We checked into a studio at Kidani Village this past Sunday. While we really like the decor of the room, and were impressed by the blown glass chandeliers in the lobby, I have to admit that Kidani has moved to the bottom of my WDW DVC list. (No flames, please. It just isn't our cup of tea.)

Yes, it is nice to have a savanna view and be able to look out at the animals. But, for us, that perk just isn't enough to made up for the other inconveniences.

I guess I should have done a little more research about the resort, because the only preference I put on our reservation was for the top floor. We're on the 3rd floor, which is still good for viewing animals, so I'm not disappointed with that. What I didn't know to ask for was a room near the lobby. OMG, I'll never complain about the "long" hallways at Boardwalk again. This hall is just ridiculously long. We're in villa 7776, which is in the next-to-last set of villas on the hall.

I imagine it isn't quite as much of an issue if you're driving and have a car parked in the parking garage. In that case, it isn't that far to walk because you can drive through the garage and come up an elevator somewhere along the hallway. However, we used DME to get from the airport and have been relying on the Disney buses to do everything. It's a long, long walk. Long enough that it's actually discouraged us to go and do some things.

I was just doing some measuring using Google Earth to compare our walk to the bus stop here with walks at previous resorts. I estimate the walk from the Kidani bus stop to our room is 0.34 miles. (And believe me, it's agonizing watching the room numbers slowly creep up from 7701 to 7776 as you do the long trek.) There's also not a single bench or other place to stop and take a break along that entire distance.

When we stayed at the Treehouse Villas, last year, I measured the path from the THV section of SSR to the Grandstand bus stop. That was only 0.25 miles. When we stayed in the Paddock the year before, I thought that was a long walk to get to Artist's Pallet. Not so by comparison. That was only 0.31 miles. In those two cases, I had the option to take a bus if I wanted to wait for it.

And that long, long, long hallway at the Boardwalk Villa? We had the next-to-last room there, as well, on the Dance Hall side of the Boardwalk. We thought that was a long walk at the time. Looking back, it should have been a breeze at only 0.2 miles from our room to the bus stop.

We're staying in a studio, so no washer and dryer in our room. That hasn't been an issue in the past, but won't be quite as convenient here. Unless someone can point me to another one, it appears the only laundry room is located clear on the other side of the lobby. That's a long way to haul a bag if dirty clothes.

We did the Kidani pool yesterday and the Jambo House pool today. I'm afraid I wasn't overly impressed with either. The theming was nice, but just didn't "grab me." I'm also the type who loves the water, and will stay in the pool for hours at a time. The sun has been so hot here the past few days; I was really looking for a shady spot. There wasn't one to be found in the Kidani pool. At Jambo House, there was a small section of shade thrown by one of the lifeguard umbrellas. It was a very crowded little section of the pool, though. Many had noticed it was the only shady spot. Despite being 45 and having a Winnie the Pooh build, I also love water slides. These two weren't the greatest. At Jambo House, I didn't like that I had to put on shoes and shirt to go inside Mara to fill our refillable mugs. A poolside dispenser would have been nice. To be honest, we forgot to take our mugs with us on our Kidani pool day, and neither one of us was willing to walk back to get them. We therefore didn't pay much attention to where a drink refill station was located.

Our lunch at Sanaa was very good. We ate there on our arrival day. While we really enjoyed what we had, it was pretty much a been-there-done-that kind of place for us. We may re-visit in a few years, but certainly won't go back again in the same trip. It's a shame, because it would certainly be nice to have a place that was convenient to get to that we wouldn't mind repeat visits to.

Add our vote to the group who think Kidani needs a quick service. We were happy with what we got at Mara for 1 breakfast and 1 lunch, but getting there isn't worth the effort for repeated visits.

A big thumbs up to online check-in this trip. When we stepped off the DME bus, a cast member greeted me by name. I guess the front desks are now somehow linked to the DME desk at the airport, and they knew which bus we were on. Our package was waiting for us, and our room was surprising ready at 10:00 am.

