So it is time for me to start or TR - so sad we're home but blessed to have had such a memorable time, and right before Christmas :santa:

Let's get you all updated to who we are...

I have been lurking on the board for a couple of weeks while waiting for our wish trip to be confirmed. I'm now a "member" and I hope I do this right!

The Who: My name is Rhonda. I am the mommy to dd Manya, 8, ds and wish kid AJ (Anthony) who is 6, and ds Jasiu, who is 5 (my boys are 11 months and 3 weeks apart - Happy Valentine's Day!!!). Wife to dh Brad, who is the glue that keeps it all from falling apart sometimes :) .

The Why: We moved to California from Buffalo right after marrying, but once we decided to start a family, we moved back "East" to Pittsburgh, PA, where most of dh's family lives. Got pregnant pretty much right away, but my water broke at 17.5 weeks, and I had a stillborn son 8 weeks later. After discovering that I had a genetic abnormality with my uterus, the option was surgery or try again...so we got pregnant 6 months after and I miscarried at 12 weeks. We decided to try one more time, and got pregnant a short 3 months later - and nine months later...right on time...my beautiful daughter Manya was born, a healthy 7 lbs. 14 oz.

A year and a half later we tried again, and I got pregnant quickly with a son! All was well - they followed my pregnancy very closely to be safe, and he was born (again, right on time - November 1) a healthy 8 lbs on the nose! He passed his apgars, but when they did his blood gasses, they were all screwed up. And his cry was really soft, but the nurse reassured me that all babies have their own cry. The Pediatrician even told me that worst case scenario he would have a hole in his heart that sounded scarier than it was. So I sent DH home before the Ped. Cardiologist came in with the results of the echo. And that is when our lives changed forever.

AJ was born with a hole in both the upper and lower chambers of the heart and a mitral valve that was floppy and barely attached to anything. He was in congestive heart failure and needed surgery, but it was deemed "too risky" at his current weight, so it would be scheduled when he hit 10 lbs. That was only 2 lbs of weight gain, so we figured we could do it.

5 weeks later, on December 5, AJ began vomiting and retracting, and he turned white, so we life-flighted to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. AJ weighed 6 lbs. 12 ounces at this point, and they tried to get his weight up, but on December 21 at 6 lbs. 8 oz. they operated. After surgery the CT surgeon came out and said "we fixed his ASD and the valve!"

I'm rambling so I'll try to tighten this story up...AJ returned to heart failure 2 days after we were released from the hospital, and at 16 weeks they were forced to put a titanium valve in place of his damaged mitral valve. Thinking all was well, we celebrated! Again, less than a week after being released from the hospital, AJ was back in heart failure. They tried lots of different medicines trying to control the failure, but his heart was not functioning properly, no matter what they did. Every 5 or 6 weeks we were back in an ambulance being rushed to Children's, where he would do great on IV meds and slowly fail on the take-home stuff. I also gave birth to another son, Jasiu, on October 25 - a week before AJ's first birthday. And he had a hole in his heart, but it is closing on its own, Thank God.

So a week before AJ's 2nd birthday, we were told he would have to be put on the transplant list because it was only a matter of time before AJ's heart, which was trying so hard to compensate for the damage, would give out completely. In order to put AJ on the list, they would confirm the diagnosis via Heart Catheterization. That was scheduled for Monday, October 25, 2007 (my other baby, Jasiu’s first birthday).

Here is when AJ’s story finally begins to turn around…they did the cath and said his heart looked better than they expected! That was the good news…the bad news is they didn’t know exactly what to do to help his heart recovery by itself…

We tried a new medicine combination…Carvedilol, Enalapril (new), Lasix, Digoxin, and of course Coumadin, and AJ’s heart failure number was in the 100s for the first time! Not completely out of failure, but much better.
In June of 2008 (6 months later) AJ’s Ped Cardiologist called me with some news…a doctor in LA had pioneered the use of a pacemaker for something called RST – re-synchronization therapy, and he thought it may teach AJ’s heart how to function better. Would I allow him to send this doctor AJ’s full medical history? (Um, of course!!)

Sorry – I said I’d tighten up :(

So two weeks before AJ’s third birthday, AJ was implanted with a pacemaker – a big honking thing in his stomach area that makes him look like he swallowed a hockey puck. A week after surgery we got his test results back – and that is the last time AJ has been in heart failure. That was 3 years ago!!! However, this next summer AJ will need that valve replaced – he’s outgrown it considering he now weighs 50 pounds!

Where Make Wish comes in: AJ was referred to MAW way back when he was almost on the transplant list. We have always wanted to wait until AJ was older and could remember everything, and we were hoping to wait until he was around 8. But in September his pacemaker started acting funny, and they say one of his leads is deteriorating. Then in October we had a little issue with his increased volume of liquid meds making him vomit. So right before Thanksgiving we decided to plan on making AJ’s wish come true since he is so relatively healthy right now. We called MAW, and they came and made our whole family feel so special – and AJ asked to go this Christmas but it was just too close and they didn’t think it would happen! We gave them some dates for the spring to go to GKTW…then on Monday of last week MAW called us and asked if we would consider going 12/10 – 12/16 of THIS YEAR!!! After dh and I looked at the calendar, we just could not say no…God had opened this door for us RIGHT NOW and we had to walk through on faith.
So we are leaving a week from today, and that’s why I’m here. MAW is being very secretive about our trip – I know it’s to make it special but I’m so nervous about what we should be planning ourselves before we go and what things they might have planned for us – none of us has ever been to Disney!

