For anyone who has ever gone to the Crystal Palace for character breakfast- you know how the buffet is set up.

Do you stay behind people at the cold buffet if you are only getting a hot item? or vise versa?

On our last trip I had this man who started making comments behind me and my DD10 because we went straight up to the hot item line and didn't get behind him in the cold section.

He was saying things like people don't know how to behave, etc.

I finally turned around and told him to go ahead of us b/c he obviously had a problem with us. He refused. Tell me if I am wrong for not starting at the cold buffet before going to the hot items.

When we got back to the table, my dh wanted me to point the man out so he could have a word with him. I told him not to worry this man apparently was having an awful trip anyway and was getting what he deserved.

Why would I stand behind someone at the cold buffet if all I want is the hot items?

After this though.... I'll be asking the people dishing up the cold items if they'd mind if I jump ahead of them to the hot items.

And here I always thought that there would be plenty for everyone.........

I'd chalk that one up as a person who doesnt know how to relax on vacation. I'm not one to eat the rabbit food at a buffet and never wait behind them. if the line stretches to the hot food I will wait behind the rabbits. However, if its spaced out, I dont see the big deal.

As one who has visited a number of buffets, I would agree that it's ok to cut in front of someone to take just one item, or to pass by a section you don't want anything from. If you're polite about it, no biggie:D

i definently agree if the line had extended, we would have waited.

Which there was a line like that the 1st time we went up.

This time it was only him and us.

That was the main reason we went back at that time.

Okay, so how is a buffet line handled politely? Do you get in the back of the line and just take what you want as you pass by it? Or do you go directly to the item you wish and just say excuse me and step in? I have always waited in the line, but if it's acceptable to just excuse yourself in order to get that helping of scrambled eggs, then I'm done with all that time standing line, waiting for people to pick thru the food!!! I'm just really curious as to how to handle it. Example...

I'm going to get my 'first' plate of food. Don't know what is being offered at what spot. So, do I get in the line and just work my way down to the end...or....check it all out and then just step up to the spot where my choice is?

I usually get my salad and go back to the table and eat it. Then I go up and get my dinner. I'm certainly not going to wait in the salad line again. I think most folks accept that. If someone is waiting behind me and not getting anything, I have no problem telling them they should go around me if I'm holding them up. As for a long line....obviously, I stay seated until the line thins out. I agree, some folks just don't know how to have a relaxing time....aren't we glad he wasn't with us or part of your group?

Oh man I can't believe he was so rude to you. It's not like you pushed him over to get to the food. Maybe you should have! Sorry he was so rude to you.

This post gave me a giggle.

People are too uptight!

Here is my take on it. If there is a solid moving line from one end of the buffet to the other than wait at the end of the line.

But (like in this case) if the buffet is almost empty and you are not having to push between people ... then just go right to what you want.

That man needed a midol.

I agree with you!!

We always schedule our Crystal Palace breakfast for the first seating so it's never all that busy yet but we must do exactly what you do.

Unless the place was just mobbed and there appeared to be one, continuous line that started at the beginning and worked consistantly through to the end (have yet to see that at any WDW buffet that I have visited) I agree that you only need to wait in line for the section that are interested in. In other words if there were one or two people at the hot food section I would get behind them and wait my turn but why would you wait behind people for things you aren't even interested in???

I had something similar happen at Boma on our last trip. There was no one at the soup section but there was one man at the pod to the right of the soups in the process of putting food on his plate. I always think Boma is kind of confusing because there isn't an appearant "starting" pod to begin with but appearantly this man thought that the starting pod should have been the one on the far right and then everyone should work their way around to the left. I walked directly to the soup pod. My fianace was behind me and then these three guys came up and got in line behind us. The other man gave me this very annoyed look and purposely shoved very close to me trying to imply that I had somehow "cut" in front of him. The guys that were behind my fianace appearantly noticed (and may have been a bit tipsy) and yelled to the annoyed man that the line was behind them. He was very embarassed!!

Some people are just disagreeable. This year while in line at AK for the dino twist ride, I bumped a lady with my camera (a small 35 m weighs nothing... I had the shoulder strap over my shoudler) and apologized to her. She said "why apologize now you've been doing it since we got in line!" I said I'm sorry I didn't realize I had bumped you before. She said you and your daughter who actually leaned on me! My DD normally isn't the kind to hang. So I apologized for her. She kept going on and on, I said she's a kid, if she did it, it wasn't on purpose. She said I have a 4 yr old too and you have to continually watch them (she looked to be in her 50's). When the guy asked how many and we said 3 and she was one (imagine that!!!) She almost got on with us. DH told the couple in back of us to go on ahead. We both thought at first she was just teasing. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten hit with a backpack, stroller, I even had my foot run over by a wheelchair! I would never even think someone would be doing it on purpose. Ruined the ride for me, I couldn't get that out of my mind. She certainly did not have a smile in her heart. She was simply hateful.

Disney can bring out the magic in people, can't it?

This was probably some poor soul who didn't make priority seatings and waited two hours to get to that buffet (and every other meal at WDW).

Edquitte in a buffet line is truncated. As long as you're not diving in ahead of the person, knocking the serving spoon out of their hands I think you are just fine. He obvously has not been to a disney buffet at the same time as a high school class trip. That's a nut house.

You should have taken Pooh over to that guy's table, he obviously need a hug or something.

I like the set up at Boma since there is not one buffet line. There are the individual pods to deal with, but at least nobody expects a person to start at one end or the other of the whole buffet.

T&B

My general rule for a buffet is that each opportunity to take a plate represents the beginning of a new line. Is this reasonable or have I been cutting in line for years?

Melissa

thanks for the responses everyone!!!

i AGREE if there is a line get to the end.

if not, get what you want!!

I think this guy would have been miserable no matter what happened!!

I am never unhappy in DW!!!

This is one reason why we avoid "get your own food" buffets. We prefer family style service at an all you can eat place. I hate standing in line for food and I often feel wierd about going to the middle of the buffet to get what I want if it is crowded. I always wonder if someone thinks I am butting in line.

I like Melissa's idea - each new set of plates is the start of a new line. I guess I've been thinking that way all along, and didn't even know it....but as soon as I read it, I thought "well - yea! that's what I do."

Maddle

I agree with Maddle and Melissa. If there is a different set of plates at the hot buffet, then you can form a new line. And that is the way the Crystal Palace is set up. We were just there last week for Lunch. Had the 11:30 seating and everyone was waiting in the cold buffet line (really long line!). Well my son and I just went right past and onto the hot buffet - I can eat a cold cut sandwich at home! I got back to the table and there were some restaurant CM's looking at the line. They were commenting to each other that the next seating was going to be bad if people didn't start using a separtate line for hot and cold food. There was even a CM at the friont trying to tell people to go around the cold buffet - but people just stood in line. I guess they all wanted sandwiches!

I know what not to do at a buffet. I was at the CP last week. I was in the cold food line patiently waiting for someone to make her PB&J sandwhich so that I could make one for DD. Well no sooner did the girl put the spoon down then some very rude lady butted in front of me and said Excuse me but I just want to get a PB&J. With that I told her that I was too waiting to do and she could just go to the back of the line. She then tried to get behind me and the man behind me informed her that he too was for the cold section and to beat it. She was very angry but too bad. You do not butt in front of anyone in a line that you want something from. I mean if you want even one thing from the cold line then go to the end of that line and wait. If you want something from the hot line then go to that line and wait. This also happened in the hot line. I was just getting ready to get something and someone said they just wanted one thing. Well so did I. I really wish some folks would just learn some manners and realize that the world does not revolve around them.
