allergic to shell fish?

I love most kinds of Fish, Mussels and Clams!
But I have not eaten Crab, Shrimp (Prawns) or Lobster in over 30yrs due to violent vomiting a couple hours after eating Crab and shrimp on different occasions when in my teens. I didn't form a rash or have any difficulty breathing but after all these years wonder if I'm allergic to shell fish (even though I've had iodine injected a few times for a CT scan and MRI without issues).
Do you think I'm allergic to shell fish? Should I risk eating Crab Legs or Prawns again?

You are most likely like me, allergic to crustaceans. I just became allergic one day after years of eating shrimp, crawfish, and crabs. I still eat oysters and clams and such (mollusks). Don't risk it. It's not worth your life.

I feel strongly that you need to ask this question of a medical professional, not an internet discussion board.
 
You need to ask a DR not us..That said I have an allergy to ALL Shellfish.Reactions can vary ,you can have mild reactions and then all of a sudden have an anaphylactic one.I would just get hives and itchy skin and then one day my throat constricted.I now carry an epi pen for emergency,since some restaurants can cross contaminate by cooking shrimp in the same oil they cook french fries etc

A Dr will do real tests not your recollections from 30 years ago of events that may have just been a flu bug or bad shellfish.
 
I agree you need to discuss this with your doctor. He/she can run tests to make sure, that way you don't risk yourself.
 
I wouldn't risk it unless you confirm it with a doctor that you are not allergic to shellfish.

I took DS6 to an allergist when he developed hives and swollen, itchy eyes just after trying shrimp. Sure enough, he tested positive for allergy to shrimp, lobster and crab...but negative to clams, mussels, cod, tuna and salmon. He doesn't order fish in restaurants at all...we're afraid of the risk of cross contamination with shrimp, lobster or crab. I also carry an Epi-pen Jr. for him, and there is one at school in the nurse's office, along with a special form that his doctor had to fill out.

Get tested, it will help you a lot!
 
I'd consult an allergist to be certain; however, it's possible to be allergic to only certain types of shellfish...i.e. you sound crustacean specific. I myself am bivalve specific...so things like clams and mussels are off limits.

Also, if you list a shellfish allergy when booking adrs be aware that some chefs who don't understand about more specific shellfish allergies might try to restrict you from eating certain things you know to be safe. For example, I can eat shrimp but the chef at CRT would not serve me the shrimp appetizer.

Either way- it's best to get tested to find out for sure.
 
Thank you for all the replys and for sure I'll see a Doctor to get tested before consuming any crustaceans.
