My 11 year old son had an allergic reaction to something, involving itching, rash and coughing. We have a doctor's appt. scheduled, but I am wondering if the only way to figure out what caused it is the test where they prick the skin. It isn't a big deal, and he would do fine, just curious.

Most likely they will do the scratch tests to find out the allergens. If it is food related, you can actually request a blood panel too if that is an option. The scratch tests are not that bad, just itchy :)
Good luck, I hope you find what's bothering him! Allergies are not fun to deal with.

Thanks. It was so scary. We were in the middle of the desert when it happened. Luckily I always have an antihistimine with me. I had tucked it in at the last minute. But I was so scared. Not only was there not a hospital anywhere nearby, but we didn't even have phone coverage.

Scratch tests and blood tests as the poster above me stated. My doctor will often do a combo of both.
