We are going on our Disney Wonder Cruise in May of 2005. Our son will be 6 then, and it is going to be a big surprise.

However, his new best friend in kindergarten is currently on the Magic as we speak!! (Hi Ryan!) I keep asking my son "Where did you say Ryan went on vacation again?"

"A Disney Cruise, mom :( "

me: "Oh wow, he sure is lucky!"

him: "Yeah, I wanna go on a Disney cruise"

Does this make me an evil mom, or am I just helping to make it more exciting when we actually do go? It occurred to me that he would have no way of knowing what a Disney cruise was otherwise, because he's never seen any commercials for it.

I can't wait until I can spring it on him!:teeth:

Evil,wvil,wvil. Off with ya head!!!!:scared:

I wish I could keep my mouth shut long enough to surprise my kids! However, I like the way you think...

BTW, be careful leaving those Disney Cruise brochures lying about. You might inadvertantly help him with his reading skills.
"Hey, Mom, what's a s-t-a-t-e-r-o-o-m?"

You know, last Christmas we decided to surprise our DDs with a trip to WDW to see the holiday decorations. We decided to tell NO ONE to make sure it was a surprise. I was SOOOOO excited!

THEN my girls dance team decided to have a party the very day we were going to leave. I told them they couldn't go to the party (but gave no reason). It became ugly (I kept saying, I can't tell you why, you just can't go). Their friends called with ideas on how they could talk us into letting them go. Moms offered to pick them up and bring them home.

Finally, I couldn't take it any more and I told the girls WHY they couldn't go to the party. Do you know what they said to me?

"Mom, I wish you wouldn't have told us! It would have been great to be surprised. Why did you have to tell us?"

So, I guess my advice is to just keep it a surprise. It will be worth it in the end.

I booked our cruise which we sailed on last August, seven months before as a birthday suprise for my daughter. I managed to keep it a suprise right up until the day of her birthday 2 days before we went and boy was it worth it. The look on her face when she opened the cruise documents was priceless.

Take care he's not able to see what you are writing on the Disboards. I always had one eye over my shoulder.

Mind you I have gone grey in the process after nearly slipping up on more than one occasion like when purchasing sun lotion(she knew we were going to Florida) she asked me "why such a high sun factor" well it's really hot in the Bahamas "why the Bahamas" she said "Well because it's close to Florida and thats the way the sun travels" was the best I could come up with in a split second.

Yes she thought mum had gone crazy on a few occasions, but it was more than worth it on her birthday.

Keep the suprise a suprise. Good Luck.

We are going on our 1st ever Disney cruise in January. It is the kids first cruise. In April our neighbors went and I talked it up like you wouldn't believe. My kids kept talking about how lucky those kids were and I showed them the DCL DVD then so they could see where their friends were. It was NOT evil. I am so glad I did that because now they know exactly what the Disney Cruise is all about. They love watching the DVD and asking our friends questions about their trip.
Now, on Christmas morning when they do their scavenger hunt for puzzle pieces and put together a picture of the Magic, they will be so excited!!!
You are not evil, you are smart!!!!

You have no idea! This kid has been able to read since he was 2 years old! (We passed a hair salon once and he blurted out "STATUS" ~pronounced it correctly~, I turned around, sure enough the salon was called STATUS. Bizarre! ;) )

Anyway, we're aren't able to spell out anything around him, because he'll figure it out.

I might be able to use that skill to our advantage though in figuring out the surprise :teeth: Don't worry, the closer we get, the more I'll be bugging you all for suggestions on how to do it!

I must respectfully disagree with surprising the kids about going on a cruise. Our upcoming in Nov. will be our 4th and we have booked each one about 2 years in advance. As soon as we get our confirmation we make calendars with a countdown # of days left and have the kids mark off the days. We spend a lot of fun time talking about and planning everything about the cruise. I can assure you that the anticipation is half the fun and the pleasure that you will get when you surprise the kids will be nothing to the pleasure you get by see your kids faces everytime they think about or plan how great a time you will have on the cruise. Only my opinion but it works for us.

You know when his friend comes home that he will hear all about it and then he'll really want to go! By the way your the good kind of evil!!!

HowardK,

I don't think anyone is saying it's better to surprise the kids and that you shouldn't tell them in advance...ever. It really depends on the kids, I think. How old are they, do they have a grasp of time (my son thinks waiting a week for something is torture, because he doesn't truly grasp the concept of a week, just the wait)

I certainly will plan some anticipation....just not so long that it is all-consuming (for him anyway, I'm a lost cause)

I just hope that I can hold out until May.

Yippity, skippity hoo ha hey!

DOnt feel bad. My kids had no idea that we are going in Nov until yesterday. Well DH and I went on the WOnder 09-19 and left the kids home! I kept saying " Im going on a cr-uise and your not coming....nah nah na na" THen I would say, I will miss ya, but not enough to take you with me! So when we finally told them upon returing home, they were so happy and couldnt believe I was teasing them! LOL They got a kick out of it:cool:

I just did it to my kids last month. It was so much fun. I woke them up at 3 am and told them to get dressed because we're going to Disney World. The only reason they believed me is because we had the video camera on them. Then after we got to Disney, we woke up the next morning and told them we had to go back to the airport to drop off the rental car (we met other family members down there). Well, we kept on driving and they were whining, "When are we going to get there". I had to make the 10 year old look out the windows of the car for imaginary alligators on the sides of road to avoid her seeing the "port canveral' signs. Well, when we crossed over the bridge and saw the SHIP IN THE DISTANCE.... THE SCREAMING BEGAN. THEY WERE SOOOOOOO EXCITED.
DO IT DO IT DO IT.
The first time I ever suprised them with a Disney Vacation was one of the BEST days of my entire life. My then 7 year old was crying tears of joy!!!!!

I agree!! I agree!! Surprise them and make sure you have the video camera going when you do!!

For my son's 6th birthday I had a little stuffed Mickey sent to him from Mickey (the Disney Store wrapped it and put a card in it from Mickey!) The card said..."Ryan I miss you! I just sent your mom and dad tickets for all of you to come visit me!" The look on his face was priceless. I said, "Ry..we're going to Disney!!" THEN since we were staying at the AKL Concierge the CM who had helped me make my PS's knew that it was Ryan's b'day, knew he was a big Mickey fan...he CALLED Ryan that day!! I put him on speaker phone and video'd that too!! My son was speechless. It was the best surprise!!

We're leaving in three weeks now for the MNSSHP, Halloween weekend. I have not told the boys yet. We're going to pick them up from school and drive right to the airport!! I can't wait to see their faces!!

Last night we were watching the Food Network special on Disney World. At the end Ryan said "I miss Disney." I could barely keep myself from telling them!!!
