I have a question for all of you. We have rented cars on too many occasions to mention and lately I have been noticing a trend.

For instance, I searched National and got a rate of $307 for an intermediate car for 10 days on their web site with NO Codes. I then went to the AARP site (I am a member) and followed the link to National and supposedly got the "discount" and the price came to $307! I then plugged in the same days with the COSTCO 25% discount code and got the price of $307! Now I was really curious so I called the 800 number and asked for a rate for the same period and got a rate of $307 using NO codes or web site. Now I am beginning to wonder if all this time I am spending searching for codes is worth the effort since I don't seem to be getting a bargain.

Anyone else????

That's not happened to me so far. I am still getting a better rate when I use AARP or DC codes for dates in December. I also combine those codes with an entertainment coupon for $20 off a weekly rental.

My guess[/] is that the supply of cars is very limited during the period you are requesting the rental. The number of cars available for code/coupon discounts is limited. It wouldn't surprise me if at a certain "inventory level" all the codes return the "regular" rates. Just a thought that may explain your situation.

This is happening to me, too.

Same $199 rate no matter if thru AARP, NWA, Discover card, whatever.

I even changed up the dates completely and still only received a measly 5 percent discount.

I had the same results until others posters suggested cleaning out the cookies on my computer. And it worked.

Initially, I plugged in no codes, contracts, etc. and then kept on plugging in different cupons, contracts and it didn't change.

Deleted the cookies. Plugged in same dates with cupons, contracts, etc. and got a decent discount/

I am getting a much better rate using the AARP code and a BJ's coupon than I would have otherwise, meaning all the many codes out there. I love National cause you can plug in a rate code and a different coupon code and they accept them. Works for me.
I have a one week rental in Sept. full size, all taxes and pesky fees for 159.00. Of course, I keep on checking. :)

We had the same trouble with Alamo awhile ago, on the website. So I called asked for the straight rate they quoted 357.00 for 8 days in CA, full size. When I said "whoa way too much, I guess I will call around. Thanks for looking." The rep said hold on, asked if I had any memberships and then found me a rate of 197.00 for the same car.

Try calling and seeing the rep can work with you a bit, some won't but you mayhit one who likes to work their system.

The rate I got was legit, I did have the memberships and had to show the ID cards but it was well worth it.

Ok, I'll try Ed's suggestion.

And Gail, why don't you make my reservation for me next time, LOL.
