America West question from Aussie

Hi there,
When we fly in from Australia, we are connecting in San Fran with America West, I have never heard of them as we haven't flown much in the US, just wondering if they are a good airline? Are they fairly safe, on time etc? Hope that doesn't sound silly but I am a fearfull flyer and like to go with prominent, safe airlines. Thanks heaps
