We are spending 4 nights at the AKL in a Deluxe Savannah View room next month. I have a few questions and appreciate any help

1. What area should we request? Is any one savannah better than another? ( we have two children in our party with us, a 2 and an 8 yr old)

2. Should we ask to avoid a particular area? I've been reading about people getting stuck with a view of the people pen, should I specify that I don't want to be anywhere near this?

3. When I fax our request in, who do I fax it to?

4. Since we will be on the 5th floor, I am worried about the balcony with our youngest DD who will be 2. Obviously I would never allow her to be out on the balcony without DH or I, but I'm still concerned about safety. Are the slats close together or should I bring netting that I use for our balcony railing at home?

Thanks in advance for all your advice :-)

Teresa

On the savannah , we prefer the Arusha, but all have their plus and minus points and unique animals. On two stays we had different views and were happy with both of them. The people pen is the Sunset Savannah and looks to be less of a "real" savannah, a lotof people do not like this, but itis the only one with male giraffes (bigger) and ostriches.

Onthe room, I would highly recommend a bunk bed room, it should work out great, no fighting over who is on who side of the bed. my 2 yr old loved his own bed this past trip.

No fear on safety, the balcony is well designed, we had no problems with our little guy on either trip.

I do not have the number handy, but onWWW.WDWIG.COm, they have the number - do the fax 4 days before you arrival.

I am sure you will love the resort, it is our favorite by far.

I want to go back to the AKL....

I was on Kudo trail, 3rd f;oor and the view was great. as far as the slats on the balconeys they seemed ok but I dont have little kids and if I did I would make sure the door was looked when I wasn't on the deck so they could come out with me. You'll love the Savannah view, the 3rd floor was perfect, I have heard the highter you go you see the tops of the trees so think about that. have a FUNtastic trip.:bounce: :bounce:

Hi! After the Deluxe Savannah stay at AKL, this became one of my two favorite resorts.

There are so many places to see the animals from within the resort. Don't worry too much! There is no way to predict where the animals will go at which times of day, so you may not be in your room when the animals will be in front of your balcony. That being said, we saw animals every day from our balcony. Not all day, though.

I can't remember the name of the trail that we were on, but I will describe it to you. As you are looking out on the savannah, we were on the right side pretty far down. I will try to locate it on a map and then edit my post to show where we were. Our view was excellent. We saw a lot of giraffes, my favorite. They had to walk past our balcony to get back to their barns for daily cleaning/feeding/sleeping/check-ups.

Some of the balcony views had a lot of beautiful bird views. I would love that, too, but since my favorite animal there was the giraffe, I was glad to be where we were.

You do NOT have to worry about the people pen view. It is only really visible from the first floor rooms unless you look down. That really isn't that big of a deal, although I read one post that went burserk about it. It isn't thirty feet high and one hundred feet wide. It is a tiny authentically fenced area that would be used in case of a fire so that the people exiting in emergency would have a place to go. It is only about six to eight feet high, it seemed from my balcony. It is only about twenty five to thirty feet around, and is made of what appear to be branches found on a savannah. It is interesting, and it is, more importantly, necessary for the safety of all guests.

As the deluxe rooms are only located on the fifth floor, you will not be looking at this pen. You would have to look down to see it. Your eyes will go out ahead of you to see the animals.

There are posts here about fax numbers for each resort. I would do a search to find it. It might be on the AKL frequently asked questions post. You would send it three to four days ahead of your arrival, and address it to the room assigner.

I was there with DD who was three at the time, and found the balcony to be among the safest. It seemed that the bars were really close together. Of course, a child could climb on the furniture and fall off if it was close enough to the rail, but if you are going to be out there with the child each time, don't worry. You may want to block the door with a room chair or the table and chairs inside the room while you are in the shower or at night if you are very concerned. Have a good time.

We were in Deluxe Savannah View room 5595 ( I think) which is a smoking room and at the very end of the hall way. Think of the resort in a U shape with some wings comming out of the sides of the U. We were in the very tip of the end of the U. This room was on of the few that has a larger balcony set inder the thatched roof and that was incredible. All four of us could sit ( after pulling a couple chairs out of the room) on the balconey. The Savannah in front of our room was sort of a transitional savannah between one of the side savannahs and the center Arusha Savannah. Because of this position we didn't have an expansive view in front of us. The Savannah squeezed down here between the building and the fence but this made it so all the animals passed by fairly close including one time when the Gemsbock and Wildebeast were galloping ( quite fast) back and forth like out of one of the African animal shows on TV. To the righ we could see a bit into the side Savannah and to the left we could see across the ens of Arusha Savannah over to the other theatched roof end units on the other end of the U. I thought this location was incredible. It was quiet back there with virtually no foot traffic in the hall. The only con about it was that it was a bit of a walk for the elderly parents but they were still happy with the location and room.
I am not around many children so don't know for sure but the bars seemed pretty close togethar to me. I would bring the netting just in case. It will help you relaxe!!! :)

Daannzz,

What was the bed situation in your room? Would like to request that room my next trip, but really wanted bunk beds and was curious if your had any or if anyone else knows of a great deluxe room to request with bunks.

James,
I think all the Deluxe rooms have the bunk beds.

Teresa, please view this photo closely as it shows the extra lock on the balcony door which should hopefully keep your child safely inside your resort room: link to photo. You can also see the balcony railings, etc.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help and suggestions.

I really appreciate all of the responses. Everyone on this board is always so helpful!

Janet - thank you for the picture of the balcony It was great to be able to see a picture of the lock and the railing.

Yes we had a Queen bed, bunk beds and a day bed. There were only us four adults but it was important that we all have our own beds so that we were well rested and ready for the next day. It worked out great. I am 6'2" and 230 lbs and slept on the top bunk!!! Because the resort wasn't open when I booked and only open a couple weeks when we arrived no one was sure of the bed configuarations in the deluxe rooms so I requested what ever they had that would sleep 5 people or 4 seperated beds. They were very kind. That was my second favorite room in all of my WDW trips.