Any help would be appreciated :goodvibes Thanks for listening – it felt good to get it all out now that AJ is doing well – telling that story used to be a heart-breaker for me.

Day 1 -

We start the day with 5 Olshanskis who did not sleep AT ALL! Lots of tossing and turning and dreaming of Florida sunshine.

Have some breakfast and hop in the car for a 2 hour drive to Pittsburgh airport, fretting all the way that we forgot something or that our bags were overweight.

Get to The Parking Spot (cute name, right?) and park and meet our wonderful MAW chaperone. We get to the airport at 10:30 and meet my twin sister there (she surprised the kids - they didn't know)

Brian was so wonderful that he actually got her an assistance pass so she could see us off at the gate!!

Erika w/Manya and AJ - Jasiu couldn't sit still!!

And one last airport shot of AJ and Brian

Great start! It's great to hear that AJ is doing better. Last spring I worked at WDW and volunteered at GKTW and LOVED it, such a neat place :goodvibes Can't wait to hear about your trip!

So as we are getting ready to pre-board, Brian goes up and talks to the agent (he was so amazing...made sure we got through security and everything with not even an enhanced pat-down :))

As we get on the plane, the pilot asks who AJ is, and that he needs some help getting the plane "ready to fly". AJ's whole face lit up...

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

AJ asked that the pilot be in the picture too...
ry%3D400

And then he asked AJ to turn on the engines so we could take off...AJ got a real scared look on his face, turned around and jumped out of the seat!! Everyone laughed, and then the pilot asked Manya and Jasiu if they wanted to sit down. Well after Jasiu saw AJ jump out of the seat, he wanted NOTHING to do with it, but I got Manya and AJ to sit for a pic

ry%3D400

The kids loved the flight! We got Manya Bublicious gum, and the boys got Bazooka, and they got wings and coloring books (love you Southwest), peanuts and a bag of cinnamon rolls and sprite. They were in heaven! And very well behaved. :thumbsup2

Thanks for visiting! I'm going to try to do a few posts each day until I am done...but I have 800+ pictures and I like to talk, so...:rolleyes1

Oooh...I almost forgot. We get to the gate at the airport, and this man walks up and says "Which one of you is AJ?" :cool1:

It's a family from our town of DuBois! They had heard AJ on the radio the day before talking about his wish trip, and when he saw our shirts figured it was us!

AJ just loved being recognized...he has no idea what's in store for him over the next week, but I can already tell he's going to enjoy every minute (and I wasn't wrong, either!) :dance3:

As we get down the escalator, we see a sign that says "AJ OLSHANSKI" and "GIVE KIDS THE WORLD"...such a nice man who helped us get our bags, then our car, and made sure we knew how to get to the Village. I didn't get a picture or his name...so much sleep deprivation!

As soon as we got to GKTW, they gave AJ a large stuffed Mickey, and Manya and Jasiu got Shamus. We quickly snapped a shot of our Villa (obviously too quickly - good old sleep deprivation kicking in again) and then changed into shorts!

ry%3D400

The first thing my kids noticed was Old Elmer...

ry%3D400

Little did I know it, but every single time we passed that snoring tree for the ENTIRE trip, my 5 year old would yell "Wake Up Elmer" and then turn to one of us and say "he used to be more fun but now he's tired."

We passed that tree probably 6 times a day for 6 straight days, and he replayed that scene EVERY TIME!

LOVE the start to your TR!!! Your family is gorgeous and your story is too familiar.:hug:

Thank you for all of your wonderful messages on our TR, I look forward to getting to know you better.

So we begin Day 2 - and evidently I posted some pics already of Day 2 as you will see from our clothing selection

We wake up and eat at the Gingerbread House - their waffles will quickly become my childrens' go-to breakfast - and as my hubby was instructed to do at orientation, we head to SeaWorld first!

ry%3D400

We want to feed the dolphins first, but we got there before the show started, so we walked over to the Sting Rays..what an unexpected treat!!

ry%3D400

It started out with the sting rays scattered all throughout the pool, but then someone at the feeding station saw AJ's button and asked if we wanted to feed the sting rays some shrimp - they hadn't even been fed yet!

I put one shrimp in the water, and then...

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

I thought it was the coolest thing ever! they are really soft and surprisingly gentle. You put the shrimp sticking up in between your fingers, and put your hand into the water...the sting rays swim over top and eat the shrimp!

ry%3D400

Needless to say, no one else thought it was cool...in fact they all kinda freaked when the sting rays bum rushed my hand once they realized we had food, and I wound up feeding pretty much by myself.

