My DS (5) started having distressing throat pain, itching, and hoarseness about 10 minutes after finishing dinner. He does have a history of food allergies(mostly just hives as a baby and toddler) but was just retested and cleared of the foods we were watching. He was playing Clifford on the computer and started asking for water. He became more distressed and layed down on the floor and I gave him benedryl. He continued to cry and complain and cough a little so I called his allgery clinic. He throat started to feel better about 30 minutes after his benedryl. We didn't use an EpiPen but I did give him prelone syrup. His allergy Dr ask me if we had melon tonight which we did but he didn't eat any. I did handle both cantaloupe and grapes and he ate the grapes. Neither of these foods were on his watch list. Anyone with any insight please chime in. Does this sound like a typical food allergy reaction?? Does anyone have a cantaloupe or melon allergy and what symptoms do you have??

Sounds like the cantaloupe to me. My DH is allergic to it. If DH has any cantaloupe his mouth and throat get a burning itching feeling. His allergy isn't very severe and it clears up with a dose of Benedryl. It is the only thing he is allergic to.

The only thing I know about allergies, is that anything is possible. The body is an amazing thing.
I hope you figure it out soon. It sounds like he had a pretty bad reaction. I'm glad you are prepared with the epi pen. My reactions have never been life threatening, just painful.
The docs always told me if my throat swelled up, to get to the er.

I'm allergic to a lot of fruits and that sounds exactly like the allergic reaction that I have. Sometimes if a fruit that I'm allergic to touches another food that I'm eating, I'll have an allergic reaction.

A couple of questions if you don't mind. How do you treat your reaction? Also, is your throat painful and itchy? He just kept saying it hurt and itched. I did ask him to compare his throat 30 minutes after benedryl to earlier and he used the word "open" (after benedryl). It's so hard with a five year old. I thought we were done with the food allergies...it's frustrating.

Thanks for the information. Is the burning painful? I'm sure I handled the cantaloupe before picking some grapes off the vine for him.

If I do have a reaction, I usually take benedryl. The benedryl makes me it much easier to breathe and as your son described, it makes my throat feel open. I used to get allergy shots but then I ended up having a reaction to those! :faint:

Yes my throat gets very itchy, it itches around my mouth and then my face starts to itch a bit. It feels like it's a bit harder to breathe and my throat does feel closed. My eyes also start to get watery.

Thanks MinnieM21. Well I knew if I posted here in the DIS boards there would be some others I could toss around some question with. Sounds very very similar to my DS. I'll keep you posted...hopefully we will figure out the cuase and avoid it! Just got a note in DS's folder from kindergarten that they are having a "friut" party on Firday and each student needed to bring a canned or cut up fresh fruit to make a salad. I'm so glad that this did not happen in school.

Just out of curiosity what are your symptoms? In hindsight I should have used the EpiPen because of the throat swelling. I wont wait it out next time...my neighbor said they can get to the point of no return (although we were not close to that). Thanks for sharing. :goodvibes

Your welcome. I hope you can figure out the cause of his allergic reaction. :)

The allergy clinic is suggesting that we do a food challenge. Has anyone had to do this themselves or with their child? We recently retested some foods (skin testing) but he didn't react to any. I do not think we tested for any melons. Anyone out there been through testing for food allergies?
