Introduction

Let me begin first by introducing the travelers, Me (working Air Force Mom, DH, working and wonderful Dad, and DD, 18 months. This was our fourth Disney Cruise and our second Western Caribbean itinerary. We live in North Pole, Alaska so we always take our vacations in January to break up the long Alaskan winters (and boy, can they get looong!) Before our trip, we had experienced two weeks of -40 to -50 below so needless to say, we were ready to get to Florida and the Caribbean! This cruise was booked a year ago when we were onboard the Eastern Caribbean in Jan 2008. ***Important note*** To anyone who is military that reads this trip report, be advised that you can ask for a military discount on your already booked cruise. I wish I had known this on the last 3 cruises because the discount I received was way better than the 10% off and $200 onboard credit you receive when you rebook onboard. We had a Cat 4 room and they ended up crediting my account for $1300.00 after the military discount! I was glad I called and asked since Disney doesn’t really advertise it. You just have to fax them a copy of your military ID and they will credit your account within a few days.

Travel

We always book the insurance and ground transportation with the cruise so when we arrived a day early in Orlando, we stayed at the Sheraton (I travel a lot so I have a lot of Starwood points and was able to get a nice suite close to the airport.) We arrived on Friday 23 Jan around 5 pm and checked into the Sheraton, got something to eat, and slept! We were glad to be in nice sunny Florida!

Day 1 – Embarkation Day

We woke up the next morning, had breakfast and took the free shuttle to the airport. Upon arrival at Disney Cruise line transportation center, they immediately took our bags and loaded them onto metal cages bound for the Disney Magic. We went inside to check in an of course there were a ton of people in line to check in. I already had all my docs and ground transfers so I didn’t have to wait in line, they just stamped my pass and we immediately went in line to board the bus to take us to the ship. I noticed that our bus was not full and the ride went by quickly as I watched the cruise video and DH read and DD napped. About 45 minutes later, we went over the hill and I could see the Disney Magic in all its glory sitting in port! Upon arrival to the port, we went through security which was very quick and efficient as usual and headed on up to the port terminal. DH took DD and they went to look around as I checked us in. I received our Castaway club lanyards and our dinner tickets with the PLAAPLA 8 pm dinner seating and we had boarding #13. We waited for about half an hour and then headed in line to board. I noticed that most of the passengers were from Europe or South America which is common this time of year. ***Note***One thing I noticed that was different from previous cruises is that before you board, they take a photo of everyone in your party so that they have a photo to go with a name for everyone on the cruise. They didn’t do this before.
***Another helpful hint – If you are shopping for an upgrade, wait until you get to port and go over to see the guest services, guest relations person after checking in. You can ask her if there are any upgrades available and if there are, this will be best the best deal. It is even cheaper than calling a few days before the trip. She told me there were a few category 2’s available if I was interested. She quoted me a price of $2012.00 if we wanted to upgrade from a Cat 4 to a Cat 2. Not too bad considering a Cat 2 had two rooms, concierge service, huge balcony, etc.

We took our boarding photos and for once we all didn’t look exhausted, then headed across the gangway. “Welcome aboard the Modlin family!!!” I always love when they announce to everyone that you are boarding and everyone cheers. We headed up to Topsiders for the lunch buffet and also ordered a case of water for the week. Lunch at Topsiders was upper busy as usual (they had closed Parrot Cay because it was full so we had no choice but to go to Topsiders.) I wanted to sit out on deck but it was pretty full so we stayed inside and ate. The food was awesome and the fresh fruit was so good. (We rarely have fresh fruit in Alaska so it doesn’t take much to make us happy!) I got a strawberry whip cream cup for dessert and it was sooo good…

We decided to check out our room since rooms are ready after 1 and set some of our carry ons down. Our luggage hadn’t arrived yet so we decided to walk around deck 4 which has the nice track and it is always quiet. ***Helpful hint – Deck 4 is very rarely ever crowded. We always find empty comfy deck chairs to lie in, especially when the ship is pulling out of Port Canaveral. If you want to escape the madness of Decks 9 and 10, go to Deck 4 where it is quiet and relaxing. Deck 4 is usually busiest early morning when folks are up using the jogging track.

At 3:15, we had our DIS meet in Promenade Lounge and I was able to chat with a few folks from Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York I think… It was nice to put a face to the person you have been communicating with about the trip for so long! We stayed for about 15 minutes and then headed upstairs to get ready for the lifeboat drill.

At 4 pm we donned our life jackets and proceeded to our meet location for the drill. Helpful hint*** If you have little ones (infants, toddlers) you don’t have to put their jackets on, just carry them with you. I always see people with their little ones looking miserable in their life jackets and they don’t have to be in them. Our CM checked off our name and cabin number and the drill was over as fast as it had begun.

