Another one

We have Windows Millennium and we are looking to purchase an all in one scanner printer etc.

We have seen a Lexmark z83 but we'r enot sure if it's any good or should we go with the HP inkjet one.

We want it colour obviously, I want to be able to print photos off as well as our normal printing you know itineraries, letters etc, clipart blah blah.

What is dpi and what's a good dpi?

Sorry as you can tell we complete no brainers in the old world of home pc's

IMHO I would avoid the all-in-one printers. They are okay-ish, but tend to be 'jack of all trades, master of none'.

I have just bought a new HP printer - replaces an old Epson. It is a big improvement, especially in terms of speed.

Do you really need a fax capability? I think I have sent two faxes in the last six months...

So long as deskspace and power points are not at a premium, i would recommend buying seperate units.

Well Sam I am definetly not a PC expert, but have to agree with Go2209 on this.

I bought a Multifuntional machine (Canon Multipass Fax/Copier/Printer) and was never really satisfied with the performance of it. We ended up using it purely as a stand alone fax. With my PC that I use now I bought an Epson Stylus Color 760 Printer and am really pleased with the photographs I produce and I have just invested in a Epson Perfection 1250 Photo Scanner which is a standard flatbed scanner, but it has an adaptor that gives me the facility to print photographs from old negatives and 35mm slides! These are brilliant and for £99 plus vat a good buy.

HTH

My mom has the Lexmark. I haven't done any scanning with it but the printer part is very nice. Very easy to hook up and run.

The All-in-ones we have looked at do not have fax capability we already have a fax machine.

Janice how much was your printer if you don't mind me asking. Also does the scanner you purchased scan documents aswell as photo negs etc.?

We really only have a budget of £200 so don't want to go over this.

Thanks again

Sam,

With a budget of £200 you should be able to get a good photo printer and a decent scanner.

Most flat bed scanner will scan anything toy put under the top - documents, photos, magazines, books, even 3 dimensional objects if you want to be creative. Most also come with text recognition software, so you can scan a document and convert the scanned text into Word.

Have a look at some on-line sites for prices (forget PCWorld prices!). Try:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/

They have th HP Photosmart printer for £122

and a Umax 5400U (2400x1200 res.) Scanner for £87

I'm not suggesting you buy from here as this site is designed to sell to business' on credit account, but you can compare different models against each other etc and get lots of techincal data about each product.

http://www.pcwb.com

This is the business to business arm of THAT PC World!!!

Look in the Printers & Office equipment section

I don't who manages this site, but I bet they are clever, debonair, suave, modest and an all round good guy!!!

Bet you can't guess who??

;) ;)

If the PCWorld Business site has so much useful information it's a shame the sales staff in the shops don't study it more :)

Absolutley.....although part of the same group, we are distinctly different to the retail side...although I couldn't officially comment of course!!:)

Businesses behave very differently to home users and are treated differently by a totally different company (albeit within the same Dixons Group)

Corporate spiel over.

Botton line...we don't wear purple t shirts here:jester:

Using the PC World brand has it plusses and some definite minuses.
