I’m planning a five Night this trip in March with just DD3. My home is AKL. The goal is a relaxing fun vacation for just the two of us. I’m thinking maybe three park days and the a couple of resort days.

AKL - my gut says a standard room is fine. I want a savanna view, but aren’t there other places to view the animals? I want to save points and I feel like a view would be a waste. She is three, and We aren’t likely to just sit in the room.

Other resorts that would be good for her age? I thought BLT, but only because it’s close to MK, and Poly. But I’m leaning towards keeping AKL.

(planning gives me happy vibes. I might cancel this trip but right now I really want to go with her.)

AKL would be a lot of fun, especially if she likes animals. Although a MK resort could be magical and convenient, too. I had a trip planned with my DD4 in May that I was so bummed to miss. But characters were to be a big part, so I haven’t decided to rebook yet. But I stalk Disney pages hoping for positive news! Hope the two of you go and have a great time!

AKL is the best resort to relax (besides Fort Wilderness). I do think a savanna view is important for a resort-heavy trip there. But of course, you can see animals elsewhere.

Personally consider savanna view as a necessity, even though there are places to go in the building to see animals. Nevertheless, be aware that at Jambo a little more than 50% of the standard view rooms actually have savanna view (rooms are just considered as not having as good a view as other savanna view rooms, but most are decent views). A non-guaranteed request to make if you want to try for one of the standards at Jambo that has savanna view is to ask for a room on the Kudo Trail side of the building, on which side all standards have savanna view. Do not request a standard that has a savanna view because the phone MS always say there are not any.

I would consider BLT a good alternative except I consider the studios to be too small. Poly is also a good choice. However, if you are trying to save points, neither works. Poly studios are expensive, and getting a standard view studio at BLT at 7 months out is usually near impossible, so you would need to reserve lake view.

My three year old niece loved Animal Kingdom Lodge! She just turned 5 and she STILL talks about it. My sister booked a standard room with no specific room request, and was given a savannah view room for no apparent reason. But I do love to go on the Touring Plans site, look at the different views from each room and then make my requests. I have been successful every time even (though I know it's not guaranteed).

She also loved the playground and pool there, and of course the animal lookout points around the lodge. I really don't think you can go wrong even with a standard view!

I don’t want to use points on the savanna view because she’s going to want to go out the room! So I’m thinking try to do the standard with partial savanna room trick.

I also think I’m going to stick with AKL. It’s the best fit for this kind of trip. There has been SO much chaos, and I’m really looking forward to waking her up at 3 am, putting her in the car, and telling her she and Mommy are going on a vacation. I spend so much time “adulting” I miss just spending time with her, and this really sounds like an awesome way to use my DVC!

savannah view unnecessary IMHO--I've stayed in both and now only get standard rooms. There is a great community hall over at Kidani with coloring, disney movies playing, crafts. You have to stay with her, but it's usually somewhat deserted during the day. Very nice cast members staffing it, of course. There's a huge savannah view balcony. I got coffee on the way there and sat with my kids for an hour or two while they colored on nonpark days. DD liked it better than DCL kids club. There is also a nice room off of the Jambo lobby with inside space the relax as well as outside balcony with rocking chairs.
AKV also has the spray play area over at Kidani with loungers right there, perfect for a 3 yr old when Mom doesn't feel like getting in the pool. And a small kids play/jungle gym by Jambo pool with views of flamingos.
There are many animal/cultural enrichment activities and they have evening movies every night (assuming nothing changes due to Covid). Many geared for younger--"parade" around the lobby, story telling, coloring sheets, etc.

Jambo or Kidani for this type of trip? I like the coloring and things like that. It’s set for early March so possible to swim.

I want to do resort things with her. I don’t want to go to the park every day. Is one better than the other for resort things to do?

I like J for ease of getting to the Mara. But, the spray ground and community hall are over at K. So, I'd maybe take K. All J standard views are pool or possibly "not great" savannah views vs. over front drive at K. The K view wouldn't be a big deal to me, it's still not a bad view, but the standards at J are quite nice. There's a van that goes between the resorts and you can jump on any bus to get from K to J if you don't want the van.