Next, we headed up to the Sailaway party which was in full swing with singing and dancing and Minnie and Mickey and the whole gang. I was a little disappointed because we got up there about 10 til 5 and they were already doing the countdown so I missed getting the videotape the countdown but at least I was able to see the cheering and hear the horn. I always love hearing the “When you wish upon a star” horn. We literally pulled out of port at approximately 4:51 which was unusual but I guess if everything was ready to go, why not leave early?

When we were pulling out of Port, we moved down to Deck 4 where it was deserted and quiet and we lounged on the chairs and DH and DD fell asleep and I took photos of the sunset and took in the serenity of the ocean. Around 6 we decided to head up to our room and see if our luggage arrived. It had so we proceeded to unpack and put our stuff away. DD’s pack and play was already set up and I noticed my package that I had mailed to the ship a week prior was also sitting on the bed along with our Castaway club gifts and a welcome back letter. I was excited about decorating our door so I got my magnets and stuff out and covered our door with decorations, as well as, put our Fish Extender out. For those of you that do the FE gift exchange, it is a blast! We already had neat little trinkets and magnets added to our door form other DISers soon after I put it up!

After we unpacked and got settled in, we set out on the veranda for awhile. We saw a few dolphins poke up and jump by and swimming next to the boat so that was neat. Oh yeah, for those of you keeping track, we stayed in Room 8556, Deck 8, Category 4. We love this room and have stayed in it 3 times. It is almost midship, so there is not a lot of movement, and it is a very quiet room. It has a great veranda and we actually spend a lot of time on our veranda. I highly recommend this room. It is pretty big and easy for us to walk around. I noticed that there is another fold out bed, a wall bed, and a ceiling bed that will open if you have more people in your party.

We decided to get dressed for dinner which was quick since it was cruise casual night. We walked around and looked in the shops while we were waiting for dinner. We were the first in line for Parrot Cay and right at 8, the doors opened to cheers with the CM’s welcoming us. Our table was Table 18 and we had Daniel (from Hungary) and Cassida (from England) as our wait staff. They were awesome and I hope to have them again! What great people! There were several night where we literally closed down the restaurant laughing and having a good time with them. We made such good friends with them that on the last night, we traded e-mails and addresses. They were really great people. Our dinner mates were a family with 2 little kids (ages 3 and 6) and they were a lot of fun. We hit it off immediately and had a great time the entire cruise. Dinner was really good and of course I had beef and DH had seafood. I had the sundae for dessert and it was so good! Of all the restaurants, Parrot Cay is my least favorite but I still love the food. I have never had a bad meal on the cruise. Ever. I am not picky, though, so take that for what you want.

***Helfpul hint – For those of you cruisers who travel with infants and toddlers, Disney has everything taken care of. I brought DD’s forks and spoons, bibs, etc, and Dis already had everything I needed when we sat down to eat. They had little silverware, bibs, cups, everything. They just know everything! Fascinating! They even cut up her meat and everything when they served her meal. One thing I noticed on the ship is that the CM’s really cater to the children. They gout of their way to pay play with them and my DD just loved all of them. She was blowing them kisses by the second night and then every night after that. They just loved her and she loved them.
After dinner, we did our usual walk around the ship a few times (so we didn’t go to bed full---yuck!) and then retired to the room for the night. We always sleep with our veranda door open so we can hear the sound of the waves. Plus, the air was so warm.

Up next Day 2! I will also try to post some photos! I took over 2000!

Hey, we were neighbors! We were in 8542 and I remember the the Alaska references on your door. Glad you guys had a good time too. I feel you on the Air Force stuff. My dad was career AF and we lived EVERYWHERE! Heck, I was born on Clark Air Base, Manila Philippines. I was actually going to join too, but was diagnosed with hypertension at age 18. So much for a professional career in flying. Good for you, for doing the job and a big hearty thank you for doing what you do.

I'm enjoying the trip report too. Good work & keep it up:thumbsup2 . I'm looking forward to more. It's a hoot to compare other's experience on the same boat to my own.

Thanks! Yeah, I love going where the air Force takes us! I am catching up on your trip report now. I love comparing the trips as well! I hope you guys had a blast on your trip! Back to the grindstone for me tomorrow! Yuck! I wish we were back on the ship now!

Okay, here is Day Two. Hopefully I will have more time tomorrow to work on the rest!

