Returned yesterday from Florida...Had a blast on the autotrain apart from a slight delay both ways everything went great. My boys thought this was the coolest!! Food was good too. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Woodbridge Va. about 3 miles from Lorton. Hotel was clean and breakfast was hot. My Van was well taken care of . Will take autotrain again. I can't wait. :sunny:

Hi Kitcat, Glad to hear you had a great trip. I'm just curious - how did it go with the meal for your youngest in the dining car? Also, how well did your youngest sleep and where? Did you have a sleeping compartment or did you travel in coach?

When we checked in they gave us 4 tickets for dinner. I also kept the emails from Amtrak in case of any problems. My little guy did'nt want any part of sitting down while we ate so he stood up and looked out the window while eating Capt Crunch!! I have a 4 1/2 year old son and of course little stitch..who is 20 months we got a sleeper car and they never slept better!!! I of course could not take advantage of it..I just couldn't sleep!! That train was just a rockin and rollin but still all in all I would do it again!! Thanks again for all your help.

When waiting to travel, I could not get enough info on the autotrain, so I will post our own experiences in case anyone is interested.
We took the train on Sat, Sept 24th. We drove to Lorton, allowed two extra hours for unexpected problems, but arrived w/ plenty of time to spare.
Kids had great fun, my husband enjoyed it also, and he really didn't want to go at all, so that is saying something. My kids are 10, 8, and 5, so they were quite mobile and loved travelling back and forth through the cars and up and down the stairs. Dinner was very nice, good food, good service and we enjoyed it immensely. Different and great fun. We took the early dinner as we did not have lunch while traveling. The time went rather quickly and before we knew it, it was time to settle in for sleep. I was watching the movie, so by the time I got back most of the extra seats were gone. (husband didn't claim them like I told him too) So my two girls ended up sleeping in the same seat. They managed ok, the rest of us had our own and we actually slept fairly well; not a real sound sleep, but not bad. We had to stop for repairs during the night, so arrived 1 hour and 45 minutes late in Sanford. We were also in the last 10 cars to be unloaded so got held up at the station for over an hour after de-training.
Return trip: We left WDW on Friday, Sept 30. We were a little early heading to the station, so we stopped at the mall not far from the station. We bought some magazines and books at the bookstore to read on the train, and still got to the station with time to spare. We were not all seated together, which was strange because the train was practically empty. We were able to move, but it was weird. We also had the terrible odor of sewer gas in our car, which was horrendous. The other cars were fine, so I think there was definitely something wrong w/ our car. Because it was so empty we were able to move to another car, and claimed the extra seats immediately. That way we were all able to spread out for sleeping. We left Sanford 15 minutes early and arrived in Lorton 15 minutes early as well. I thought the trip to Lorton was rougher and the air conditioning was either set very low or wasn't working properly as it was
rather warm. My husband couldn't sleep because he was actually sweating for a good portion of the night. I noticed it as well, though I didn't have the problem he did. Other than that, dinner was great, breakfast was great, the kids enjoyed it, and all in all it was a good experience. It was long though, but far, far better than driving and we would consider doing it again.
The only other problem, was on our return trip, in our original car, there was a toddler who was crying and carrying on something terrible. If we had had to stay in that car and he had been like that for most of the night, we would not have been able to sleep at all, and it would have made for a awful return trip. We were only in that car an hour and a half and I ended up with a headache. So having to move was a real blessing. I wonder if they would have let us move just because of the toddler. Anyone have that kind of problem?
Lori

Spima3: I'm glad you were able to move on your return trip and not have to listen to the toddler screaming all night. We were on the september 3 Auto Train and I'm sorry to say, our 18 month DD was screaming most of the night. We could have died and felt so sorry for all the people in the car with us. We just tried everything we could and could not get her to stop screaming. She just wasn't happy. I really hadn't forseen this happening since she had always slept better in my arms than anywhere else. This was why we decided to cancel our return reservation and drive home. Glad the rest of your trip went well. :flower:

Kitcat: Again, I'm just curious - did you have the family bedroom or another type of sleeper and did your 20 month old sleep in a bed by himself or with you? (I was afraid to have my DD sleep alone in the bed with nothing to keep her in there and figured if I had to hold her, might as well just go coach.) Sorry for all the questions but I just keep wondering what would have happened if we had decided to get the sleeper. Thanks. :flower:

Hi Annette,

Yes, we did get a sleeper car and my 20month old slept in the smaller bed on bottom I put pillows around him. My 4 year old slept on the other bottom bed. Hubby slept on top bunk. I however...slept on the bottom bed with my 4 year old opposite him (my head by his feet!!) so I could still be close to the little guy surrounded by pillows. It really did work out fine. They slept through the nite... Funny thing thou both my boys usually get up at least once a night at home they didn't on the train. I couldn't take advantage of it..If only I had more wine at dinner!! By the way I did see that some people got 2 bedrooms and they were able to remove a door or something to make it one bigger bedroom. I might look into that next time.

