Just got a letter from Am Express about buying a policy for Primary car rental insurance. Goes into effect when you rent a car with your am express and will be your primary Insurance. Cost is $28.00 1 time fee per rental, up to 40 some days. Full coverage. Anyone else get this? Or know anything about this? States covers all types of cars luxury, suv's and even out of the country coverage?

I always worry about "what if" so thinking about? not that expensive and way cheaper than my deductiable.

MKY princess:

If it covers what you said it covers and things that normal credit card insurance does not cover (convertibles, exotic cars, rentals longer than 15 days, rentals outside your country of residence, etc.) just compute the cost per day. If the American Express plan charges $28. for a four day rental, that comes to $7. per day.

Questions to ask, or see if the answers are in the fine print:
(1) Is "loss of use" (time spent in the repair shop) and "diminuation of value" (estimated reduction in price recovered at the end of the year auction when the rental company buys new cars) covered?
(2) Do you have a different credit card to rent cars when you are doing one or two day rentals (still costs you $28. or more per rental) and will you remember which card to use?
(3) What is the maximum dollar amount American Express will pay out?

(Most "free" rental insurance benefits that come with credit cards is "secondary" That means your own insurance pays all it can and will and the credit card coverage pays what is left, namely the deductible.

Then you may be surcharged since the accident is regarded as "your fault" unless proven otherwise.

Whereas with this American Express program, the new $28-$40 coverage is primary, it pays up to its limit before your own insurance kicks in and you will likely not get "charged with an accident")

I have no fee-no charge rental insurance coverage through my Visa Gold Card-they are primary insurer for CLD and loss of use. Might be worth checking into.

What bank is it who is issuing a Visa credit card with car rental insurance benefit that is primary?

If you check some of the other threads on this board there may be some other Visa Gold Cards this applies to-mine happens to be RBC.
