No, I have issues with how registries are used. They should not be used to hit people over the head with the recipients material demands for gifts. But rather to offer suggestions when asked for. Providing registry information should only be done at the givers request. It's really no different than verbally inviting someone to your home and then saying, "By the way, you'll be bringing the dessert, and we want that strawberry cheesecake from the bakery on 5th Ave. So just pick that up on your way."

Well the point of the registry IS to let your guests know exactly what you want and putting the little card in the invite is a convenient way to let them know, there are many who appreciate that. However it is up to the giver to decide to get something from it or use it as a guide. I think way too many people assume that registering for specific things is the same as demanding them and the recipient is some spoiled brat who will shun you and your gift if its not something they had on their list, but that happens less often than not.
What I get from your logic there should be no registry on paper but its okay to ask the bride or mom to be what they want. Which in my mind means you do have issues with a formal registry since its purpose is not to give suggestions but to give a wish list of specific items.

I think this comes pretty close to how I feel, also. My wife and I refused to do a registry because we didn't want anyone to assume that we expected a gift. We were just happy that they came - some from very far away.

Those that asked what we wanted/needed, we answered - but never without them having asked. Think about it like this - In Christmas Vacation, Clark decides to help cousin Eddie buy his children something for Christmas. Well, Eddie says someting like, "Wow! What a surprise!" Then pulls out the long list of things that he wanted Clark to buy him and his family. This is what a gift registry seems like to me.

We didn't plan to do a registry at first, but people of our parents' generation kept asking us where we were registered, and were honestly a little put out that we hadn't done it! :rotfl:

We can agree to disagree, seeing as you won't be inviting me to any gift giving events. ;)

The difference is I don't find the inclusion of registry "information helpful," I find it demanding and rude. As I first stated, you invite people to events, not gifts. There is simply no polite way to tell someone else how to spend their money - such as on these gifts for me! You're right in that I do view a registry as a suggestion, to be offered only when the information is requested. When asked, that's when someone could mention that they are registered at _____ .

To me the issue is one of manners, not an issue of registering.

Anyway, OP, I hope the people who have asked find your registry helpful. It sounds like the gifts are not the first thing on your mind, which I very much respect. :thumbsup2

Yes we just wanted to make it as easy and cheap as possible so if people wanted to get us something they could. Honestly making the registry has made me go out and buy some of the items on it.
