AKL Room Upgrades

We are booked through a UK holiday company for 2 weeks at AKL, standard room. They want £600 ($1000) to upgrade to a Savannah room for the 2 weeks...I dont think so!

I would really like a Savannah view room (we have 2 small children who would love to see the animals from the room) so I am hoping to do it at check in. I have heard from several people who have also booked through the same holiday company (Virgin Holidays, the UKs biggest tour operator to Florida) and have automatically been given a Savannah view.

Do you think its best to wait and see what room we are allocated before asking for an upgrade, or to ask straight away? I dont mind paying for it, of course, but wouldnt be adverse to a freebie . Also, it is our wedding anniversary whilst we are there, so it that worth mentioning? Should I bring our Wedding licence (its a US one, we were married in Florida)??

Ive heard that faxing room requests and Anniversary dates will just be thrown away these days because everyone was doing it, is this true, or is it still worth doing?

Any thoughts or comments?

It's going to depend on availability.

It seems that most standard views are upgraded to POOL view, NOT savannah view. One step upgrades are much more common.

If you have your heart set on savannah view, book that or risk disappointment.

We have found that unless staying concierge level, celebrations are not always recognized at WDW. You and 800 other people will have an anniversary that weekend--they simply can't do something for everyone.

Your best bet to try for a savannah view upgrade is to book the pool view.

Faxes are thrown away, don't waste the time or money.

Hi,
When we have booked Hotels through Virgin Holidays we always ask on check in for the costs to upgrade and usually will get a good deal as this will be in US Dollars.
Now we just booke the flydrive with Virgin and the hotels we book ourselves this year using WDW website.

I rarely book through Virgin Holidays, but I got a massive discount on this deal, that it was too good to resist (the accomodation was pratically free ). My final week is a fly drive and have booked our week at the Poly independantly.

Will ask on check in to upgrade I think, the price Virgin want is ridiculous! DH would be happier with a pool view (not a big animal lover) so that would be fine.