No problems in our room. Everything was perfectly clean, and no signs of wear and tear at all.

My roommate is impressed with the fitness center, and likes the fact that it has 24-hour access. He wishes every resort offered that. They have the machines he likes to use. His one complaint is an attention-to-detail item. They apparently have disposable disinfectant wipes that you're supposed to use to wipe off machines when you're done. That dispenser has been empty for the past two days.

Again, for those who love this resort, please don't take any offense. These are just the things we've observed and how AKV has played against our vacationing preferences. We're still having a wonderful time. I have to admit, though, I'm glad we've booked a split stay. We move to Bay Lake Tower on Friday.

No worries...no flames coming. That's the best part of DVC -- there's a resort that fits everyone's "Ideal" and now you know AKV is not for you. We absolutely LOVED our stay at AKV - Kidani in May and are looking forward to returning at the end of August. However, I do understand/appreciate your honesty. We were less than impressed with OKW (we've been DVC members for 10 years and have stayed in every DVC resort on property) it was just not for us (we tried it twice and both times were the pits) so we don't book our stays there. Just our preference. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

None coming from me either. :sad2:

Back in 2006 my DW and I decided not to do a park on our last day and instead visit three resorts that we might be interested in staying at in the future and we didn't like AKL at all. I don't imagine we would ever request a stay at AKV.

So I'm on your side when the flames come. :cool1:

Sometimes I think there is a note on our account that we like to be in the furthest reaches of the universe at hotel resorts because in 10 years we have never been lucky. We are always put in the last 15-20 percent of the rooms wherever we stay even when we request to be close to the lobby.

The only time we have ever had good room assignments was pre-DVC. Even the year we made the mistake of exchanging points for a Poly stay we were in the very last building on the property. It was faster to walk on to the TTC and ride the monorail to get to the lobby than it was to walk it.

We have never stayed at AKV but we have stayed at AKL and I was tired of the themed food after the second day. We enjoy it and we plan to visit AKL for a meal in November but we treat it as a nice place to visit but we wouldn't want to live there.

I think when a DVC members says they really like all of the things to do while staying at BWVs, then it's a sure bet they won't like AKV as they will find it to be boring in comparison.

But like disneychic says that's okay. There are different resorts for different folks.

I hope that your stay at BLT works for you. I know you will have shade at the pool from late morning on. You might have more trouble finding a sunny spot but in this heat I wouldn't care.

Thanks for the mileage information. Which is the very reason I never understand the comments about OKW and SSR being so far away from everything. Simply not true and I would rather be near a bus stop to a park than having a long additional walk to get to the park anyday.

Sometimes you really don't know if you will like something or not until you try it. I would let them know the wipe down dispenser is empty.

No flames from me either. As it turns out, we had that same type of location issue in a 1 bedroom for a couple of nights in March. We had a car though, so it was nice to park right by the elevator that was the shortest walk to our room. The bad thing is that it took forever to get to the lobby and the bus stop was a hike, but not as bad as the lobby. As for the 0.34 miles....That part doesn't bother me, because I have a driveway that's that long. Our room was second from the end on the last "bead" on the end of Kidani that is nearest Jambo. The good thing was that it was almost as easy to walk to Jambo as it was to the Kidani lobby.

On the other hand...I have decided the savanna view IS worth it! I just don't plan to stay there for more than a week at a time every couple of years. Our favorite stays at AKV have been concierge level. That's mostly because of the ease of movement to everything else at the resort.

My .02 cent worth here....though I don't have much to compare it to, I have to say for us, the walk does make a difference (not vacation ruining but something that does bother us). AKV is our home and I do love it there. We stayed at Jambo with a Savannah view two years ago (non DVC) and the walk was just crazy! It bothered others (my DH and the other family we were with) but me..not so much. Of course, I didn't have a sleeping child I was carrying back to the room at the end of the night.

