Well, with only three weeks left until we go to The World in October, I'm trying to get together a list of all of the photography gear/stuff that I will be bringing along.

This will be my first real trip with all of my stuff (other than a weekend in DC) and want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Input is appreciated!

  • Nikon D90
    Nikon 18-200
    Sigma 30
    Nikon 10.5 Fisheye
    Tokina 11-16 UWA
SB-600 (do I really even need this?)

    Tripod
    Gorillapod (as a backup)

    Memory cards
    Lens pen
    CP filter
    ND 8 filter
    ND 400 filter
    Step up rings for filters
    Extra battery
    Battery charger
    Cable release
    Wireless release
    Small flashlight

    RS-4 Black Rapid strap
OpTech neck strap (in case I don't like the RS-4)

    Holga 120 CN
    Color film
    Black & white film
    35mm film
    Changing bag

:faint:

Thank goodness most of this stuff is small miscellaneous junk. I was starting to feel like I'd need a checked bag just for what I have listed.

I think what you left out is someone to help you carry all your equipment. I would like to volunteer myself. :thumbsup2

Your list does look good, How many gigs of memory cards are you bringing?

Dave pirate:

Rocket blaster?

I also like to bring a small screwdriver for tightening connections on the tripod.

Dave pirate:

That's what I have DH for. :thumbsup2

I think I've got like....30 gigs of SD cards. Surely more than enough for a week-long trip, let alone a 3-day trip like we will be taking. ;)

1 Gallon zip lock bag in case it rains.

Question for you about this. Do you think the gallon zip lock is necessary if we will have a few ponchos in the bag? I can obviously put the camera in the zip lock, but I'll still need something to cover my bag and whanot.

Rocket blaster?

I also like to bring a small screwdriver for tightening connections on the tripod.

Got the rocket blaster, knew I forgot to add something to that stoopid list. Screwdriver is a good idea. DH has a leatherman (utility tool/pocket knife thing)---do you think that can be brought into the parks?

Wait- Is all this stuf for your one day MNSSHP trip?

Nope, that changed a long while ago, Jeff. :rotfl2: It's now a 3 day MNSSHP trip. Instead of driving, we're flying. Instead of camping, we're staying at CSR. As you can see, things don't spiral out of control quickly in just the photography sector of my everyday life. ;)

I kind of have to bring all of this stuff with me down there.

The Sigma 30 for rides/Spectro/walk-around.
The 18-200 in case I get lazy.
The Tokina 11-16 because, well---I bought it and haven't used it yet. :headache:
The Nikon 10.5 because I have to return it to another DISer at MNSSHP (thanks again, Karyl!) :thumbsup2

The tripod is a given. The Gorillapod I may leave home, but I'm worried I'll break the tripod and need it.

The Holga I could leave at home, but why? I have three whole days of Disney goodness to try it out!!

Do you have a back-up camera or camera body? I was there last year during Christmas, and my Canon 40D decided to break on the very 1st night of my week-long trip. My wife was taking a picture of me and Cinderella, and the submirror (part of the shutter mechanism) broke! (How did it know?!?!?)

Luckily, I had a 30D back in the hotel room as back-up, so we could take pictures the rest of the week. Yes, we ended up going back to Cinderella on a different night to re-take my picture with her. :)

I sent the 40D back to Canon, and they repaired it for free. At the time, it was a little bit past my 1-year warranty, and it's worked fine after the repair.

Yes, I would bring your external flash, as well. Actually, WDW is really where I learned how to use my flash at WDW. Lots and lots of opportunities to practice there. :)

I love using my speedlite on POTC! I get crystal clear pictures while using it compared to all the blurry ones I got before! I LOVE IT!

;)

Did ya take any pictures with it yet?? I havent seen any show up here. I was in Philly again on Sunday and I was going to call you but it was a good thing I didnt because when I got there Jason was having tub drain problems and we spent a good portion of the time I had there running to get parts and fixing that and traffic was a nightmare due to the first regular home game for the Eagles. I think I was the only person on I76 not wearing an Eagles jersey. He drove home on Thursday night to get my D300 and all my gear to help a friend of his shoot a wedding. I drove down on Sunday to retrieve my baby. Talk about withdrawal .... I had NO camera from Thursday pm until Sunday. It was worth it though for him to have the experiences he had.

Dont forget to pack your MNSSHP ticket... mine came in the mail this week :)

I try not to use my flash on any of the dark indoor rides. I've been "caught" once before by the "voice from above" on POTC. A castmember announced on the overhead speaker not to use flash photography. I'm not sure if the "voice" was referring to me, since I hadn't even started taking pictures yet (and certainly without flash). There were others on the same boat as me, so I'm not even sure who the "voice" was referring to.

While you do get better pictures of the dark rides using flash, I think it's pretty annoying to other guests. The only time I might consider using flash on these rides is if my wife and I are the only ones on the ride, such as on "It's a Small World" when we're the only ones on the boat AND when the other boats in front of us and behind us are empty.

