Hi there. I have a son who has a milk allergy(specifically casein). He drinks almond milk and would really like to enjoy milkshakes with the rest of us at whispering canyon and sci fi. Would they be able to make them with almond milk if requested? I know almond milk is on property now through many locations in WDW.

I am allergic to dairy, soy and just don't do well with rice so almond milk is my go-to. However, in my 15+ meals at WDW in 2012 and 2013, I could never find any restaurant that used almond milk. At Sci-Fi last September, they made my son (also dairy free) and I AMAZING milkshakes with SO Coconut Brand milk/ice cream. At that time, I hadn't heard of any other chefs using that but over in the DISabilities forum (great place to get allergy info), I read that they are serving it in more places now. If soy, rice or coconut milks are an option for your son, he should have no problem finding dairy free milk shake options! Hope that helps :)

Most milkshakes are made with Ice cream which is blended with a little milk to make the shake texture.
I don't expect you can make ice cream with almond milk, so I guess the previous answer of a coconut cream is a better option.

The milkshakes at Whispering Canyon are a kin to a McDonald's milkshake - the very thick kind that comes pre-made out of a machine. They add the appropriate syrup to the shake after it comes out of the machine to make it whatever flavor you order. Because of this, I highly doubt they could accommodate any allergies.

I do believe the ones at Sci Fi are your normal milkshakes made by hand, so they may have an alternative instead of milk. Its worth asking.

You can always email special diets and see how they can accomodate you. Let them know your son's allergy and ask if they can accomodate a dairy free milkshake request at the restaurants you want. Their email is specialdiets@disneyworld.com In my experience, they take about a week to get back to you.

They might be able to make a dairy free option, but it might not be made with almond milk. On the WDW gluten/dairy free allergy sheets (the one I have is from June of this year), they only list Silk soy milk as WC's milk alternative. Their dairy free icecream options are Rice Dream and Tofutti. Sci-Fi lists the same nondairy icecream and soy milk as well as Pacific Natural rice milk.

They most likely have an alternative, however it may be soy milk or rice milk and not almond milk.

We have had almond milk at Boma (Animal Kingdom Lodge) way back in 2007 time period. We preferred Rice milk back then, but they brought us almond. I have not seen it elsewhere. We do see Rice Dream and Toffutti as options at many main places (for dairy free alternative).

I'm puzzled. If your son has an allergy to the milk protein casein, how can he have ice cream? Edy's Ice Cream, most often seen at WDW, lists their first ingredient as skim milk and second ingredient as cream. I believe Sci-Fi Dine-In hand-makes their milk shakes, but WCC uses a pre-made mix and adds flavors to individual orders.

Sci Fi had dairy free ice cream when we were there. Most places do. They didn't offer us any options other than ice cream in a glass (no shakes) but perhaps had we requested it, they would do that. Let us know! We'll be going back soon :) (loved Sci Fi)

He can have small amounts of ice cream, something about the way it's broken down in the production process is how it was explained to me by the doctor. It's the actual milk that would make him sick and have diarrhea. Fortunately his allergy is not as severe as when he was first diagnosed at 16 months, he is 8 now and has outgrown it a bit as they said he may. We learned the hard way one year at the Christmas party and assumed the hot cocoa was made with water and didn't think about it. Poor kid was sick that night.

Thanks for the info! He drinks coconut milk, on occasion too and doesn't mind that so I will call and flag our ressie to accommodate. He will be excited!

Mine drink almond milk too. Last time we went, we had to take almond milk ourselves (we got the individual serving size so we take it into the parks). I'm so glad to hear that it is available in some places. I don't think they can do an almond milk milkshake and don't forget the ice cream will likely be cow's milk. Our daughter is beginning to out-grow her allergy so sometime she can have a little bit of ice cream without trouble but not a lot. Our son can't have any.

That is great to hear!

I know that almond milk ice cream exists because I buy it and eat it at home. However, I don't believe Disney offers it, just Tofutti and rice dream as previously mentioned.

I do know that Sci-Fi can make a shake using non dairy products, and that you can get root beer floats and the like at the Magic Kingdom. It never hurts to just ask; maybe someday soon Disney will catch on to the increasing popularity of almond milk and start offering that too!

I have a dairy allergy and while I prefer almond milk, soy milk is what's on property right now (at least my options when I was there in May). I can confirm 50's Prime Time and Sci-Fi have both made me dairy-free milkshakes with soy milk and tofutti. At sci-fi I actually had a chocolate/strawberry dairy-free milkshake and it was EXCELLENT. Don't hesitate to ask anywhere!! I will be in the World in a week so I can confirm whether or not almond milk is on property. Hope that helps!