As to activities, I can only speak to the past, when both buildings had many, comparable activities for the kids, with neither being better than the other. What it will be like under the coronavirus rules if some or all are still in effect when you go is an unknown. As to past activities, you can find activity calendars online, e.g., for one from December 2019, go here http://www.orlandoparksnews.com/2019/11/walt-disney-world-resort-recreation.html.

As to choosing Jambo or Kidani, if you want to try for a standard room that has savanna view, chances are much higher at Jambo. Kidani also has some standard rooms that have savanna view, but only on the Pembe savanna (the one without giraffes or zebras), and the rooms are mostly far from the lobby on the north wing (the front lobby entrance faces west). To possibly get a savanna view with a standard view room at Kidani, the request to make is for a room near the Pumba elevator. Most of the standards face front road, back of the bus station, front entry area, and the pool (although it is in the distance and for lower floor rooms main view is of a hill, grass and trees). Best requests for location of a standard view that does not have savanna view is for a room near the Rafiki elevator (for shortest possible trip to the pool) or near the Timon elevator (for short trip to bus station) and both are within striking distance of the lobby.

A major difference between the two buildings is length of the building. Jambo, end to end is very long, longer than any other single resort building at WDW ...EXCEPT FOR KIDANI. The Kidani building is actually one of the longest single hotel buildings in the world, more than a 2/3 mile walk from one end to the other. If you get rooms near the end of one of the two wings, expect very long walks to lobby, pool, buses, and other amenities. If you have a car, Kidani has the advantage of an under-building, first floor, parking lot that runs almost throughout the entire building, and with three elavators along each of the two wings, you can usually park fairly close to your room no matter where the room is -- in fact, some actually bring cars so they can use them to drive to the lobby when they need something if they get rooms near the end of a wing.. The large Jambo parking lot is located across the roadway that goes by the front of the building and how close you can park to your room, near to very far, simply depends on where your room is and where you can find a space to park.

Jambo's major advantages are that it has the the much larger lobby and store, three restaurants (Jiko,a table-service, Boma, a buffet, and Mara, quick service with lots of seating, including outside, and all three are good), the larger pool with more places to find shade due to more and larger trees. Kidani's major advantages are that the 1BRs and 2BRs are larger than Jambo's (close to 100 sg ft larger), have an additional bathroom that serves those staying in the living room, has a separate shower and bath in the master bathroom (while Jambo has a single bath with shower and the bath has a very. high step-over to get into it), the master bath is accessible only from the bedroom (at Jambo the master bath is across a hallway from the bedroom and those in the living can see you if you make the crossing), and you can get a dedicated 2BR at Kidani with the extra bed in the second bedroom and a long single balcony rather the divided-by-a-wall balcony for the studio and 2BR in a lock-off. Kidani has one table service restaurant, Sanaa, which is very good. The Kidani pool, though smaller than Jambo and with less shade, has the much longer slide, and has an excellent kids water-play area for kids from 2 to young teens. The bar areas are comparable, although Kidani has more tables in the shade under an overhanging roof. The walk from front entrance to front entrance is about 1/2mile, much longer from the end of the north wing of Kidani and much shorter from end of the south wing. Assuming coronavirus rules do not eliminate it, there is a bus that runs continuously throughout the day and evening between the two buildings.

As to which building, we consider the choice to be easy: If getting a 1BR or 2BR, we choose Kidani for the much better rooms. If studio, the room sizes are about the same and we prefer Jambo in a studio for the benefit of the larger lobby and store and three restaurants. Also note that the Jambo studio has the bath with shower in the separate room for the toilet, while Kidani has the shower next to the sink area and others can potentially see those in the shower while they walk by the open area where the sink is.

This is fabulous! I didn’t realize they had activities like Vero or HH. We could totally do a lot of these, and a relaxing pace would make a fabulous vacation.

Thanks so much for the help. I have always had 5 day, park heavy trips to Disney but am just starting as DVC. I want to find a slower pace.

Imho akv has the best community hall and activities. We also like the one at okw.
