Alaska - shoes?

Folks who have been to Alaska - I'll have running shoes for most days, and black flats for dinner if needed. Will I also want a pair of shoes that can get wet (Keens)?

If you go rafting in Alaska you will need warm clothes and wool socks. The rafting company will give you a dry suit and waterproof boots wear. The rivers in Alaska are glacial water so you wouldn't want to get your feet wet.

I concur! That water is cold! I stuck my GoPro underwater by hand.... I couldn't keep it under there for more than 30 seconds. Just remember it is cooler up there. If your sneakers are breathable/ mesh type, a little breeze or rainy day, your feet will be cold and/or wet. Better to bring a variety of footwear.

When we went we took a good pair of hiking boots and a pair of sneakers / running shoes. We used the trails at Alyeska, which are superb, as well as hiked to a glacier which was optional. If you go gold panning than that too was quite muddy on our visit. There is not too much formal dressing in Alaska and if you would be comfortable in a pair of "flats" than have at it. Bring a bunch of clothes that you can layer for the weather swings quite a bit. It truly is wilderness.

Thank you. This is a tricky one in terms of packing for us Southerners... (Wool socks? What are these creatures you speak of?)