Having said that, when my DH and I went back last year, the SV wasn't a big necessity for us. I chose to walk around the resort and look at the animals since after being in the parks and heat all day, I really wasn't a fan of sitting outside in the heat again to watch them. Anyway, I requested a room close to the elevator and we got it. Let me tell you what a difference it made! And I didn't feel slighted cause the animals weren't outside my door.

I do love the pool at AKV rather thann Jambo house, not sure why, I just do. Having said that, there are other resorts I want to try as well but as far as my comparison of AKV and AKL, I'm pretty happy at AKV.

I guess that's what makes the DVC world go round, every one has their own preferences and thanks for sharing yours! I found your post to be interesting and very observant too! ;)

The best thing about DVC is there is a spot that fits everyone. Could you imagine a restaurant without a menu choice.

OP gave it a try and that is what we want to do at other DVC's, give it a try, select our favorites then return to those locations the most.

Our favorite happens to be AKL but for many reasons why others do not prefer it!

We are anxiuos to try OKW next time, never been there, we prefer all resorts that are not a community format and spread out such as SSR and OKW but with all the great things posted about OKW, we owe it to ourselves to gain an experience there. Different styles, different themes at DVC is one of their best assets I believe.

:thumbsup2 Completely agree!

No Flames from me either! I have yet to stay at Kidani, because so far we have only booked studios or CL at Jambo.

I do agree with you on all your points and that is why we have not stayed at Kidani yet. My AKV strategy is if we book studios or CL, we stay at Jambo House. Jambo has the counter service and easy mug access (not tied to pool bar hours) also easy access to laundry as it is all on the same floor.

If 1 bed or larger we will book Kidani because we have the 2 baths, the separate tub/shower, W/D Full kitchen for snacks and meals and underground parking. We have visited Kidani often on our stays at Jambo and I do think it is very well done and believe we will enjoy a larger unit there when we are ready to book one.

OTOH, I would not book a 1 bed or larger at Jambo because of the revised floorplans. The CL 1 bedroom was a huge disappointment because we booked 10 nights over Christmas and I was not aware of the possibility that we would not receive a tub, just a roll in shower. I really enjoy the tub, and something I was looking forward to in CL.

We love the THV, and did not mind the walks at all.

No flames, to each his own.

We loved AKV, everything about it. We also requested top floor and did not have as far to walk as you did to your room, but when we are in Disney with all the walking we do - that last little walk to our room is not that big of a deal for us.

I love the theme of the resort, and seeing the animals to me makes it an amazing experience, hard to think someone would find that underwhelming.

We also found the Cast Members to be incredible, the best we have encountered at a Disney Resort, and that is saying something since we usually feel we are treated well by the CM's

I agree that there is little shade to be found at the Kidani pool, but our trips are in the fall when the weather is not so brutal, and considering that here in NY we will be looking 5 months of grey skies and winter in the face, I dont mind being in the sun. However, I thought the pool area was pretty nice. There is a drink refill station at the poolside bar at the Kidani pool.

I would like to see a quick service restaurant/food court at Kidani, but we get a one bedroom with a kitchen. So, we stop and pick up groceries for the week and always have something to cook or snack on in the room.

So again - no flames, that is the beauty of DVC, something for everyone

We were at Kidani for five nights early July, I want to say it was room 7762. Very near the end of the building nearest to Jambo.

We started joking as we walked down the endless hallway "are we there yet? Are we there yet?"

Even with the looooong walk to our studio, we loved Kidani and will definately stay there again. I will just request near elevator or lobby next time.

Aside from the walkway, our complaints were mug refill hours. If you got back from a park late, forget about refilling the mug.
No running path. DH tried running along the buildings, but didn't like dodging people walking, CMS in golf carts, etc. He didn't think it wise to run along the roadways.
Size of the pool. It is tiny! Though DD did enjoy the slide and the water play area. We all thought the water play area was nicely done.
No shade at the pool!
Lack of quick service. Loved Sanaa and the lounge though. Have Sanaa booked for our Thanksgiving trip.
The lobby, while really pretty, was kind of underwhelming. We didn't feel that "wow" we feel at Jambo.

