The original starter of the Pal Mickey Swap had a wonderful idea, to split the cost of a Pal Mickey, so that we can all save some money, to enjoy PM for a few days, to meet fellow Disers during the swap, and to then donate PM to a children's charity.

I think it's a pity that this has been called a "For Sale" by a Diser, and that now the mod has to talk it over with the other mods.

Am I wrong thinking that there's no selling or charging going on? It's a way of splitting the cost so that we don't have to spend $60 to buy a PM or $8 a day to rent one. We're chipping in and sharing him. Am I wrong?

I agree that this is more like sharing Illuminations Cruises than it is a "For Sale" thread. However, I trust that the moderators will make a fair assessment and apply the rules of the DISboards as is appropriate.

Aisling,

I do believe that this is a misunderstanding.

I am sure that most of you are familiar with the original Stroller Swap. The original swapper donated the stroller and with much planning on the part of a few, the stroller was passed from one DISer to another for year without any money passing hands (that *I* am aware of.)

When I was approached by a couple of people asking me if I would "stick" the Pal Mickey Swap thread, I did so without reading the post, thinking that it was being set up like the Stroller Swap.

This morning I was PMed by another mod (not a Budget Board Mod) about the thread that you refer to, asking me if someone was making money on "sitting" for the Pal Mickey. It was only then that I realized that money was involved in this process.

My first inclination was to think that it should not be permitted, but after reading a few other posts, I thought that perhaps I was wrong. So I decided to confer with my co-mods and Webmasters (who have the ULTIMATE decision). So I have e-mailed them and have posted the question on our Host Board and am awaiting their replies.

Please let's not start a fight. That is not what this board is here for. There is no need.

I am sure that we will get this worked out.

But I ask for a little patience until I see what my "bosses" have to say about this...

Thank You!

Please let's not start a fight. That is not what this board is here for. There is no need.

BethR, thank you for considering both sides of this. I will indeed be patient, and not be involved in any fights. I just ask you to see that no one at all is making money.

And now back to my Disney trip planning! I'm almost a 60 day woo hoo dancer!:Pinkbounc

I am the DIS'er who referred to this as a "For Sale" post.

I find it tacky and just a "ploy" to say you are going to "Donate" a Used Pal Mickey that has been passed around to Give Kids The World.

Right at the Give Kids the World website it states they only accept New/Unused Toys so, to borrow a line from Judge Judy: "Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining."

To purchase a Pal Mickey costs $60.00 ($56.33 + tax)

So far, there are 45 days taken @ $1.50/day = $67.50

This IS a money making scheme.

Vicky,

I have copied this from the post at the top of the Board :

MissSwish says:
I spoke to Kathy Aubruner at GKTW and she asked me to expression her deep heartfelt appreciation to everyone on this board, especially those who have agreed to participate in these swaps with their Pal Mickey being donated to GKTW. She is thrilled because she is aware of just how excited the children are going to be once they see and get to use a Pal Mickey.

Kathy is a very nice person and she welcomes anyone who wishes to stop by the Village to see all that they do for the children. Just call first to make arrangements for Village access. (800-998-KIDs)

So evidently someone has been in contact with GKTW.

As I said, please, let's not fight. Once I hear from the WMs, I will let you know what they think...

:)

VickyBaby, Aisling, BethR and anyone else unsure of or offended by the Pal Mickey swap:

I am one of the guilty parties trying to get a Pal Mickey swap going. I thought it was a great idea from what I had read regarding the previous PMswaps, and seeing the Illuminations Cruise and stroller swaps. I just thought it would be so great to only use him for a month and then donate him. I'm glad to see that VickyBaby was wrong about GKTW accepting the PM, and that they are even excited about it. Thanks Beth R for confirming they will accept him. I knew HaleyB or MicroCell - or someone - was calling GKTW directly to see if they would accept the PM at the end of the month. The reason we're donating him is out of fairness - it's not fair for one to keep him when everyone has paid for him. But more importantly, it is to bless those with GKTW, who have had many more things to worry about - adding a little more magic to their special time. I fully understand how VickyBaby could think it's tacky that we are giving a used toy, but we didn't intend on handing down a scruffy toy - it is more out of fairness and trying to bless others. And what a great lesson for our own kids! Why should WDW be all about US?!

As for someone making money off this, I never gave an exact amount in my post. I am waiting to see how many wanted to be in on the swap and intend to divide it equally among the swappers. If we could cover 45 days, it would be even better because, as Vicky pointed out, it would lower the cost. The $2.25 or so on the other swaps was not only the cost of Pal Mickey. They were trying to insure that they had a backpack to put him in, including some cleaning solution for him to be cleaned, and a notebook to jot down his adventures. (I think that was a neat idea - we found a teddy bear with a notebook at the Smithsonian Zoo in DC in 1/2001 and it was SO cool to read where he had been. We jotted down where we found him, what he did with us - he got to go to Pres. Bush's Inauguration - sent the owner a postcard and then left him somewhere else to be found by another family. It was some school in Kansas' project to be mailed back by May).

I really was leary at first of being involved and I completely understand if no one wants to try to join my swap, since I have only been on this board for a month or so - maybe a little longer. I just thought it was a great way to share the costs and be able to 1) give my children a little more majic during the trip, and 2)not have another stuffed animal around to trip over once we get home (I know, I'm a mean-ole-mom, but we have TOOOOO many stuffed animals).

