We have a daughter(18) who has Usher's syndrome. It is a deaf/blindness. We were considering AKL as our next family vacation with her. As part of our planning we were able to visit AKL and take in BOMA . We were impressed with the size and general themeing of the resort. We are concerned with the low light levels at night. She would not be able to navigate the pool area, stairways to the resturants and food court, and some interior hallways safely, independently after dark. One of the things that I was always happy to see was the wonderful lighting that WDW has after dark. AKL was VERY dark. I have seen other discussions re the lighting in the rooms too dark to apply makeup. I am sure that WDW was thinking about the theme and did not take in to consideration the level of lights are not safe. I hope this changes. Just a heads up on this.

Thanks for the heads up. DH and I visited AKL on a trip in July (didn't stay there though). I did notice it seemed darker. I don't know if it has to do with the theme or the fact that they have animals just outside the windows. They might keep the light level low for the animals and also so that people's eyes stay adjusted to the dark so they can see the animals. That does make it hard for anyone with visual disabilities or even for elderly people (in general, we need more light to see claerly as we age).

Oh, thanks you for the heads up! I do have low night vision, that is good to know.

Teri,
I have low night vision also and did not have any problems. I can see why a person with Ushers would have a problem though. They have lttle to no usable sight. At our deaf conference this summer I was trained how to guide a person with Ushers and how to communicate with them. They are amazing people. There were several at the conference and we had guides and interpreters for them for all events.
