I'm thinking of asking DB if he would consider doing a quick trip to the Land next weekend...yes, LABOR DAY weekend! Would this be a suicidal act?

Some Factors:

We'd have 3 day hoppers, with either 1 full day and 2 half days, or 2 full days and 1 half day. (these being Friday-Sunday)

I'd want this to be as special as possible for him, by which I mean I don't want his first impression of Disney trips (he's never been to ANY Disney park!) to be that of one sardine in a can of many.

I've been three times since 2009, and feel pretty confident in my planning abilities, know my way around the parks well, etc.

No need for any tours, character meals, etc. This would just be a play-it-by-ear kind of visit. Eat where we want when we're hungry, etc.

I'd die if I didn't see the fireworks, so that's essential. And I think he would like Fantasmic. Not big on seeing WoC again. Would like to catch a parade.

While meeting characters is important to me, it won't be to him. If I can catch a few mains and maybe a princess or two, or the pooh pals, i'll be good.

Our main focuses would be A) rides, and B) having a nice time together. This would be our first real trip anywhere together.

As far as crowd levels, I have been in the parks for crowded (to me) Memorial Weekend 09, dead crowds in November of 10, and moderate crowds in October last year. How would this holiday weekend generally compare?

So, all factors accounted for...would this be impossible, doable but difficult, or no big deal?

I say give it a try. Both SoCal APs AND Deluxe are blocked for Saturday and Sunday so you won't have to deal with those crowds. The parks haven't been as busy as they've expected this summer. If you're willing to go with the flow and just be casual about it, I think you'll have a good time. There will certainly be people in the parks but I would guess reasonable wait times for most rides.

I think it's a great idea!! Crowds or not you will still have fun and get to enjoy the parks in full swing as opposed to the following week when things start closing for referb and the off season. The parks will be open later too.

No big crowds UNLESS you take into account that it is the Disneyland 1/2 marathon weekend with the expo starting on friday, the 5K on sat and the 1/2 marathon on sunday.

So if you don't mind sharing the parks with and additional few thousand people their for the races it should be a piece of cake.

It'll probably be crowded, but manageable if you make good use of Fastpasses. Another suggestion - see if there are any seats available for Fantasmic premium seating. It's a long shot, but it would give you a nearly unobstructed view of the show without camping out all day. If you aren't worried about seeing the castle projections, you could stay in your seat to watch the fireworks after the show (if you get tickets to the first showing of F!).

We are as crazy as you are, heading out next week for Labor day weekend. DIL running the 1/2, time with grandkids, and fun fun fun at DL and DCA. I expect it will be crowded, but that is part of the fun! Hope you have a great trip!

I was there last year for the weekend and the race. We had a very nice time by utilizing fast pass and being there for rope drop. Crowds picked up Sunday afternoon, but were reasonable Friday and Saturday. On Monday, the SoCal Ap was unblocked and that was the busiest day.
