I warn anyone about tablets with only 8GB onboard storage, even if you can add an SD card to it. If you want this primarily as an eReader, or to watch Amazon Prime stuff, it's probably great. But if you are thinking you can stress it with a lot of things that higher end tablets can do (simple video editing, spreadsheets/word docs/powerpoints, etc) then this probably isn't a good buy.

@MomToOne . My kids use these to simply play games and watch videos. We (currently) have no use for the higher end stuff. I can't believe it when I see babies and toddlers with iPads! And I'll just nicely say to the parents, "Oh my - I wouldn't trust my kids with my iPad." To which they'd reply, "Oh, it's their iPad." Yikes! I'm sure as my kids get older and can start using it for school they will be a great investment. But for car rides, doctor appointments etc. the Kindle is great for keeping my 6 and 8 year old busy.

Oh, it's with Special Offers. Without on Amazon is $54.99, $39.99 with. The ads don't bother my kids or myself so I guess I never worried about it. We just swipe it away.

I totally understand what someone would buy an iPad for their child. They work, and will continue to work for years. I decided that the couple hundred dollar outlay for a refurbished previous gen iPad was a better use of funds than continuing to replace the piece of junk tablets that don't work correctly for very long. So far it's been the wise choice as it has lasted 2 years with no problems. Tablets in the $50 range tend to have limited memory and processing capacity as well as less than ideal OS so even simple games start bugging pretty rapidly. The iPad was by far the better investment for my child. If you worry about them damaging it, a tuf or lifeproof case fixes that.

It you want it for simply watch movies this is a good buy. And if damaged then you aren't out that much money. Don't forget to purchase it through your Ebates acct for another 1% cash back along with your 5% off red card purchase and in store pick up.

Both DD and DS have kindles. I love them. I think they work great for what the children use them for. Both kindles 2 years old and still work well, though at $50 I wouldn't care about having to replace them. They drop them down the stairs/on the floor, etc (accidentally of course) and the Kangaroo cases protected them! We have SD cards in them, mainly for extra storage for movies (Disney movies Anywhere for the win!) I guess I could have spent $500 instead of $50, but I don't look at electronics as a long term investment. Technology changes so quickly and that expensive tablet (iPad, samsung, etc) is worthless in a few years anyway. Especially when they stop putting out updates for them.

A Fire is 100% the tablet I would buy for a young kid. The hardware can stand up to abuse pretty well, and the parental controls on the software are decent as well. Older kids would probably not be satisfied with the performance, and tech-savvy teens and adults would definitely want something better, but it's not a bad starter device - especially if the primary function will be media consumption.

my sister got this for her 5 year old in October 2015 and it is holding up well. my niece watches Netflix, uses the watch Disney App, Nick and plays games on it. It has a screen protector and cover. good device for a younger child. easy to set up parental controls so nothing is "purchased" by accident.
