921 to 1979. I subscribed to it in the late 1960's and 70's. It covered far more than just scouting, but if you paid attention you would know that it was connected to scouting.

The new magazine is published by Pleasant Company Publications as an adjunct to their American Girl line of books and toys. It started publication in 1992.

I used to get AG Magazine when I was younger and I loved it! Definitely appropriate for an 8-year old.

Yes, my DD11 gets it and likes it. Everything is targeted to the 8-12 age range. Yes, they do talk about the dolls but there are also activities (to do with your dolls and without) and articles that are relevant to the age range. I would say try it for a year; you don't have to renew if you don't like it. It is on par with their other non-doll publications like the cookbook and the Care and Keeping of You, which are age appropriate.