Day 2 – Key West

I got up at 7 so DD and DH could sleep while I slipped away for my spa time. I had an appointment at 8 for a facial. I arrived at the Vista spa and checked in. I met Andrea and she led me to the women’s room where I change into a robe and slippers. We headed to her room that had a gorgeous view of the ocean and I laid down and Andrea did my facial which was wonderful. She also gave me a nice upper body massage and we chatted about where we lived, travels, etc. Andrea was from South Africa and was a total sweetheart. She showed me some of the product that she used on me and I decided to buy some. Make sure they tell you the price so you don’t have a heart attack when you decide to buy it. Their product is very pricey and I overheard a few people complaining about the price. If it is too expensive, then DON’T BUY IT! I bought it and I love it. The facial and massage were great and I felt refreshed as I headed back to my room. DH and DD were eating their room service breakfast (we order room service every morning so we would have some fruit and milk ready for DD when she woke up.) We all got ready and headed up to Topsiders for breakfast. After breakfast, we walked around and watched the ship as we pulled into Key West. It was a gorgeous day and of course Key West was great! Here are some of the things we did in Key West:

-Visited the Key Lime Pie factory and had a chocolate dipped frozen key lime pie on a stick. A Key West must! So yummy!

-Walked to the Southernmost Point and took photos (small line but it went by quickly)

-Visited Mallory Square and took photos of all the interesting people and street performers before sunset (that’s when they all come out!

-Went to the Key West Butterfly farm and conservatory. It was beautiful and they give a hefty military discount for admission and at the gift shop. We went to the Butterfly Farm in St. Thomas and this one was far better in my opinion. The people were friendly and don’t forget that they also give a cruise discount and they honor multiple discounts!

-I always love to visit Del Sol – They give a cruise discount and you also receive a free beach bag if you buy two t-shirts. My bag had a cruise ship and the ocean on front that changed colors in the sun. a nice freebie!

-We also ate lunch at Margaritaville and shopped mostly on Duval Street.

After we got back on board, DD napped for a bit and then we headed up to the new toddler wading pool at the Mickey Pool. DD loved it as she could splash around and get sprinkled with water. The wading pool is a nice new addition to the Magic conducive for little ones. After the pool time and DH going to the Cove Café for his daily fufu coffee fix, we headed in for showers and got ready for dinner.

Dinner was at Lumiere’s, my DH’s favorite of the restaurants. It was cruise casual attire again, so that made things quick and easy getting ready. Dinner was great and the atmosphere at Lumiere’s is very nice. It is patterned after Beauty and the Beast so they have roses in glass and everything is French (after Lumiere, the candle in the movie remember? lol!) DH had seafood and escargot (his favorite) and of course, I had the beef (I honestly can’t remember what it was but I always get the beef so it was like tenderloin or something.) Dinner was great, once again. DD had the macaroni and cheese and had fun eating it! I had another sundae for dessert. It was awesome with the brownie in it!

Another helpful hint – Just in case you didn’t know (it took me awhile to learn) you can order more than one thing on the menu. You can get two desserts, two appetizers, two main courses, etc! Just ask! The servers will bring you what you want. Also, if you like a certain dessert, or appetizer, you can ask to have it again and they can usually hook you up. I always ask for the same sundae and Daniel was able to get it for me. You literally can eat yourself to death on a cruise!

After dinner, we walked around a bit (a must after that big meal), went to the shops on board and then went to bed.

Up next Day 3...A nice day at Sea!

Here are some photos of my DD and DH on Deck 4 shortly afterleaving PC:)

Day 3 – Day at Sea

The next day was spent at sea so we got up and went to breakfast at Topsiders. We ate outside on deck this time as it was a gorgeous day. After breakfast, we went and did a little shopping and walked around for awhile. I decided it was a gorgeous day for family photos and so we went and took photos by the bow and in the rear of the ship. Now, I have a really nice camera and I consider myself an amateur photographer so I bring my tripod and everything and take my own photos of our family, DD with the Princesses, character meets, etc. I don’t like to pay for photographs when I can take them myself and Disney is pretty pricey on their photos packages. Plus, photoshop is a great thing as well as digital scrapbooking so you can make your own borders, etc. I recommend bringing your own photography equipment but that is just me. That being said, Disney takes great photos and there is a plethora of opportunities for photos throughout the cruise and on Castaway Cay. Disney has great photographers that are great with the kiddos.

We took DD to Flounders nursery so she could have a break from us and DH and I could layout by the adult pool. The nursery is really nice and they are very good with the kids. We didn’t have any problem dropping Mylee off since she goes to daycare at home so strangers don’t bother her. We watched some kids completely flip out and parents looking distraught but trust me, they are in good hands and the CM’s are really good with them.

Things of note for Flounder’s nursery:

-They don’t feed your child so make sure your child is fed and good to go for the next couple hours or however long you decide to drop them off for. The reason is because of food allergies and they don’t want kids getting sick. Makes sense to me.