Try using your external flash when you're out at night or if you're posing with characters. :)

Don't use your speedlight on POTC or any of the dark rides. I'm sure that your pictures come out very nicely, but those speedlights really do have a way of distracting and ruining the experience for folks. Photographers have been getting bashed on some of the other boards for this, with good reason. I don't mean to lecture you in any way, but even as we are all so enthusiastic for our wonderful hobby, we need to follow the rules about when and where we can take flash pictures. If you have a fast lens, (like a 1.4 or 1.8 or so), you'll be amazed to see the pics you can get with that without any flash. If you don't have a fast lens, you now have the perfect excuse to get one, right? LOL Thanks. :goodvibes

Ann....
Hummmmm.....I'd probably leave the SB600 home and work on fine tuning my no flash "night shots"...your lenses are certainly suitable for these shots..

Besides your "main" bag for all the gear...do you use a "day" bag at the parks??...Don't forget it !!:goodvibes

Don't forget your "lime green Mickey" so I can stop by and say hello!! :thumbsup2

I would definitely leave this home, but maybe that's just me. On a three day trip, you will have way more than enough to do with the other new/relatively new toys. I would leave the Holga more for tinkering around at home and other circumstances.

With only three days at WDW as a casual guest, I wouldn't want to waste my time messing with it. Again, that's just me. I personally never want to touch a roll of film ever again, so perhaps I am a bit biased. I would leave that type of thing to people like Jeff, who have the luxury of distance to WDW.

I would definitely take the SB-600. Then again, we like to get a lot of pictures of ourselves.

I got it!

Ann, your SB 600 can be very helpful as fill in a lot of places at Disney. I carry a flash often with me, but knowind you, your I gotta have list is long enough to maybe leave it behind.

My only suggestion is you have been planning this and your Christmas trip for a year. You have spent countless hours planning on this board and I am sure in other ways. Go, have a good time. You are at one of the truly magical places in the world. RELAX! You will take better pictures.

I always carry a small notebook and pen in my camera bag.

One word......iPHONE. :thumbsup2

Do you have a back-up camera or camera body?

I do not, and don't plan to have one probably for quite some time. My D90 is only 8 months oldish, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't break. ;)

Don't worry---I got it also! John's not the only one who can detect sarcasm here!!

I did---took it to a sculpture garden last weekend but didn't really find anything that I thought really showcased the fisheye. This weekend, I think I'm going to take a walk around our town with the camera to try out my new Black Rapid strap and I'll definitely be bringing it with me then as well. Don't worry---if I really have nothing post-worthy before October, I'm sure I'll have some cool ones from The World. :thumbsup2 Sit tight Karyl!! :rotfl:

I'm inclined to leave the SB-600 home because I don't need many pictures of us, we aren't doing any character meals or anything and my pop-up will work for fill---so what else might I really need it for? Now December is another story, I'll definitely bring it then.

I do have a day bag, his name is Erik. :rotfl2:

When will you be in The World? :hyper: :hyper: It seems like we may overlap. How sad if it took a trip to Florida to get together some people that are both within an hour of eachother.

I would leave the Holga more for tinkering around at home and other circumstances.

Hmmmmmmm. First, there really isn't anything to mess with on the Holga. No aperture or shutter speed to set---it's just a film version of a p&s. Second, I do see your point about taking the time to play with my newer/better stuff like the UWA, but I'll also be back for 7 days in December, so October is more of just a chance to start getting the feel for shooting in WDW.

The SB-600 I honestly feel like I should bring, but have no interest in actually doing it. Other than pictures of yourselves, is there anything you have found a use for an external flash for? Fill flash I can just use my pop-up for. Not necessarily the ideal solution, but it'll save some weight in the camera bag for sure.

I got it!

Same here, you would think that after seeing so many of Mark's responses on these boards, sarcasm would be much more easily detectable. ;)

but knowing you, your I gotta have list is long enough to maybe leave it behind.

So what are you trying to say, John?! I do have self control, I really do!!! :cutie:

My only suggestion is you have been planning this and your Christmas trip for a year. You have spent countless hours planning on this board and I am sure in other ways. Go, have a good time. You are at one of the truly magical places in the world. RELAX! You will take better pictures.

"I will have the best of times." That is my daily mantra that I keep repeating to myself. Really, this trip is just an opportunity for me and DH to celebrate our wedding anniversary, my birthday and get a weekend alone from work/house/bills/etc.

You may not believe it, but I absolutely refuse to not have a good time---it's Disney. If I can't get a shutter speed or aperture right, if my tripod is being wonky and I can't get it set up right, I will honestly scrap the whole photography thing for the time being and enjoy myself because I have 7 days in December to make up for it. :thumbsup2

Bring the Holga Ann, you'll have a ton of fun with it there! :woohoo: And don't forget the black electrical tape. :goodvibes

Oh, and maybe instead of a flashlight bring a few glow sticks or glow bracelets to keep in your bag. I break them when it gets dark, and then I have a nice non-intrusive light inside my camera bag at night. ;) It really helps out during Wishes or dark rides when I want to find something in my bag without ticking everybody else off. :upsidedow

Have a great trip! Don't forget to post the obligatory gear pic before you leave. :goodvibes
