We just returned from our trip and we had a great time. We stayed at AKL and had a great room (4268) overlooking the Sunset Savanna. I was a little worried about staying here because we've done concierge on the monorail last 2 trips. ( I stayed recently one night at POFQ on a business trip). My DH really wanted to try AKL and I found a great price ($200 night, savanna view on Expedia) so we decided to give it a try. Our son is 7 now, so we figured the monorail wasn't as important now that he is older. Great trip. Check in was easy. We saw a large variety of animals from our balcony.
In fact, there wasn't a time that we didn't see animals from our balcony. The ostriches slept outside of our room almost every night. The lobby is spectacular!
CM's were very nice and helpful! We even enjoyed talking to some of the animal keepers while they were outside of our balcony taking care of some animals. Boma's was fun and the food was good. The bus service was pretty good for the most part. There was a lot to do at the resort and we didn't have time to take advantage of everything. The night vision experience was fun. The pool was fine ( I still like Poly's pool and POFQ better). Mousekeeping was fine- had 1 day where it wasn't as good as I would have liked. We did tip every day.
Only downsides were-- Long lines for hot food items at Mara. They were doing some repair work at the pool so some areas were closed off- not a big deal. The bus service was really bad one night from MK (45 min. wait) - but I heard later that they had a bus break down so that was probably what happened. We did have someone below us smoke on their balcony (not allowed) and flick their butts onto the ground. We called down to the front desk when we noticed that one of the hornbills (bird) was trying to eat the butt (If they ate it, they could get really sick or even die according to the keepers). The keepers came out and cleaned them up. They must have said something to those who were staying below us because I didn't smell the smoke or see anymore butts for the rest of the trip.
Overall- I would stay here again. It was restful. For the most part, it was quiet. And I really enjoyed spending time on the balcony watching the animals.
