Our family has cruised a lot but this will be our first DCL. It is a belated (due to CV) 2020 HS graduation gift for my Disney-loving daughter #2. She's moving out this summer so this cruise and family time will be extra special.

Meanwhile, daughter #3 was chosen for a very exclusive advanced STEM summer intensive session. It was based on her state scores and recs from her teachers. To be chosen is quite an honor.

The problem? We took a gamble (YES, WE KNEW IT WAS A GAMBLE) and booked the non-refundable OV guarantee room. We have never, ever booked that way on any other line (of course, the first time we did it would be the time it might bite us in the behinds). We did buy insurance but, and I say this as a wife who adores her husband, he screwed up and didn't buy the 'all cause' insurance (even after asking him to make sure it covered anything). It only protects against illness and combat, etc. We waffled back and forth about eating the money so daughter #3 could attend the program but then daughter #2 would get screwed with her HS gift and.....yada yada yada. We were so in the weeds we didn't even realize that the cruise was the second week of the 3 week intensive course and we could send her to the first and 3rd weeks with a nice cruise-break in the middle. I had to change flights to get the latest one out on Friday so she would miss as little on that day as possible. But we made it work.

I post this because I"m sure there are those on here that can relate to the 48 hrs of mental gymnastics of going back and forth between doing what was best for #3 vs what was promised for #2. We didn't even see the solution in front of our face. Is it perfect? No. Daughter #3 wants to be a vet and (of course) animal biology is the second week of the course. BUT, I have a friend who's daughter just graduated vet school who would be more than happy to sit with her or even become a mentor to her.

So, is there a morale to the story? Sometimes gambles pay off and sometimes they don't. Sometimes you have to choose the best for one child over another. And finally, if you give your husband specific instructions on what to purchase, it is probably better to just go ahead and do it yourself. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

My curiosity - Could you have just taken the grad daughter on the cruise? Let #3 participate in her entire course? I know, sometimes situations dictate our choices.

I'm shocked that she's allowed to miss the middle week of the course, to be honest. Or that she wants to given that THAT is her area of interest.

She’s 12 and both her father and I are in the medical research field. So, opportunities for exposure in biology, anatomy, medicine, clinical trials, research etc will probably come up just through people we know. Also, she and older sister are super close and she’s feeling very sad about her moving out. So, this is the best compromise we could come up with.

Honestly I’d have her do one or the other. It sounds like there are others who would love to be chosen to participate in all 3 weeks. If she was a high school student ready to start college applications I’d lean towards the program (although I’m not sure how much pay to play programs count for rigor, the fact that it’s competitive to get in probably helps), but this won‘t even be on her applications.
