Does anyone know anything about this type of situation? Apparently a normal level for a child her age is around 500 but hers is elevated to 3000? We are afraid to google it because of all of the misinformation likely to be uncovered so I thought about my disboard friends for some help.

Thanks!!!

I agree you should ask the doctor. I think there are a lot of things that can cause this, one of which is nutritional deficiencies, and particularly simply a vitamin D deficiency. They will probably check for any liver or bone problems or diseases which can be a cause, and they will look at whether there is a malabsorbtion issue or celiac disease/food allergy, or whether she simply is not getting enough Vitamin D, etc. Hopefully it is nothing more than a Vitamin D deficiency which I think is a pretty common cause. I'm not a doctor, so I do urge you to ask questions of the doctor.

I am a Medical Technologist and I will tell you that the most common cause of ALP elevation in children is simply because they are growing...specifically bone growth. If your daughter is 18 months old, then she is doing a lot of growing right now. I wouldn't worry...kids are supposed to grow...ALP levels are especially high if they are having a growth spurt...I doubt she has bone or liver disease...if so, she would have other symptoms. Hope this helps...

What was the reason they did a blood check to begin with? Is there concern about something? Keep in mind that levels at one draw are just a moment in time and aren't usually meaningful in and of themselves. They will probably check again in a month and see if it's changed and you'll get more info from that. (not a medical person, just a mom whose baby has had to have several blood draws in his life and always gets "off" results including the one you're talking about---we've seen some specialists and are now in a wait and see and continue to monitor mode)

Why didn't you just ask the doctor? :confused3

While this actually could be a helpful response to some people, it doesn't answer the question I asked. The child isn't mine, and therefore I have no access to the doctor, and I was just asking for a friend who is worried sick about her little girl.

Thank you so much to everyone else for their helpful answers. This is the daughter of a friend of mine who came to me because she was searching for reassurance from someone other than the physician. Apparently the levels were drawn because they are testing her daughter for allergies and the doc went ahead and ordered some other things.

I really do appreciate all of the answers! You diser's are great!!!
