What does Ohana do for people with peanut allergies? Was just reading menu on allears and saw that the noodles are cooked in peanut oil. Anyone had experience with a peanut allergy being accommodated at Ohana?

Thanks!

I don't have experience with a peanut allergy at Ohana, but my wife has a soybean allergy and cannot have some of the food at Ohana. Instead, they create a special plated dish for her. She loves it and Ohana remains one of our must-do restaurants.

Attach a note to your ADR and make sure the note is there when you check in. The person seating you will put a laminated flower on your table as a reminder for your server. A chef will come to your table to discuss your options with you. You'll also be asked if you want the sauces brought out to the table for the other guests in your party or if it should be left off the table entirely due to cross contamination concerns (there's a peanut sauce). The chef will prepare yummy allergy safe food for you. The chefs at 'Ohana are wonderful.

The people in my party can't have the noodles due to other allergies so I don't know if they can make the noodles safe or not. You will definitely get safe food though. The ONLY reason I ever caution people with peanut allergies about 'Ohana is that the restaurant encourages kids to get up and participate in activities and you never know if sticky little fingers have peanut sauce on them or not so things like back of chairs, walls, the limbo bar, etc could have traces of peanut. Depending on the severity of the allergy this may or may not be a concern but I like to inform people so they can make that kind of decision for themselves.

Our son has a peanut allergy and they were more than accommodating.

I don't remember having to stay away from the noodles, but it has been a couple of years. He couldn't eat the bread or bread pudding at dessert not because it contained any peanuts, it just comes from Disneys central bakery and they can't guarantee that there wasn't any cross contamination.

The chef came out at the beginning to go over everything, and at the end came back with a very special dessert for DS. It was a huge banana, ice cream and brownie chocolate covered dessert that was fantastic.

our son also has peanut/tree nut allergies and we have been to 'Ohana for dinner in Jan '11 and Aug '10 and other than the peanut sauce (which we opted to skip for the entire table) we were not cautioned about the food... i know he ate the noodles and was fine... where did you get the info that they are cooked in peanut oil? also he was able to eat the ice cream and caramel sauce and bananas... so dessert was not an issue...

We have eaten at Ohana three times in the past few years and it is a favorite for all of us! I also do not remember being told about the noodles. I'm pretty sure DD even ate them! I do remember being asked if we wanted the peanut sauce at the table and we declined, and DD was brought a brownie sundae instead of the bread pudding dessert. I have my travel agent calling into the resaturant to find out about the noodles. I'm wondering if the info on allears is either old, or if this is a recent change in the menu? Disney is excellent in dealing with food allergies. We were very comfortable having DD eat in all the restaurants.

I was told that peanut oil is so refined that it does not have the allergen that agrivates a peanut allergy.

(I've never tested it, but this is what I was told by a mom whose kid I watch who has a severe peanut allergy. Like the dust from someone cracking peanuts open at a baseball game, 2 rows in front of us, caused a skin rash.)

That is supposed to be the case.

My allergist said that it is not supposed to have any of the allergen left but it is still a small possibility if it is not refined properly. if it is cold pressed and not refined peanut oil it can be extremely dangerous for people with penaut allergies. She said that you never really know the degree of processing so she advises to completely avoid it.

She said it's one of those things that allergists differ in opinion on and the opinion differs depending on the sensitivity of the individual. She usually gives parents her opinion (shes a ped. allergist) but tells them it's their choice if they want to chance it.

We ate at 'Ohana back in August w/DD5 who is peanut and tree nut allergic. I think this was just before they changed the standard noodle dish served. When we dined there, they just didn't give us the peanut sauce and they felt the bread was too great a risk. I saw a pp note that the oil shouldn't trigger an allergic reaction- and I've seen this before with places like Chik Fil A where the peanut oil is cooked at such a hot temp that it neutralizes the offending protein that would normally cause the reaction. I still get nervous with it though. I know someone who has a TON of allergies and 'Ohana made her special food that was safe for her. We were also offered the option of speaking to the chef to set up special dishes if we weren't comfortable with the standard menu options. Either way- we made it out of 'Ohana safe and sound- and full and happy. :goodvibes