I don't think anyone was trying to cheat anybody or fool anyone or make money. Thank the Lord there are still people who do give to charity and have good hearts and good intentions.

Thank you Beth R for looking into this. If you have any questions about my integrity, please PM me and I'll be glad to give references. I hope this didn't cause a lot of problems, and I'm sad to see that some were offended. I really do wish I could get a swap going for June, if it ends up being okay with the moderators. I am about topped out on my WDW budget. I can just hear DH now - "You want to buy a WHAT?! for $60!?" Maybe the grandparents would like to pay rental fees for one. But with the DISers, I would trust that they would clean him good, or I could do it myself when he got to me. Okay, I'm rambling - Thanks again - MOMlovesDAD

Well said MomLovesDad.

I am the one who has been contacting GKTW and I sent Beth copies of some of my emails indicating their willingness to accept this toy.

Momlovesdad,

It is a great idea!

Some people have nothing better to do than, well, you know.;)

How is money being made when the Disners are "splitting the cost" based on the # of days they are using Pal Mickey? Where is the scheme? The only "selling" is getting disners who want to be apart of the swap. Whether the mods decide to swipe the boards clean with all the pal mickey swaps or not, doesnt mean the swaps end. If anyone cant see that this is a great idea, I feel sorry for you. Anyone thinking straight can see the extra pays for mailing pal mickey to GKTW, cleaning swipes, bag to keep pal mickey in and etc.

To purchase a Pal Mickey costs $60.00 ($56.33 + tax) So far, there are 45 days taken @ $1.50/day = $67.50 This IS a money making scheme.
And this makes me "rich"? All this over less than $8.00? I'm not getting in a fight or trying to start one, but you got to be kidding me. Call me guilty for thinking of others, it really doesnt bother me. I stand proud to be able to help the organization GKTW in any way.

BethR, I am one of the ones who asked to have the swap listed as important. Im sorry if it put you in a tough spot. But I really think if you read the info on the swaps, you will plainly see, there is nothing for sale. One Pal Mickey has been donated for one of the swaps. Just because one or two people cant or wont understand how the swaps are actually set up, doesnt mean we all are doing anything wrong. We know the rules of the boards and we abide by them. We await the decision of the mods and will act accordingly.

the more I think about how the swap compares to selling/buying, if we got technical, then referring someone to the ING bank thingy is wrong too. You get $ by referring (sending a PM to other disners). Isn't that wrong also? I have seen lots of posts with "just sent you a pm"....KNOWING the reason is hoping your the lucky referral, money IS involved in someway. Arent you selling your name/referal? Well that offends me.............LOL. Just kidding, but get real people....you cant have it both ways. Mods, if you decide to slash the swap threads....you have alot more slashing to do with other threads/posts that have any mention of money. Do you really want to get that technical?

Southern4sure

Someone on the other thread offered to "babysit" PM for a few days as a filler. She was not looking to do anything but keep it safe for a couple of days. She was told that she would have to pay to do that and that she should be okay with that cause it was going to GKTW. Now why would anyone want to have to pay you guys to do a favor for you?

Now while everyone is feeling all righteous let me tell you something..... I think it stinks. Basically all of the people participating are getting to use PM for a lot less money and at the end everyone gets to have warm fuzzies cause they're turning over their used toy to a sick kid. Who is going to sterilize that toy? Can PM even be sterilized?

You wanna be nice....get the kids a brand new toy and forego a character meal. Don't be cheap and then pretend it's for some sick child.

but I can quarentee paying to sit or whatever one decides to call it was not a requirement. Some swaps has sitters who are not using pal mickey...just holding onto to fill a gap. I know my swap, we are all using pal mickey there are not gaps, .except 1 that was alittle confused. Everyone knew IF they wanted to participate and USE pal mickey...then we ALL split the cost. No harm done.

at the end everyone gets to have warm fuzzies cause they're turning over their used toy to a sick kid.
My warm fuzzies I get everyday.....not because I think Im righteous and feel good about pal mickey in the end, but because I spend my life helping others. In small ways (cooking food for the elderly) to anonymous financial contributions to help needy kids with college. So dont pass judgement in something you dont know about, esp. with me. The only people who have a say in this, whether right or wrong in what we would like to do is the organizatin itself. One small gesture goes a long way. What you think stinks, another may feel blessed. Who knows....we dont, but it doesnt hurt to try and as long as GKTW wants the pal mickeys.....noone should pass judgement on what others do.

Can PM even be sterilized?
YES, WDW uses a clean wash method on the PM they rent out. Granted, we cant do that, but Im hoping GKTW could take the pal mickeys to WDW and explain how the acquired them and just maybe WDW would use this method on these PM.

Don't be cheap and then pretend it's for some sick child.
I'm not going there.......I dont want to be barred from the boards.

if you were thinking of others, you would have simply mailed Pal Mickey to GKTW after you used him. Instead you are trying to recoup your cost and then mailing them a toy that has been used every day for 45 days. Don't play the noble humanitarian when you're waiting until PM has "paid for himself to donate him".

Is GKTW aware that this toy is being passed around from family to family for that long?

I asked that there be no fighting on this thread.

I am closing this thread for now.

I will let everyone know the webmasters' decision when I know it.

Thank you.