:rotfl: That's so funny! We moms are always happy as long as everyone else is safe and comfortable! Thanks again for the info. If we ever decide to do it again, we'll have to try the sleeper. :flower:

Okay, questions for the auto train experts. We bought our tickets through our TA. We received paper tickets that basically say we have 2 coach seats and 1 van. How and when are the coach seats assigned? Are we given a specific seat or just a car? That's the impression I've gotten, but most talk has centered on rooms and LL seats. I'm used to reserved coach seats on Amtrak that are just for that train with no specifics, other than class. Thanks!

Seating is Assigned when you check in. You should be given a seat number and a car number.

Cheryl

Indeed you will get your seats when you check in, they will match you with other people similar to you, there is a car with children, one with teenager, then just adults...If you go at a time when it is not as crowded, you will be able to spread out, and get an extra set of seats, which is then very nice to sleep.

Thanks for the info. I doubt I'll sleep. DH can sleep almost anywhere. I need to be exhausted to sleep anywhere except laying down in a bed. It's just the two of us 40 somethings. Our two sons are away at college.

We are currently in WDW. Took the auto train Sat Nov 5 and arrived today. We were packed. 225 or so cars and 450 or so people. Lots of snowbirds. They told us that the train going north on Sat only had 48 people on it. Trip was fine. We were 1 hr 45 minutes late due to freight congestion north of Richmond and a broken down freight train south of Richmond. We ate most of our dinner at a stop. We go back north in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it won't be crowded. I'll report once we get home about both trips.

Returned yesterday from FL on the auto train. This trip there were like 250 people and 115 cars. We got into Lorton at 11:30. The people waiting in line at Lorton to come into the station had to wait til our cars were off before they could check in. Our car was one of the last 20 or so and we were out of there by 12:30-12:45. We seemed to be just a little late into our middle of the night stop in SC, but it didn't seem significant. Then in the morning we stopped a few times, including Petersburg where we really lost time. All CSX problems of course. Ride was very smooth and on the way back we were able to spread out and sleep a little better. I moved a couple of rows back and across from DH. We've talked about riding again. My van came off fine, except my side view mirror seems to be not locking in place. No biggie. The van has 115,000 miles on it. We saw quite a few mercedes and cadillacs coming off the train yesterday and I didnt' see any problems.

Hi all! We will be traveling down to WDW on the train T-Giving Day 2006. I was wondering if anyone was on the train south this past T-Giving Day? We are curious about the crowd, and what the trip was like in general. Do they do anything special for meals that day? Thanks for all your help.

Although I did not travel on Thanksgiving Day this year, my friend did, I will certainly ask her the answers to your questions.

Just back from a Christmas trip 2005 (left Dec 23 reboarded in Florida on Jan 1) and thought I'd review our trip. We left central Jersey at 8:45 am and got there around 12:15 pm. There were cars in line, but the arriving train was late so cars were still leaving. We went and parked and checked in without waiting in the car line. We got seats with a plug and then left to get pizza (a right off the exit instead of a left). We got back in line around 2 pm. We boarded around 3 pm and left on time. If you don't go to the lounge car ASAP the fruit will be gone. Also, many people took up the lounge car so it was difficult to get seats for the movie. If the movie is important to you, stake seats out early. Dinner was fine. Train was booked solid 400 and some passengers. Lights were dimmed around 9:30. We went to sleep by 10:00. Take ear plugs!! It helps. Seats are pretty good, but of course, not big enough. The swaying didn't bother me as we rode.

We arrived in Sanford about 9:45 and had our car by 10:30. About 12:00 I got dizzy from not swaying anymore. It left after an hour or two.

Had a great time at Disney.

Checked in at Sanford on Jan 1 around 12:00. All seats with plugs were gone -- not a big deal. Went out to eat at Bennigan's just up the road. Came back and again, we left on time. Arrived in DC at 9:00 but didn't have our car until 10:30 (we were one of last ones off). Home by 1:30 pm. Had the dizzy thing happen again, but it left within an hour.

Would do it again. We paid $680. Probably wouldn't pay much more than that because it is still a lot of travelling.

we took the train this past thanksgiving .i think there were 250 people and 115 autos . did not seem that crowded the dinner was great better than excepted.we had a family bedroom was find for two adults and three small kids.the only thing is bring your own pillows the train pillows are way to small.we pull out at 3:45pm from lorton .stop in richmondto pick up another eng.about 15min stop.arrrived in sanford about7:25am on the 25th so we sat on the tracks outside the station until it open at 8 am .would do again but payed $657 for this trip oneway and just priced for oct 26,now $975 for same set up with family bedroom .i think $318 increase is a little much .so i guess we are driving this year unless price comes down a little. :confused3 :confused3

I have found that you really have to book early to get good prices, the prices go up as they sell tickets, and it can up very quickly.....
