AKL - Overreacting? What do I do?

We checked into AKL Jambo house last Friday. Saturday morning, I opened a box of cereal for breakfast. The next day, there were tons of tiny, gnat/ant like bugs in it. It wasn't left opened, but the inner bag was rolled down and the top closed. I was a little grossed out, but hoped it was a one time thing. Tonight, when I come in, my resort mug has the same small bugs all in it! I'm totally grossed out and have found three bugs on me since cleaning the mug out. Of course, these haven't directly got on anyone else in my party and all three of them are like "everywhere has bugs" and "we are surrounded by animals and poop, what do you expect?" And "they'd just stick us in the lobby while they fumigate" and the one that almost made me curse - "we can just tell them we are checking out early because there are bugs and head toward the house." As if I haven't spent the last 9 months planning this vacation.

Sorry to vent, but I don't know what to do. All this coupled with the fact that the carpet was wet when we checked in makes me think there could've been a previous problem. I just want to enjoy my last two days at Disney, but now I'm paranoid and itching thinking about these stupid bugs!

I paid more than I have ever paid for a hotel in my life for this trip. I can't help but think that not having bugs is too much to ask! They are not bedbugs. Don't look like them + no one has any bites. This is the first time we have ever stayed on property and I don't know who or if we should tell anyone. I appreciate any feedback or comments.

Am I overreacting??

Thanks!

Go to the front desk NOW. Tell them what is going on. (do not bother to call. you will not reach the front desk. you will reach a call center that will TELL you they are the front desk. they aren't. walk there.) You need to change rooms. You need new cereal.

If they are teensy tiny little ants, they are likely "sugar ants", and they can be easily taken care of. We had them in our room at Hard Rock Hotel a few years ago, and the maintenance guy came up with some simple spray and a cloth, and they were gone in 10 minutes.

But first you have to tell them! Do NOT let your traveling companions sway you; this is bothering you. But don't flip out either. Be FIRM. Let them come up with the main solution when you go to the front desk and talk to them.

Alas, AKL is very good at compensating. I say "alas" because it means they do it so very often. So let them help you.

It sounds like sugar ants. We had them one time at All Star Sports, they were on the bedside table. A maintenance guy came right away and told us what they were, sprayed the table and they were gone, but Disney still offered to swap our room for us as well.

Yup, sugar ants. Tell the front desk and switch rooms.

The only problem with switching rooms is the OP only has 2 days left and its a PIA to pack up a whole room to be moved. We did this before once when stay at POR and it took us at least a few hours during time we should of been at the pools/parks to pack up.

Am I overreacting??

No, if anything you are under-reacting. If the carpet was significantly wet when I checked in, I would have requested a new room, even if it was just water. If I found a ton of ants/bugs in my cereal, I would have brought the bag of cereal down to the front desk, and again asked for a new room. Yes, it is Florida, and yes, there are bugs everywhere, and every trip to Florida we've seen the occasional stray ant/bug in our room, no big deal. But when there are dozens of ants crawling all over the sink, it's time to go to the front desk and ask for a different room.

Not normal for AKL and you are not overreacting! We had cereal and drinks in our room and had our balcony door open in the mornings while we were getting ready to leave. Never had an issue with bugs so you definitely need to inform the front desk!

Just go to the front desk. Tell them the problem and they will fix it for you. Change rooms, if possible, or if you prefer. At the very least they can get rid of the infestation for you.

If the others aren't bothered by this, that is fine. However, YOU are. So, quietly just take care of it. It's not overreacting to want to have a room free of bugs.

Enjoy the rest of your stay!

When I lived in Florida I had to buy sealable plastic containers for my cereal because after one day there would be small bugs in there no matter how well I rolled the bag closed. It was just a reality of living in Florida. I'm not sure if the resort will be able to stop them but go ahead and ask about it.

I would have gone and asked for a different room the first day if it had a wet carpet. I am not sure why people are afraid to speak up, the hotel employees will help you. Believe me it is easy to know when a guest has a valid complain and when they are trying to play the system. I would go to the front desk and ask if they can move you or spray the room. Do not take the cereal down just take a picture to prevent speeding the ants any further. I hope you get your issue resolve and enjoy your trip.

You got extra protein, it's good for you. Sorry couldn't help myself and I'm only kidding. As others have said, take a picture and go down to the front desk and see what they can do. I don't ever leave open food in my room for just that reason, zip lock bags are my friend. I live in Georgia so I'm used to little critters always invading something, they love dog food and hummingbird feeders. Even being used to it just yuck.

Why not just carry the box of cereal to the front desk? It's really NOT a big deal. I think you are making the issue bigger than it is. As PPers have said, it is likely sugar ants. They are harmless and they can easily spritz for them. As Love to Drive noted--these are endemic in hot, humid climates and you left one of their favorite foods out and open for them. I'm SURE the front desk staff has seen this before and they can easily assign a means of control.

Stayed at Jambo twice. No bugs. Don't blame the animals or poop. Treat it like u would bugs in any disney hotel room.

The two times my carpet was wet (not at AKL) the problem was the fridges were defrosting and the water was getting on the carpet.

I just came back from AKL - my second time there. This time wasn't as nice as last. Always voice your concerns, I did, we changed rooms wouldn't up in a disability room since nothing was left but we didn't mind. I still think I had bed bugs though. I was bit all over but my fiancé wasn't. Still had an amazing time!

They sent someone in to spray yesterday while we were at the parks. Haven't seen any more bugs. Overall, AKL was an ok stay. I think I'd choose a more central resort next time, though. The busses take forever!

Also, for less per night, my parents had a condo offsite that was way nicer. Will probably consider staying offsite next time, especially if it isn't free dining plan season. We barely used our mugs since the only refill places were far from our room and we didn't get to the pool at all, so we didn't use that bar either.

Thanks for all the responses DISers!

At the very least consider staying not at akl. It's our least fave and we've given both Jambo and Kidani a try now.
