A friend whose family travels with us to Disney and I were having this discussion ...
When we go to Disney (or any other vacation for that matter), we get up EARLY, run ourselves ragged, and don't get back to the resort until LATE at night ... open the park/close the park kind of people... and this continues the whole trip.

We've been talking to some other people .. friends who recently went to WDW, friends who are going soon, and friends who are going with us ... and none of them seem to have this same vacation "ethic".

So my friend and I were wondering "Is it just us? What is wrong with us? are we normal?" ... then realized maybe we are just cheap ... want to get the most for our money ?

LOL reading this post reminded me of my family exactly. We are open and close the park kind of people too. On our last trip we did 4 days of 14-17 hour park days. This trip we are thinking of slowing it down a bit because we were not the happiest people on earth by the 3rd day of our trip :P and with a 7 year old it's a lot harder. I think if you can manage its my favorite strategy for parks.
I don't think you're cheap :goodvibes Maybe you're just like us. We can't stand the thought that there are magical things happening and we are sitting in a bedroom doing nothing. That's what all the other nights if the year are for :P

Sounds like vacationing with my parents. :goodvibes I have learned to slow down since vacationing with my DH and boys.

Too much to see and do to sleep. That's what other vacations are for. I definitely need a week to recover from my Disney vacations. When our 3 boys were younger, they nicknamed me "drill sergeant". Our last trip we had adjoining rooms at Pop and they were 13, 16 and 20. They slept in and would meet up with dh & me by lunchtime. Whatever, I'm there to fill everyday with as much as possible!!!

I used to be that way, but after 10 years, I take a break in the afternoon.

This is me exactly!! When my mom and I went to Disney we were so exhausted when we got home, that we left the luggage in the living room and went straight to bed!! Lol.

My husband just booked an extra day off at home for after our trip to "re-coup" ;).

We do all our vacations this way no matter the destination. We like to research, explore, sightsee and discover local things as best we can with the time we have. Go go go!

I'm the same way, but we've also only gone on shorter trips so far. I just hate the idea that I might not be getting as much out of my trip as I can. I think for me, it honestly might be because I'm so cheap. If I'm paying for it, I'm going to make it way more than worth it! But I know we definitely need to try to slow down. We are trying to do longer trips so we don't feel as pressured to be runnnnning for so many hours of the day and are actually able to relax and not need a vacation after our vacation!

For me it depends. I use to be a rope drop to close person. Didn't want to miss anything or waste time in the room.

Now, I switch it up on occasion, depending on who I go with. I still like to be at rope drop. But then I can usually get a lot done by lunch. So I may go back to the resort and hit the pool or take a quick nap. After dinner, I head back to a park and usually close it.

I also tend to go kamikaze style on trips other than WDW. I'll research everything I want to see and do and then go do it. Sometimes that involves just lying on the beach and enjoying the sun, surf and sand.

I've also tried to plan my trips so I get back home on a Wed. night. I make sure to take off work Thurs. & Fri. so I have a 4 day weekend to recuperate, before getting back to the daily grind.

We have to go, go, go too!

As DH tells people, if we wanted to sit around all day we could have stayed at home for alot less money!

with that said, our next trip is the total opposite. We shall see how that goes

Nailed it ;)

I have friends who do it that way, but I don't. I need breaks and I like spending time in the resort, shopping, and enjoying that part of the vacation, too. I get sensory overload if I try to kamikaze it. But since I've been to the parks more times than I can even count up, I'm sure that factors in!!! I never feel like I'm missing something since I know I'll be back soon.

Us too. Love to see new things and places.

I think it also makes a difference e depending upon how long your trip is. We like to see and do it all too, but we go for at least 10 or 11 days so we can have time to just relax and chill too.

If we were only going for 4-5 days, that would be totally different.

Getting the most out of vacation is an individual thing. My primary goal on our next vacation is to suck out all the joy in time spent with my mom and sister. Disney is just our happy place to do it. :)

We will be at rope drop and when mom gets tired we will leave. We'd all really like to see msep and immunisations if possible.

Eta: we used to kamikaze. And if that is your happy place go for it!!

We are the total opposite. We run ourselves ragged every other day, vacation for us is taking it at a leisurely pace.

I don't think there is any thing as a "normal" vacation.

Sorry but what you described for my family is not a vacation. My family would seriously revolt if we had to vacation like that.

I'm like luvmy3. My real life is hetic, run run run, get up early. Why on earth would I want to do that on vacation. I'm up at 4:45 every day for work.

People always say "you can sit down at home" but the truth is I don't sit down at home.

This was my day yesterday and it's a typical day.

4:45 get up for work
5:30-7:00 walk dog, feed dog, take some thing out of freezer for dinner, check in with kids
7-4:30 work (ridiculously busy)
5:00 head to the bank to see financial planner.
6:30 head home, cook dinner, clean,
9:00 read mail, check voice mail, get back to phone messages.
10:30 bed. repeat next day.

some where between there I squeeze in grocery shopping, maybe getting hair done, yard work. don't get me started when I had kids in school who had after school activities

I admire folks who say they get to relax at home.

No, we aren't open to close type of people. That is why I am glad Disney is cheaper the more days you go.

We can feel like we can take it a little easier.