-You need to bring a diaper bag with you wish diapers, wipes, bottles, sippy cups, etc. I brought mine with full cups so they didn’t have to get her anything to drink. It was ready to go

-They prefer for you to bring your child to the nursery when they have already had a nap. I am not sure why on this one but it wasn’t a big deal because when we brought DD on Thursday, she slept the entire time.

-They are very big on germs, etc. If you little one even has a hint of a runny nose, cough, diarrhea, they will not allow them to stay in the nursery.

After we dropped DD off, we headed up to the adult pool which was super busy and it was really windy so we decided to drop down to deck 9 and grab chairs on the adult side under the clear awning. It was quiet and nice and relaxing. We stayed out there for a couple hours and I ordered a Bon Voyage (virgin since I am allergic to alcohol – bummer…) and then headed back to pick up DD. She was happily cuddled in the arms of one of the CM’s and they said she did fine. She looked sleepy so we headed back up to the room and DH read out on the verandah while DD slept. I took this as a good time to go and deliver my FE gifts

Participating in the FE gift exchange was a blast! I got to see where all the levels of rooms were located and secret corridors within the ship. I got turned around and lost a few times but it was fun. I loved seeing everyone’s door decorations and even took a few photos of some of them. It was fun being sneaky and trying to sneak the gifts in the FE without getting caught. I enjoyed it and will definitely do it again!

Let’s see, after I delivered the FE gifts, I went back to check on DH and DD and decided to get a snack at Goofy’s Galley. I love their roast beef and turkey sandwiches and the fresh fruit! I got DD chicken strips which she loves and we snacked on the verandah and enjoyed the beauty of the ocean and the warm sunlight.

Day 3 was formal night so there was a lot of preparation. Plus, we wanted to see the Golden Mickey’s, which is my favorite show on the ship. I was looking forward to seeing DD’s reaction to a live show since she has never seen one. DH dressed in a suit and tie (you weren’t going to catch him in a tux and I don’t blame him, it was so hot), DD in her little princess dress (one of many!), and I in a formal black dress. We headed to the Golden Mickey’s and walked down the red carpet where the “paparazzi” was waiting on us and yelling at DD to look their way and snapping photo after photo. She ate it up! I giggled and DH rolled his eyes. I thought it was cute since they yell out things like, “You look fabulous! Look over here!” DD just loved the attention since she is such a ham. We saw “Rona Rivers” interviewing “stars” and she was really funny and so were the kids. It was funny to see how they react once they see the recorder on them. Most families were dressed up for the occasion and everyone looked so nice!

The Golden Mickey’s were exceptional as always and I took lots of photos. ***Make sure you take photos with the flash off because flash photography is strictly prohibited due to the safety of the performers. Also, no video is allowed during any of the shows. DD managed to pay attention and watch almost all of the show before getting squirmy. We left with about 2 minutes left in the show which was perfect because we beat the crowds to have our formal family photos taken. Within 5 minutes of us getting our photos taken, it was a madhouse because the show let out and everyone got in line for photos. Glad we left the show a couple minutes earlyJ

Dinner was at Animator’s Palate that night which is my favorite restaurant. It wasn’t the show night so dinner was pretty quiet and the food was awesome as well. I know I had the beef and couldn’t remember if it was the filet mignon night or not. The filet was awesome. I think DH got the swordfish which he raved about for the rest of the trip. Like I said before, he is the seafood guy and I am the meat eater! After dinner, we went for our usual walk and went to the shops for awhile and then retired for the evening. Formal night was a lot of fun because getting dressed up for a night is always fun to me. That being said, I also love putting my shorts back on and being comfortable

Next up! Grand Cayman and the Sea Turtle farm! A must see!!!

Great trip report! It's like re-living our cruise! We had a great time and keep talking about when we are going to do it again!

Love your report so far. Our room was right down the hall from yours (8572) we passed your room hundreds of times. I love the photo of you and DH from a previous cruise that you had on your door. can't wait read more.

Thanks! I have enjoyed reading all the trip reports, too! I enjoy writing it because it really is like reliving the cruise! I am working nights this week so hopefully I will have the next install updated soon!

It would be so nice to be back on the Magic now...

Thanks so much for reliving it all for us here still waiting to go! Your pics are adorable and I can't wait to read about Grand Cayman and the turtle farm!

HI - I'm really enjoying your trip report. I don't know how you cope with those sub-zero temperatures you mentioned - we had -5 here this winter and that was enough for me! I spent time in Alaska when working for Princess Cruises and loved it - truly spectacular scenery. Your little one looks adorable in her formal dress - sounds like she is really enjoying the cruise!