Soon it was time for the dolphin show, and much to my surprise the dolphin trainer led us and three other GKTW families right up to the dolphin pool! It was beyond our wildest dreams to be PETTING DOLPHINS!!!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

See this dolphin up against the wall with his mouth?

ry%3D400

Evidently he does that alot...

ry%3D400

After the dolphin show we started walking through SeaWorld and saw some really awesome animals

ry%3D400

But then they started walking the flamingos around...check it out!

ry%3D400

I tried to get a pic of the kids walking next to them, but one touched AJ...

ry%3D400

And he completely freaked out! That's me trying to console him as he's screaming "I HATE BIRDS! THEY ARE DISGUSTING AND GROSS AND I HATE THEM AND DON'T WANT THEM TOUCHING ME!"

I admit I was laughing pretty hard...I had no idea he felt that way! He explained after that he thinks little birds are cute, but I think the fact that it was the same size as him sent him over the edge.

We decided to check out the aquarium part

ry%3D400

Dolphin show is about to start...we are going to try to fit in dolphin show, pirate/otter/sea lion show and Shamu, then go to Universal for the rest of the day.

Dolphin Show:

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

As we were leaving, two of the "cast" members asked if they could take a picture with AJ:

ry%3D400

We run over to the pirate show (it's the only one AJ's excited about here):

ry%3D400

And then it's Shamu time!!!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

By now AJ is complaining that he wants to go to Universal (it's where Shrek "lives") and doesn't care about Shamu. So we only stayed for about 10 minutes...but as we were trying to leave the park, two of Santa's "real" elves stop us and demand they show AJ the "secret handshake" so whenever they see a real elf they will know we are friendly.

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

As we are leaving SeaWorld, there is a large tree at the entrance, and Shamu is there! He is done taking pictures though, because he has to be somewhere, but as soon as he sees AJ's button, they stop and offer to take pics...

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

By the time we leave SeaWorld, dh and I are somewhat overwhelmed by all the attention that strangers are paying to our children, and pretty sure that SeaWorld is the very best place on earth. And then we get to Universal...

Obviously the first thing AJ wants to do is see Shrek 4-D, so we run right over there, and we walk up just as they are letting the last people in. Rather than squeeze us in, the cast member asks if we want to meet Shrek and Donkey. Um...YES!!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

They spent almost the entire time up until the next show showering everyone with attention. Manya kept commenting on how funny Donkey was...he sounded just like Eddie Murphy!

At Universal we got our first real glimpse into the magic of "the button". Every where we went, as soon as we got into line for a picture and autograph someone pulled us up to the front, and the characters really spent time with the kids!

Our one big disappointment is that as we are going to meet Spiderman, someone pulls my dh aside and asks if the kids want to meet all the Marvel Superheroes. That's what my youngest son Jasiu has been waiting for! He loves all the superheroes, and so we go in a courtyard to wait. Not 3 minutes later it starts to pour! She comes out to us and tells us the sad news...no meet and greet, but they will of course sign our books. :sad1:

At least we got an inside pic of Spiderman, despite the rude mom who literally pulled her crying son out of line, saying "forget it then, let's go" when we were escorted to the front of the line. :guilty:

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

As the other kids are trying to figure it out, AJ's got his web-thing all set!

We left Universal shortly after, and decided to go to sleep so we could get up early to meet Mickey and Minnie and go to DISNEY!!!

Sounds like a great start to your trip !! I hope Jayden will overcome some of his shyness and will want to meet the characters.
Sea World seems like SO much fun ... I LOVE dolphins and all sea creatures .. but Jayden said he had no interest .. but I'll see if i can convince him to go over for just a little while.

Thanks for sharing your pics with us and I cant wait to see more ! :thumbsup2

I would totally start slow with the characters, and remember that some of them are "in character", so maybe Eyeore and Curious George, or even Disney Junior. My youngest was a bit intimidated by some of the "bad guys" at Universal and even some at Disney that he didn't immediately recognize. I bet you could even tell the "helper" that your son is a bit shy so none of the characters are too aggressive with their hugging :)

I highly recommend SeaWorld but you certainly don't have to spend a whole day there.

Day 3 - MAGIC KINGDOM!!!

This is the day we have all been waiting for! First off, Mickey and Minnie are coming to GKTW, and AJ is going to ask them to sign his stuffed Mickey! Also, we are wearing the shirts RustManFan made for us that say "Olshanski Family Wish Trip 2011" with the MVMCP scene on them. Finally - we are going to the CASTLE!!! And as much fun as we had at SeaWorld and Universal Studios, this trip is, and has always been (for AJ at least) about Walt Disney World!

Here's our morning... (even before our waffles!)

Manya practically tackles Minnie

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

Then it's Mickey's turn

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

Minnie signing one foot...

ry%3D400

And the money shot

ry%3D400

I swear my kids were so happy I thought they'd crack open and stuffing would fly out! They did not want to leave the stage...

ry%3D400

As we walk out of the theater (where Mickey and Minnie were) who do we see? PLUTO!!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

Around the corner and there's GOOFY!!

ry%3D400

It has already been the best day of my children's lives and we haven't even left the village for WDW :rotfl: :dance3: :yay:
