AKL - standard or savannah

What would you do? If we would book at AAA rate for standard view room DH and I could stay two nights before and three nights after the part of our trip with the whole family at SOG. If we choose savannah view, we can only do it for our first two nights (at which time we will not have admission tickets to the parks, etc) and will then be at CSR the last three. Are standard view rooms ever upgraded for free? Would we enjoy the resort just as much without the savannah view from our own private room?

My main reason for staying at AKL would be to have a Savannah View room. We did a few years back and it was great. However, there are several viewing areas around the resort where you can see the savannahs if you book a standard view room. I would watch the animals come out at sunrise from our balcony and then watch them roam around again in the evening. If you aren't going to be spending much time sitting on your balcony, you might want to book the standard view room and hope for a comp upgrade. AKL does seem to give them out during off peak seasons so you might have a good chance getting one. There aren't that many standard view rooms at the AKL although some of them do have a horrible view of a wall near the bus depot; I wouldn't want one of those.
