Well, I guess the title says it all. I'm still researching options to replace our HP desktop that had a motherboard failure this week. (Who knew a motherboard could get puffy? :rotfl:) I think I'm going with 4gb of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. Now, the question is what is the better processor: AMD or Intel Pentium?

I thought I had all this figured out but then I got to thinking that I might do a laptop instead of a desktop replacement. I know I'll eventually want a desktop, but we've got a Disney trip coming up soon and will want a laptop to take with us. So, I'm now thinking I may go laptop for the time being and then replace the desktop.

I don't know....so many options! :surfweb:

I guess it depends on the type of Intel or AMD processor. They do tend to vary. If in doubt, ask an expert, which I sadly am not

The vast majority of computer users will never really stress their processor. If you are comparing Intel and AMD processors with comparable specs just go with the cheapest. If you are doing anything truly math intensive (video editing, analytics involving complex algorithms, etc) go with Intel because their math logic unit usually tests as better.

Thanks firedancer. I was hoping you would answer. We are leaning towards Intel. My younger daughter does like to do video editing. All in all, I know we should go mac, but right now, it's just not in the budget.

I think the "should go mac" comment is interesting. My daughter convinced us to buy her a Mac for college. They are wonderful computers, however she finding that it is not compatiable with some of her online classes. And when she was applying for jobs online, a surprising number of company websites that take online applications are PC only.

As for video editing, I work in TV, as does my wife, who has been a video editor for over 30 years. Final Cut Pro is great editing software, but out in the business world, where the cost is the deciding factor, you'll find very few TV stations us anything other that PC based editing software, AVID at both my job and my wifes.
