My family just don't like turkey, so we've always had Chinese roast duck every year for Thanksgiving. I want to try something different this year, what are your favorite alternatives to roast turkey for Thanksgiving?

Chinese roast duck? That sounds exotic! I have never had duck.

You can have lamb, standing rib roast, tenderloin, roast chicken, or even some fancy fish. One day I am going to buy and make Chilean Sea Bass.;)

One side of my family is vegetarian, so they always have a big pasta/italian spread. Last year they had stuffed shells, veggie lasagna, butternut squash ravioli etc. salad fresh baked breads etc . My in laws usually have a baked Ham.

i believe that peking duck is what you are trying to think of.

My late DH used to make a killer roast beef for Christmas or New Year's.. Everyone raved about it... I've tried to duplicate it, but can't..:(

DH's family always used to have cornish game hen with a terriaki glaze, it's really yummy. I'v made it a couple of times for T-day and have thought about doing it this year, it's been a while.

Not quite, Peking duck is the kind with the extra crispy skin and it is served with little steamed buns, scallions and hoisin sauce. We usually get the Hong Kong style roast duck from Chinese deli places, the kind you see hanging on a hook with the gruesome looking head still attached. These, you get it chopped up into small chunks and eat the skin and meat right off the bones, as you would with fried chicken. The skin is not as crispy as Peking duck, but the meat is very flavorful and tender.

I like the suggestions so far, especially the standing rib roast. I Googled it and it looks like the prime rib that I get in restaurants, is it the same thing with different names? How hard is it to prepare and cook for a novice cook? I consider Hamburger Helper to be pretty complicated and too much work :lmao:

Goose...If your family like duck, you would like goose. My friend stuffs the goose with Chinese sticky rice....yumm:thumbsup2

Yes, as Deb said, honey glazed spiral ham. A favorite of many folks for the holidays.

herc

We are thinking of doing a standing rib roast as well. And its on sale this week at Winn Dixie. My niece was disappointed that we weren't having turkey so she will probably get a cornish hen while we are feasting on the rib roast!! YUM

All I can think of is "Chinese turkey" like on Christmas Story, with the head still attached. "It's smiling at me."

Alot of major grocery store chains(not wal-mart) have pre-cooked meals like ham, turckey or prime rib with all the trimmings. You gotta pre-order them a week ahead of time for pick up the day before or day of.I prefer the day before!!:thumbsup2

I would with honey spiral ham if don't want Turkey.

Or could a hen. That what I am doing if don't find a cheap Turkey.

No one in the family likes Turkey so we have a New England Clam bake (Lobsters, clams, mussels, corn on the cob, boiled potatoes, chowder). For dessert we have Indian Pudding. It's not "traditional" but feels like Thanksgiving to us :)

Actually, you may be much more "authentic".

The first Thansgiving actually included lobster, fish (bass and cod) and clams, as well as corn meal, roasted venison, stewed or boiled wild fowl, stew of dried fruits and perhaps pumpkin, one or two boiled vegetables and only water to drink.
