In celebration of its pair of Mozart in the Jungle Golden Globes victories last Sunday, Amazon is reducing the price of Amazon Prime memberships this weekend. Subscribing will cost $73 — down from the regular $99 — from 9PM PT Friday until 11:59PM local time Sunday night.

As is normally the case with these promotions, Amazon is targeting them at new Prime members only. But you can finagle your way around that by purchasing a gift subscription and saving it for whenever your own existing membership is set to expire. Head to this page over the weekend to take advantage of Amazon's brief offer.

I saw this...always tempting.... but I also read that you can't purchase a gift either to get around the new membership rule....they are cracking down on that (I did it myself one year) now I have to decide if I want to do this again.... even tho 2 day shippingis a joke, I am tempted....I could always watch some of their tv to make it worth it:rotfl2::rotfl:

My Prime membership renews this month so I'd like to find a way to get this special rate. I did it last year at renewal time, but I don't remember how...:upsidedow

The site says that it does not apply to gift subscriptions :(. Trying to renew and it won't let me...

Also, be careful if you share your prime with others in your household. The old plan allowed 4 people to share. Now, it is only shareable with 1. So, if you cancel an old prime membership to take advantage of this, you will renew on the new plan.

to pp you probably bought a gift membership for yourself and set it to apply on your new date.... they don't allow that anymore for this deal...at least not that I know

I have been a prime member since 2006 and can count on one hand the number of times I have had any problems with my packages not arriving on time. And I am a 2-3 times week Amazon shopper.

We also do watch their tv, listen to prime music and borrow books so we find prime worthwhile.

I find things truly shipping from Amazon, I get in 2 days. But things marked "Prime" that are from other sellers often take 4 or more days now. I believe it is due to the Ship by Region program: http://www.moneytalksnews.com/amazon-prime-longer-pledges-free-2-day-shipping-all-items/ Problem is these items are still marked Prime so I have to keep searching through all sellers on items to find one that actually ships in 2 days.

And that makes sense as I almost exclusively order items that are shipped and sold by Amazon.

My Prime just renewed at the end of Dec so I canceled it and open one in my DH name and got the $73 price.

They will give you the deal if you cancel your current account and then open another. Get them on chat before you try it..... there are several different ways they can do it.... gift card, etc if it does not work the first time.

As mentioned above though, you lose shared users so be aware of that. I am going to renew at regular price for this reason.

AMAZON prime ~ 2 day shipping ~ works fine ~ in my neck of the woods.

if they would stick to using fed ex or ups it might not be a problem here but their default shipper for us is most commonly usps which is not reliable.

I did a trial freebie membership last summer and had issues w/the 2 day guaranteed shipments that came through usps which I explained to amazon when I told them I wasn't opting to sign on to pay for membership. they gave me a song and dance about how they were working w/their shippers and offered another free month. at that point they started using fed ex/ups more often so no problems w/delivery and I opted during their 60 odd dollar 9/15 promotion to sign up for a year.

I cut them some slack during the holiday buying period b/c of the nature of deliveries during that period in general but I started noticing that more and more they were shifting away from fed ex/ups back to usps. with the new year though it's proving that usps has become their go to vendor and as a result nothing arrives on time. sure, I appreciate that my one year membership has already been extended free of charge because of this, and that after reaching that maximum w/in a calendar month I've been given other financial perks-but none of it's worth the 20 minute minimum back and forth on phone/by chat that it takes to resolve and track down these items (amazon finally admitted to me last week that the usps tracking that shows items as 'delivered' is more often than not a coding that that the usps 'anticipates delivering').

That is so weird. USPS delivers fine for us. I don't like when Amazon ships my stuff Ontrac. They actually deliver on the right day but they show up at about 11pm or later. Thankfully, Amazon isn't using them as much, at least for us.

I think a lot depends on how close you live to a warehouse. I live outside of Denver and most of our items are shipped from Vegas, so pretty close.

Thanks for the heads up! My Prime expired awhile back, and I decided to spend
the $73 to have it back.

Amazon's system automatically picks which option will be the "best" to get your package to you. You can call and yell and scream up and down til you're blue in the face (not that you do), and nothing will change. Amazon is a leading reason why the USPS isn't dead yet.

I'm sure they have numbers to crunch that would prove me wrong, but I don't see how it's the 'best' shipping option cost wise for them when in the last 2 weeks in exchange for usps delivering 2 or more days late on 3 separate deliveries totaling $36.10 amazon has refunded to my credit card/told me to keep the 2 of the items upon arrival at no cost for a total of $21.96 in addition to another month's free extension of my prime membership for the 3rd.

I've actually had great experiences with USPS delivery the last 6 months, I especially like the Sunday deliveries they are doing now! But I realize a lot depends on the quality of your local post office workers - in my case, they really seem committed to great customer service. My delivery people do not pre-scan packages as delivered prior to doing so, they scan them only at the time of actual delivery.

But like another PP, I cringe when I see Ontrac as the shipper. Despite a huge note on my front door to NOT leave packages there (and to leave them in another secure location that requires they take less than 10 extra steps), they none the less leave the packages at the front door just about every time. My house is on a busy street, and packages left at the front door are not only an invitation to steal the package, but also calls attention to my house - and the fact that I have lots of new "stuff" - which raises the likelihood of a general burglary of the home. FedEx, UPS and USPS all manage to see the note and follow the instructions, but Ontrac? Nope.

Keep in mind that if you have Prime membership and your package does not arrive on the guaranteed delivery date, you are eligible to have your Prime membership extended for free for a month every time this happens, up to a year. You just have to contact Amazon and ask; it is not automatic. I've earned almost a year of free prime since I last renewed!

I did it..... here's hoping the prime works well.... when I stopped it last summer it was not so great with the 2 day thing..... but in general I like Amazon customer service policies....