Loved, loved, loved the CMs at Kidani. And loved our Savannah view. I don't think I would want to stay standard at Kidani.
Overall we really loved our stay, it just seemed like a lot of little things were not well thought out.

Kidani is our favorite DVC resort at WDW. I'll likely never stay at Jambo again unless its to do the concierge one more time. :goodvibes

I was in a savannah view 1 bedroom in March with DSis and a DF. The DF made lots of remarks about the long walk to the room. However, DSis and I didn't mind it because we got to see lots of anmals on the Pembe savannah while walking. I was happy that we weren't on that savannah because besides the animals, you get to see the road and the fence.

I'm happy with AKV. We one some points there and I can imagine at least one AKV stay every year!

I haven't eaten at Saana yet.

Bobbi:goodvibes

We had a Std. view studio at Kidani in March and we very defnitely decided we prefer Jambo House over Kidani. I had requested "near the bus stop" and so we were in the 2nd bead from the lobby heading toward Jambo and the bus stop was pretty much right outside which was very convenient EXCEPT when we were trying to go to bed and you could hear every bus pulling out. They have a definite SOUND. But I was glad we were close. Anyway, we felt the schlep to the pool was a little awkard and I was actually unimpressed with the pool (I thought it was small). And oddly, I found it hard to find a spot IN the sun at the Kidani pool!! It was March so not hot at all & my winter white body was CRAVING some sun!! Every chair I found was in the shade and I found the pool water to be freezing. (I'm sure NOT the case NOW but in MARCH the water was COLD.)

I didn't like the layout of the studio either. I think they screwed that up by putting the sink in with the tub/shower - kinda ruins the privacy and the 2 people doing things at once thing. I think having the tub / shower in with the toilet works best for us.

We were unimpressed with the Kidani lobby and store and actually went over to Jambo to shop! And I very much missed the Mara. Sanaa was good but we still like Boma best. The only advantage to Kidani IMO was being the first bus stop.

We DO like the theming of AKV and are glad there is still a choice to go to Jambo on our future trips! I hope Kidani gathers more fans so there's still availability at Jambo!!:thumbsup2

The novelty of the savannah view was something else that was worn out after a couple of days. It isn't that pretty and watching animals eat gets boring after awhile. I will take the view at OKW any day.

I don't mean to bash AKL/V but it is the only place at disney that we would never want to stay at again.

We stayed at Kidani this past Jan and loved it. We too were in the second to last bead away from Jambo. Thankfully we had a car, but kept saying that we wouldn't be as happy if we only relied on the buses that trip. It is a long walk, especially if you forget something, or have kids complaining the entire walk. The thing that seemed to help cut down the walk was going down to the garage level, and then cutting thru to the pool sidewalk then on to the bus stop. It probably shaved a couple of minutes off the time to get there, even though it wasn't the most scenic walk having to go thru the garage.

We love Kidani but I agree some of the rooms are out there. It is one of my home resorts and I love the tranquility

"To each his own" is so true. We bought AKV sight unseen 3 years ago, and love it. We stayed at Kidani last year in early Dec. and it was wonderful. We had stayed at Jambo in May of '09 and preferred Kidani. We really liked the quiet atmosphere, the CM's (who were awesome), and the 1 bedroom extra bathroom. Our room was not as far from the lobby as yours though. We also love the pool area at Kidani. I found a wonderful shady spot to sit and read, but again, it was early Dec. We will be happy to stay there every year at least once, but would like to try OKW and BC also. We are going in Nov. of this year and staying at BWV and I have booked dinner at Jiko just to get my "AKV fix". We have a Grand Villa booked for May with all of our kids and grandkids and I can't wait to show them my "home". But, no flames - we all just need to find the place that makes us happy! That is what vacations are for.
