First - I just purchased my little corner of Disney with the minimum new contract of 160 points at AKV (Sept. UY).

Second - My wife and I had debated it over the weekend and decided to join and take the 160 developer points instead of the $8/pt. since we were going to go down for a week in early December anyway. This would allow us to bank some of our points for 07 and keep us "ahead" for a little while anyway.

When I called my guide to start the process, she said they had just received an email and the developer points are now doubled. Because most were taking the $8/pt incentive, they had a lot of excess points for this year and this is how they were giving them away "for a limited time". (I don't know if this applies to SSV or not.)

So, now, does anyone have any idea how my family of 3 including my 20 month old daughter can possibly spend 320 points before the end of the year? :)

So you're saying that the choice is now 320 'bonus' points OR $8/pt? You still couldn't get $8/pt AND 160 'bonus' points, right? In any case, that's a nice deal! When do you have to use the dev points by?

No, it wasn't where I could get both the 160 and the $8. That would have made me very happy.

Like the rest of the developer points, they need to be used within 7 months. I could try renting the excess points I guess.

Thanks for the quick reply! What you might want to do is make an extravagant reservation using those points ASAP (remember that non-AKV owners can start making AKV reservations on Wednesday) and then try to rent the points. If you are able to rent them for the price you want, you can switch your res to the renter's preference, and if not, you've got a super-sweet bonus vacation for free.

Reserve a room for me. :woohoo:

If that doesn't work for you, do you have any family or friends you can invite?

Word of caution. Just because you have the points, doesn't mean that you can get a reservation. If you like the deal, have your Guide help you with your reservation and make the purchase contingent upon the reservation. It's amazing what can happen when they want to make a sale. :thumbsup2

Browse the Conceirge Collection (or even the Adventurer's Collection). There might be something close to home that really appeals to you. :)

Would you consider spending the developer points on a cruise and saving your first visit home for next year?

Exchanging the "extra" developer points for a week's stay for another timeshare (via Interval International - see the World Passport Collection). You could deposit the points now and ask for a future date - next year or even the year after (I think).

Anyone special you'd like to treat? The points could be used for a WDW stay at the Poly or the GF or the YC or the CR or one of the moderate resorts if you can't get another reservation at the AKL or a larger unit.

No matter what you choose - Congratulations and welcome HOME!

This whole topic is a very bad one for me!!!

I added on 200 points in AKV and took the developer's incentive. I never received anything about my extra points, but didn't think anything of it. Then my new contract was added on the dvc website, still nothing about my extra points. I e-mailed dvc to ask when I'll see those points in "my dvc" & they said they won't show up on there & that when I'm ready to use them I just let them know, "I want to use my developer's points". So a few weeks later I call to make a reservation & SURPRISE SURPRISE I'm told that I should have received something in mail about the points & that I didn't receive that incentive. So I asked them about the e-mail I sent & how they responded. They asked who replied to the e-mail, so I told them & I was put on hold. The went & "looked into it" & simply said, "It was a mistake".

So to make a LONG story short, my wonderful guide gave me the $8 off instead of the developer's incentive. I would have realized it the week after I added on but the cm I e-mail was obviously not all there & didn't even think to maybe, oh I don't know, look into my account info before just replying. :sad2:

To the OP: congratulations on both buying into DVC & having a DVC guide that knows what he's doing!

Congrats! When did you purchase?

To help to understand: You paid the regular price, and took the incentive points of 320 and must use them within the next 7 months?

If so, could the incentive points be banked? Also, what use year do you have?

Enjoy your DVC points and again, congrats!!!

Why not book a cruise. 320 points should do that very easily, and I just love the cruise ship ..... kick back and relax and such wonderful food......

To clarify, I purchased yesterday and paid the full $104/pt. As far as I know, I believe that the incentive just started yesterday. We were already prepared to just take the 160 incentive points to use for a vacation this year, so the 160 was just a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We were going to wait on AP discounts for the Poly this fall, so maybe I'll use the points towards staying there.

Are those points bankable? I would assume not but if they were it just may get me off the fence.

Thanks,

Mike

p.s. Congratulations and WELCOME HOME!!!!!!

They are not bankable. They expire 7 months from your contract date. So if you purchased AKV today (June 5th) the developer points could be used for travel through Jan 4th or 5th.

Perhaps larger accomidations? Maybe a longer stay? A trip makes a wonderful gift also, I did that last year, for Bro & SIL & Kids, Mom & Dad, and IN-laws. It went over so well that we are doing it again this year, After last years trip we bought 300 VWL points so that we can treat family as we see fit.

Congrats!

Does anyone know how long this double incentive will last? My dh and I are heading down on 6/25 and I'm hoping he'll agree to add on. This incentive may put him over the top because we were hoping to do a huge trip and this would allow it without us having to use any points from next year.

Anyone know?

Thanks bunches!!

Just found this thread, and sorry to maybe thread jack, but a question if I may. I've been doing a LOT of reading here, and thinking over the past few months. I went to the DVC site a few days ago, and requested the free DVD just to have a look. In short, I recieved a phone call yesterday from a rep wanting to know if I had any other questions, and if they could help me out with anything other than just sending the DVD. I was told about a deal, AKV, for basically $16,000, which would include 160 points. (I'm assuming what I am reading about here).

My question however is this. The rep that I spoke with, briefly, made it seem as though those points were permanent, almost "free" for the next 50 years so to speak. Is this, or is this not the case? I didn't ask at the time as I was running out the door to my daughters T-ball game, and figured I would call them back, or get another call from them, once I recieve the info, now including some packet along with the DVD, in the mail.

Thanks! (I think the more I read about DVC the more confused I get, LOL).

I would not say "free". You would be paying $16000. But after that (depends on if you pay everything up front or mortgage it) you will have to pay dues every year on your points. Dues vary by resort and range from $4.00 and up. Someone else could better tell you the exact amount. Now that $ amount is per point owned. So 160 points x $4.00 = $460 a year for dues. If your mortgage is all paid then you would only have the cost of dues per year. A fraction of what you would pay for a rack rate at any resort. I hope this makes since.

Sorry-reread your post and yes, you would get 160 every year for the next 50 years or so! And they can be used in a number of way!!

Thanks VERY much for the response. If I'm reading this right, and God I hope I am, this may very well sway my decision. At that rate, total cost, this would be a better deal than I could have possibly imagined. Also, with the times my family travels, usually May or August, 6 nights etc., 160 points would be, most likely, more than enough for us.

I hate this, LOL. I've been convincing myself NOT to buy into DVC, but I don't know, this might be too good to pass up. :goodvibes

Just to be clear though, what you seem to be getting excited about is the normal DVC pricing and program, not any sort of special incentive. That's great too  , but if you do decide to take the plunge, make you you ask about the developer points deal or $8/pt discount!

Thanks as well, again, the more I read sometimes the more confused I can become, LOL. I always thought the usual "deal" was 15K or so up front, PLUS the cost of points, coming out to anywhere from like 25-30k total depending. Eh, I'm probably STILL confused. :lmao:
