I know this will sound odd, but I told my sister-in-law I would ask . . .

We are taking my SIL and her hubby and their combined 5 kids to Disney next year for their first trip there ever. We are planning on getting two 2 BR (since we have 3 kids too) at AKV in August (based on availaibility), however my SIL has been told by someone, that they stayed there and there was an awful smell from the animals at the pool. I have never heard of this before, but she is going nuts about the possibility, and now doesn't want to stay there if it is true. Does anyone have any experience staying there that can address this issue? :confused3

I mentioned that maybe the smell was from the construction, which should be done done by Aug. when we go.

DH and I were really excited baout staying there, but I don't want to deal with her being unhappy if this is an issue. We saved our points in order to be able to do this trip for them.

Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks

I am staying this Monday 10/27 - 11/4 at AKV (Savannah View) and will try and remember to pop back to answer your question. Feel free to PM me if you don't hear back after I return.

I have gone to AKV probably half a dozen times for dinner or other things and have only once noticed an animal smell.

Take care.

Adam

The real "problem" with the Disney animals at AKV is that no matter where you are outside or in, there never seems to be any smell from the animals. You sometimes imagine they must bath the darn things twice a day because you can't figure out how they do it otherwise. Been to pool and never noticed any smell from the animals.

THat was my thouht too! I never once smelled anything remotely like an animal smell!

I did not notice any animal smells a month ago.

I did notice there was a daily "pooper scooper" truck and crew, so that probably keeps the smells down.

The only animal smells that I've noticed there are the smells from the two-legged animals.

You have nothing to worry about...I'm sure if there were smells from the animals, people would have made a "big stink" about it! We never smelled a thing, whether at the pool or on our balcony overlooking the savannah...perhaps there was someone in the pool area who was having an "issue" that day, and that is what they smelled ;)

the dvc units are at the top - 5th and 6th floor - so tell her any smells are people not animals.

now maybe some places on the first floor their might????

but the AKV are at the top.

We've never noticed a bad smell from the animals, and we've had a few savannah view stays. I love the pool, there are hot tubs near the savannah, never had a problem at all.

However, I do not think that I would bring her to AKV without a true heart to heart. Some people have more sensitive sense of smells, I wouldn't want to make her unhappy, and I wouldn't want to ruin my vacation worrying about her sensitivities. Maybe another resort would be a better choice.

you know she might be afraid of animals.

maybe your family at AKV and her family at OKW?

Wow - let me get this straight. YOU are using YOUR dvc points to provide her with a fabulous FREE resort for a wdw trip and she's whining about thinking it smells like animal poop?? LOL - I hope you love her alot to put up with the ungrateful rude attitude.

AKL does not smell like animals - you can tell her that's a ridiculous statement/question. For the prices Disney charges, does she think people will pay it to have it smell like they're staying in a barn/stable/sewer?? Of course not. :rotfl2:

I'd give her the option to come or not come....plain & simple. But, the qualification has to be that if she DOES come - there's to be no whining or complaining about anything! She can check out and pay for her own resort somewhere else if she doesn't like what you're providing.

Good luck!

My sense of smell is the most sensitive of all my senses. With that said we stayed a week in August this past summer. Even with the August sun/heat I didn't smell a thing. I can assure you with 100% certainty your SIL will not smell anything. It is an AMAZING resort. You and your family will enjoy yourselves immensely. :thumbsup2 Oh and BTW we had a savannah view!!!

I think I know what she is referring to. As the other posters have mentioned there is no bad aroma from the savannahs. However, when I was at AKL in May '07, the flamingo area (i.e. near the pool) was a bit odorous.

Thanks for all the feedback! I called my SIL and put her mind at ease.

I don't think she was trying to be ungrateful with her question, I think she really is overwhelmed with the idea of a trip to Disney. She went once a very long time ago and did not have a good experience. She is looking forward to going with her kids for the first time, and think one person put this into her head, so she is focusing on that. She is very grateful about the trip and I am sure we will have a great time.

I must admit after visiting AKV last week after a trip to Boma, I am so excited about staying there. It is so beautiful!

Stayed in Sept and never once smelled any animal smells at the pool/room/etc... unless were were right by the animals then it was VERY faint! We LOVE AKV!

Stayed in a 1 bedroom SV villa in mid August and never smelled anything.........I cannot even remotely imagine what your sil's friend smelled by the pool when she stayed there ????

I've stayed at AKL a few times and AKV once and have never noticed any smell from the savanna. I took the Sunset Safari on our last trip (where they drive you around out on the three savannas) and even being that close the animals there was no odor at all.

No smells last week when we were at AKV. We were in room 5584 and had lots of animals day and night with no odor. Only went to the pool for a short time but did not have any odor there either.

Have a great trip.
