Hey,
I have booked a B-day trip for our son and we are going in Jan.!!!
We already have park tickets so I booked our AAA rate and could only get the standard room at AKL. How is it? We have stayed at AKL before but have only stayed in the Savannah rooms. Are the standard rooms nice and not noisy, etc.?
Thanks!

The standard rooms are identical to the savannah rooms, just without the view.

I have stayed in the Savannah Room and it is gorgeous!

Not messy at all and the theming is awesome!

We have stayed in a std. room (in the giraffe wing) and it was fine. No more noisy than any other room that we've stayed in. The only it was noisy is when you'd have very eager guests getting a little loud while walking down the halls.

The standard rooms are a good size and decorations are beautiful! I think the noise depends on where your room is located. The first standard view room we were assigned to in May was directly over the area where the Magical Express buses, taxis and guests arriving via car pulled up. It was very noisy and smelled from the fumes. We were immediately moved to a room at the end of Kudu Trail. They've tagged some of those rooms as standard view because they overlook the ends of two savannahs and guests were complaining about paying for a savannah view and not really getting what they paid for.

Here's a picture of where our original room was located (the yellow dot is our original room):

Everything to the right of this (Giraffe Trail) overlooks the driveway and bus stop area...if you plan to use your balcony at all, you may want to request a room on Ostrich Trial (overlooking the parking lot) or at the end of Kudu Trail.

In 2005, we arrived at AKL (on our honeymoon) to find out that the standard room we had overlooked the parking lot. Our TA told us prior to that, that resorts don't put honeymooners in rooms like that.....just one of many misdirections and misinformation they gave us. Needless to say, I was extremely irritated with our TA (who tried to turn the blame around on me).

We upgraded to a savannah (oop), but it was worth every penny.

So in answer to your question, we got a first hand look at a standard room vs a deluxe room. The std room was a little bit smaller but not by much. Still nice (just wasn't what I expected with a view). If you like to sit out on your balcony with your morning paper and coffee like I do, then you'll find a standard room balcony to not quite be satisfactory and it is very small. Barely big enough for a table and one chair. If we go back to AKL next October, I will probably book for a savannah room again. I've learned from my TA past mistakes! lol.

Thanks for the info! Yes the Savannah rooms are nice. Those are the only rooms we have stayed in before at AKL. But since we could only get the AAA room rate for Standard rooms we thought we would try it out.:)
But wanted info about them ( the standard rooms) from people like you that have really stayed in one.:)
Thanks again!!

I would be sure to have the reservation noted that you do not want to be near the taxi stand or bus stop. The rooms in that area are noisy, and the ones on the first floor completely lack privacy--you might as well stay at a moderate and save the money, because people will be at eye level with your blacony walking past there day and night.

I have to agree with Ducklite - we felt bad for the people who's "balconies" were on the ground level next to the walkway to the buses. We felt like we were invading their privacy. Also their balconies were covered by the roof of the walkway so even when they were on their balconies, they couldn't have possibly felt like they were really outside.

We hadn't been to AKL before our stay in May and I was shocked that they put guest rooms so close to the driveways, walkway and bus stop. It just didn't feel vacation-like to us because of all of the foot and vehicle traffic being so close to the building.

i'm getting more and more and more and more nervous about having booked a standard room for our honeymoon 1/6-1/13....:confused3
