We are sailing in June and my son really wants to get to see a moose in the wild. Any experiences with spotting moose on an excursion in years past?
Thanks!

Nope. Just did a quick search for more info. Looks like you need to be up at Anchorage or into the interior - and then near fresh water or marshy areas.

Bears, yes (Out in a field as we were returning from Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau. Definitely not in the wild - it was beside the road.) And eagles. Seals. And whales.

(And I have spent 5 weeks of my life doing AK cruises, so plenty of time to have seen one.)

I agree it's very unlikely you will see a moose on an Alaskan cruise. We almost drove into a moose at night in Northern New Hampshire (Colebrook area) though... I think you're more likely to see a moose in Northern New England --near lakes in northern New Hampshire and Maine.

Animals we saw on our Alaskan cruise: Bears are more likely in salmon season--late July and August. We heard bears in the woods/saw some fur when we were walking to the waterfall at Mendenhall glacier on our August cruise. Bald eagles (very common) in Juneau. Seals on the ice floes, and some whales on the inside passage.

Have you considered a cruise to Sweden?

No realli! She was Karving her initials on the moose with the sharpened end of an interspace toothbrush given her by Svenge—her brother-in-law— an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian movies: "The Hot Hands of an Oslo Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Molars of Horst Nordfink"...
Mynd you, moose bites Kan be pretti nasti...

On a serious note, I have no idea, but it doesn't sound likely based on the above responses. If you come to Northern Utah, it isn't too uncommon to come across them when hiking.

It’s possible to see moose on the islands of southeast Alaska where the cruise lines go. Chichagof island (Hoonah), Baranof Island (Sitka), and Juneau have had occassional moose in recent years. But, there are no permanent populations of moose on those islands so you would only see them if they swam over from the mainland. A good friend of mine has lived in Sitka for more than 40 years and has seen a moose once. Our tour guide in Hoonah last year had lived in Hoonah his whole life and had never seen one, although there were people in town that had. So, it’s possible that you might get a sight of a moose, but pretty unlikely in the locations that cruise lines visit.

Bummer but thanks for the replies! We've been on a DCL Alaska cruise before and traveled to other US spots known to have moose but haven't been lucky enough to see one. We will just have to keep trying!
