Just wanted to check to see how many people have booked a standard view room only to be upgraded to a Savannah view room when checking in?
Wanted to see if this happens often or do you have to ask when checking in if they have any available upgrades?

Thank you and have a magical day!

It's not as common as it appears to be by reading these boards.....after all, people who get upgraded will come and post about their good fortune, but you don't see "I got exactly what I paid for!!!" threads. :)

If you ask about upgrading to a Savannah view room, they're likely going to assume that you want to pay for the upgrade, and quote you a price - if they even have Savannah view rooms available. Of course, you have the option of turning it down if you don't like the price.

Yes, complimentary upgrades do happen, but they're not common. Probably less so, since a significant number of rooms were converted to DVC villas, and are no longer available for upgrades. If it's important to you to have a Savannah view, you should probably change your reservation now, and avoid disappointment.

I agree with Lynne on this. We had booked standard back in the before dvc days of the AKL. Once we were upgraded to a pool view (late january trip) and the next time we were upgraded to savanna view (early Dec trip 2005). However, this was before they took alot of the rooms out of the inventory and converted them into DVC rooms. They converted many rooms. We actually just stayed in a standard DVC room a few weeks ago with a pool view. I agree that if you want a savanna view you should book it as the opportunity for upgrades has gotten less now at the AKL.

I have twice book a standard room and both times I was upgraded. Once to a pool view and once to a Savannah view. But I was prepared that if that was the room we got, then that was fine. If you really want a Savannah view room, then I would book that.

Have you received upgrades since the DVC openned there July 2007?

we were upgraded in dec. 2007. we booked a standard and would ahve seriously been fine with that, but it never hurts to ask IMO. he was about to show us on the map where our room was loacated and we asked if they had any upgrades, it was our anniversary anda little pixie dust would be fabulous! he said "hold on let me ask my manager" and he came back and aparently got the ok b/c they moved us for free to a savannah room. we were very appreciative but would have been ok with what we had booked

I just got back from a trip (2/14-2/17). I was booked for an AP Std room. At check in I asked to make one request-not to be looking out on the bus station side! The CM said "Oh you won't be looking at busses, you've been upgraded to a savannah view!"
We were assigned Sunset Savannah Rm #4316.This had a perfect view of the giant crane and new building construction of the AKV! I've stayed at AKL four other times. Always concierge, always 5th floor, always Arusha Savannah. In other words, I've been SPOILED! It was funny to get a free upgrade and end up looking at construction and the people pen. Just glad I wasn't paying a full price savannah view.
So free upgrades can happen. I'm guessing there are a lot more guests asking for the better views on the Zebra Trail side, though.

Thanks so far for all the answers to this question. It really does just seem like a luck of the draw as far as upgrades.
As far as our trip goes really IMHO it does not matter where are room ends up being located because the resort is just beautiful and we will enjoy it either way......after all we really do not plan on spending much time in our room as it is becuase we will be out amoung the parks and DTD exploring and getting in as much as we can during our vacation. We will be there from the 2nd of Dec this year to the 8th of Dec and will be celebrating not only our DD B-day but our 4 year anniversary as well so maybe with any luck we will run into some extra magic and pixie dust during our stay.........after all it still will be TYOMD and we might get dreamed or something....or so we hope and wish and dream about!
We also had a Disney Honeymoon but in California at DL so it will be great to spen our anniversary in WDW!

Once again thanks to all who have replied so far.
