Aitran Luggage & Seats?

This is my first time flying Airtran and have a couple of questions. I did not purchase seats at time of booking tickets in December and noticed today that there are still the lowest priced fares available for the same flights. Should I just keep an eye of the fares as it gets closer to March flights and then book seats if I see the lower priced fares disappearing? Has anyone just waited to the 24hr mark and then booked seats? We are a family of 5 and 2 of the kids are teenagers so if we don't all sit together no big deal. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and pay the $60.00 return extra?
How do I pay or a checked bag if I did not do it at time of reservation? I can't seem to be able to do that now. Do I have to wait until the 24hrs prior to flight?

When you check in for your flight at the 24 hr mark, it will ask you number of bags, then you will have opportunity to pay.

I always purchase my seats, but have friend that never does and they always manage to sit together. (2 people)

I'd check in right at the 24-hour mark and save the $$$ for treats at Disney! My family of 4 has never had a problem getting seats together by doing this.
