My will be 3 yr. old and I are booked to set sail on the Disney wish on October 31 for 4 night cruise. We are currently booked in an ocean view room on deck 2 midship and I’m trying to figure out if I should upgrade us to verandah room that likely will be either forward or aft.

pros to ocean view:
  • Saves us 300ish dollars
  • I won’t have to worry about DD climbing on a balcony or throwing things over the balcony
  • It’s midship and I have gotten sea sick on small boats (but not cruises but we’ve always stayed midship) and I have no idea how
  • I don’t plan on spending much time in our room (but also don’t plan on getting off ship except at castaway cay
cons to ocean view:
  • No verandah
  • Low deck and we likely will spend most our time at the pools and eating
  • on same deck as kids club so potentially loud
Pros to verandah:
  • When staying at disney hotel, my daughter and I love sitting on the balcony and my daughter loves playing with her toys on a balcony… but I have had to tell her a couple times no climbing and not to hang toys over the side of the balcony
  • Can have private time of just sitting in fresh air watching the waves with my daughter
  • On a higher floor and closer to where we likely will be spending our time.
Cons to verandah:
  • $300 more and DH will not be happy about it (but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him lol and I probably wouldn’t tell him till much later) and that is money I could use on souvenirs
  • Room would be either forward or aft and idk how the movement with those rooms would affect us
I feel like I need to make this decision ASAP before prices go up but I keep going back and forth on what to do and what is best for me. I’ve never cruised with only a window. I’ve always either had verandah or inside stateroom. In the past, I don’t feel like I spent a lot of time on the verandah…mainly at night or early in the morning when waiting for things to open. DD likely won’t take naps nor will she go to bed early because on vacation she is crazy and continues going until I force her to go to sleep so won’t need a space to hang out while she sleeps but she does wake up super early. Ugh Idk if it’s worth the extra money or if I should put the money to something else and not piss of DH by spending too much money (full disclosure, I’m not really worried if he gets mad)

So far we have only stayed in Oceanview rooms on deck 2 on the Magic and Wonder. Giant porthole, tons of natural light. Easy access to elevators/stairs. For the Wish, theaters are on decks 3/4, restaurants on 3/4/5. Midship and low shouldn't have any movement. The way the rooms are placed, you shouldn't hear much noise from the clubs, we've walked by them on other ships and don't hear anything. Personally, I'd be anxious with a 3 yr old on the balcony, especially if she's a climber, and if she accidentally drops a toy over the balcony, she'll never see it again...at least on land you can usually retrieve something that was dropped over a balcony. There should be plenty of places to get fresh air outside (including deck 4 promenade) and if you've been fine in an inside room, you should be good with an ocean view.

that’s what I keep telling myself (although wasn’t a fan of inside cause I felt like I slept too much) but I keep second guessing myself. A verandah would be nice and so would being closer to things but I don’t think we will be in the room much so idk if it justifies spending another 300 dollars. I’m so indecisive at the moment

We have stayed in everything from the cheapest inside to a 1BR concierge suite. Turned out our cruise was just as enjoyable no matter what we chose. When we had a verandah, we used it a lot. When we didn't, we hung out on deck more. When my kids were that age, a verandah scared me (probably unreasonably, but until my youngest was old enough to understand the risk, I wasn't getting a verandah. Unless you're planning to use the verandah a lot, I wouldn't spend the extra cash on it. I would pay extra to get ocean view though--the natural light is so nice and your daughter will probably love it.

I would stick with the Oceanview. Since it is the Wish you will probably be out of the room more to experience all the new things. We sailed in verandah's on our first 2 cruises, but choose an Oceanview or Inside room now. The last time I was in a balcony room I felt like I had to spend time out on it, but I really wanted to be out doing things on the ship.

I would stick with the ocean view. Especially if the little one is prone to climbing or sticking things over the railing. You will be absolutely miserable as will she if the favorite toy ends up over the railing into the abyss.

The poll is split evenly which is as helpful as my head has been about changing rooms. In the end, I’ve decided to upgrade to a verandah room. I didn’t go as high on the floors as I wanted cause I chose to go with a mid ship verandah, which was a bit pricier than aft/forward and the higher floors were pricier too. In the end, it’s not a whole lot of savings by doing a lower floor but it’s still a little bit.

ultimately, I decided to upgrade because of all the unknowns. Idk what my kid will be like in October given she is so young and changing constantly. So, while she usually doesn’t nap when at WDW in the past, lately at home she has needed a nap or she melts done which means I may be in the room more than I expect. I also don’t know if she will be potty trained or not which may limit some of the activities we can do. I also know she currently wakes up early and having an outside place to hangout before fully waking up and getting dressed was a positive for me. And lastly, with covid, idk what rules will be in place regarding masking, social distancing, what is open/closed for when we go in October. I’m hoping most (if not all) covid rules will be a thing of the past in October but it may not be and having our own outside space makes me feel like we have more options for how to handle any rules that might be in place.

this also may be the last vacation DD and I do solo. I guess that is also making me feel like going big with the vacation (within reason and within what we can afford).

Have an amazing time!
I am doing veranda this summer for many reasons. One of the big ones is who knows what will happen. I want my own place I can escape to outside, just in case.

Another problem with her playing on the Veranda is the ocean salt spray that you can encounter, it can end up all over her and the toys. Our glass in the railing was covered this past week,

Verandah, easy, especially with a little one. Assuming she's going to go to bed earlier than you, it gives you somewhere to be and something to do when she's asleep and you're not.

I changed my vote from ocean view to veranda after reading your second post about her getting up early and you wanting a place to relax and wake up. I also think it’s worth the $300 for your peace of mind because it sounds like you may be fine with the ocean view but even if you don’t use the veranda a ton, it sounds like you want to know you can. Have fun!

I changed my vote too after reading more about you. Having a verandah option is going to be nice. ENJOY!!

Thanks everyone! We are excited. On vacation, she tends to stay up as late as me but I think it will be great for mornings and all the unknowns. I plan to order her fruit and chocolate milk every morning from room service to get the day started since fruit and chocolate milk is how she starts the day at home.

I figure if I was going to upgrade now was the time to do it before prices got any higher

You will have a mix if opinions. I prefer Oceanview over Verandah
