Hi, we used our ny ez pass a few weeks ago while in Orlando. We had our ez pass in the windshield, right where we keep it at home on our car. We still got charged a toll. It almost seems like the toll plaza is picking up the license plate before the ez pass. Anyone else have this, or suggestions of how to avoid it? It actually happened last summer as well, ez pass was placed right on the dashboard.
Thanks,

I have a SunPass we stick to the windshield when we fly down and rent a car. I always look up the preferred windshield location on the SunPass site and place accordingly so all the items now in and on the windshield don’t mess it up. It usually needs about 2” clearance as I recall. We use Alamo and have never had an issue.

I used my PA EZPass on my Feb/March 2023 rental with Alamo and did not have any problems. It has suction cups and I stuck it to the windshield.

The instructions tell you to mount the transponder on the windshield. Buy a suction mount if you don't want to mess with velcro on a rental car.

Ok, we had it on the dashboard close to the front window, but will definitely use a suction cup next time around-maybe it was set too far back and it picked up the license plate before the transponder. Thanks for the tip!

When I rent, in addition to putting the transponder in the windshield, I also add the license plate to my account. Of course, then you have to remember to take the plate OFF the account when you're done with the rental.

ok thanks, I just ordered a suction cup holder for the EZ pass for the windshield. I guess the best place to put it is right under the rear view mirror?

Looks like you already bought a mount, but for others in a similar situation, I use this one. It works great.

Been there, forgotten to do that, paid about $20 in tolls for some lucky rental car customer.

I haven't had a car since EZ Pass was accepted. I have extra velcro. I'd probably use it, removing it with my finger(nails) before returning the car.

Edited to add advance auto has suction cup mount for around $7. Stocked in local stores.

More like level with the mirror, behind the mirrors That way it doesn't block your vision.

A few cars have something in the windshield which blocks the transponder. NY offers fender mounted tags

The first time that I used my EZ Pass on a rental car, I forgot to take the plate off of my account. I had 3 new charges so I called EZ Pass. She said to email my account information with a copy of my receipt showing when I turned the rental car in. I received a refund for the 3 charges that weren't mine in a couple of weeks. She said that this happens all of the time. Lesson learned - I make sure to take the rental car plate off of my account all of the time now. I pull into the Shell station on Jeff Fuqua Blvd to fill the car up and change back to my car's plate.

All great information, thanks! I'm going to take note of that video, never thought placement with the rental car was so important, lesson learned!

When I add the rental to my PA EZPass, there is a box to click that it is a temporary vehicle and the dates I will use it, then it falls off the account automatically.

This is so important - i forgot to do that with my unipass and even though i have the transponder with me in ohio, im still getting charged florida tolls because the plate is being read and attached to my account.

Really frustrating - but at least i caught it before it got worse. only lost about $20.

This is where mine is. I use it all the time.

Wait. Does the system really charge you for a car with plates in your account even if you remove the transponder? I presume in the absence of a transponder it scans the plate and then issues the bill based on EZPass records even though the car and plates are registered to a rental agency?

FWIW, I have never forgotten to remove a rental car from my account if I add it for a vacation, but I have on occasion neglected to add a rental car to my account even though I use the transponder. I see no difference in how well the transponder works while on vacation based on whether or not I add the rental car to my account. YMMY and indeed My MMV next time, but that's my data point so far.
